I'm considering a brazilian rainbow boa, a jungle carpet python, and an irian jaya carpet python. Can anyone tell me about the brb's temperment? And from experience, what is a common max. growth? Thanks so much all... cheers,
MIKE

Hey Mike, i've never had my own but from what i have read they tend to be a bit nippy as a hatchlings. With time spent i understand that they become very tame. And size, i belive they can reach a good 7'. But like i said i've never had my own, so hopfully somebody with more experience can reply better than i.
Colin.
ps. You will have better luck in the Epicrates forum.

Brazilian can be a little nippy as babies, but they will quickly grow without it.. they make great snakes and can grow up to 6-7 feet long..
I have a couple of adult.. absolutely tame and fun to handle ;)

I got a pair in Nov. from Don P. The male calmed down almost right away but the female is still a little nippy. In the biggining though I had to use a hook. I have to tell you though that they are one of my favorite all time snakes.
Cheers,

BRBs are nippy when young, but calm down as they mature. I think they max out at 6-7', the brb at with me right now is about 2 years old and is around 4'+.

Hope this helps.

As everyoje has mentioned, babies are born striking at virtually any movement but soon calm down. I find BRB's to be the easiest species of snake to calm down. Though more active than most boas, there is no reason that adults shouldn't be perfectly handleable. They are a quick-growing species that matures at around 5-7 feet in length, but being a relatively slender snake, this is nowhere near as massive as say a common boa. They make wonderful captives, and are extremely hardy as long as they aren't kept too warm, and there humidity requirements are met. Hope this helped :)

I've only been keeping BRBs for a short while, but I've learned that you just need to be a bit more careful with them and you can really reduce the striking. I've kept them for just about a half a year now and of the 6 youngsters I keep I've only been struck once. Nearly missed one other time. It isn't hard to predict when they are concerned enough to strike. When this happens just try to put off what you're doing to another time.

If you're holding one it will hold on to you WAY harder than it usually does if it is nervous and about to strike. Also it will look like it is going to strike, and you will see them very jumpy. It takes a little while to see the difference between this and there usual playful selves. When I mean playful you might experience them making good use of the powerful tail while climbing you like a tree. Also just try playing with one for 10 minutes and then trying to get it back into its enclosure...haha, once you get them going its hard to get them to calm down.

REALLY fun animals, I highly recommend them to a patient keeper interested in a fun and beautiful new pet.

For the most part my Brazilian rainbow boas are VERY tame. I've been nipped by almost all of mine before. But its usually because I'm quick to grab them even in shed. And its usually when they are in shed when I get nailed. I don't mind it at all.
For the most part when they are in my hands they never so much as think about striking me. They are probably some of the best tempered snakes I have owned.

Heck I have a Jungle Carpet who just refuses to calm down. Depending on what day of the week it is he will strike at you before he will strike at food. Either that or he just like to bite me :)

The BRB is my favorite snake, I've never seen one with a poor temper unless it was a wild caught.

Alex 33,
4'x2'x2' is an appropriate size for an adult.

Yup, all good info...When I first brought them into Canada in the 80's I was unboxing neonates from Texas, with a buddy. Then suddenly there was a power failure, and my herp room went black as pitch with no light...My buddy started screaming his head off saying he was being chomped. I thought it was all a big act.
The ones I was holding didn't bite me.
When I found a flashlight, his hand was dripping with blood, another good reason for Linoleum in the herp room instead of carpet. LOL
....It was funny..in a wharped way
But yup, babies can be really nippy. They eat each other too, so separate housing is always a must.
