This snake was found dead on our back patio in Arlington, Virginia. Any ideas on what this may be? Some have suggested the shape of its head indicates that it may be poisonous, though it also slightly resembles a juvenile black rat snake. Copperhead? Water Moccasin?

Yes it was a juvenile Black Rat Snake. Too bad, nice looking little guy.
Here is a good guide for your state:
Snakes of Virginia (http://www.virginiaherpetologicalsociety.com/reptiles/snakes/snakes_of_virginia.htm)
This is a great example of why head shape is not always the best identifier. Pattern recognition is the best way to make a positive I.D.
