The other new arrival came in the other day! A male anery motley 66% het albino, born 2/27/16, from Ragin Redtails & Exotics. He's an itty bitty guy, and very very wriggly. lol Unlike the ghost female, he was quite docile when I got him out and didn't strike. He may soon become one of my favorites!

I have yet to weigh him or measure him, but I will do that after he eats and poops.

Thanks everyone! He's definitely a light snake, he's got striping on his sides, but they're so faded it's a bit difficult see, except down by his tail. The underside of his tail is jet black, except the tip, which is gray again. I tried showing that to my mom, and I don't think he liked that as he struck out, but missed, didn't even aim at anyone just the air. lol

I can't wait for him to settle in so I can get some outdoor shots.

Well he ate a hopper mouse on Monday, so if I can lug my butt out of bed on time later today for once, I'll try to get some outdoor shots of him!

The fake vines I had on order arrived Saturday iirc, so I put those in there and he seems to like them. :) He's been laying more out in the open since I put them in, for a couple days there he was staying inside his hides, but once I gave him the vine he started coming out again. It's a big 6' vine and takes up a decent portion of his tub. I couldn't figure out how to attach the suction cups so I just laid it on the ground. lol

Crona may have arrived docile, but he seems to be a bit bitey now that he's settled in. lol When I took him out to change his paper towels the day before feeding him (he pooped on them), he was a bit huffy when grabbing him. I held the hide over his face and grabbed him, and he struck once or twice when I got him.

The same was true when I got him out today. He was a bit strikey the whole time. He REALLY doesn't like his tail to be messed with, I tried to get a photo of his tail because it's black on the underside except the tip, but he kept striking at the camera lens. >.> He managed to actually bite me once, but after that the strikes seemed to stop. I think it was partly because my hands were sweaty because it's rather hot out, and he kept sticking to me and couldn't get a good grip, and partly because he's still a nervous baby.

It was really hot out so I didn't have him outside for long, but here are some outdoor photos so you can get a better idea of his colors.

Well, Crona has calmed down a lot! The last several handling sessions, he hasn't bit me or struck at me, and the last couple of sessions he didn't even huff at me when I went to grab him. He's also started sleeping in the open again, although he uses his hides he's not in them all the time anymore.

Crona has broken 100 grams! He weighed in at 105 grams just now. He's a little bit behind Nymeria's growth, but only by a month or two. She reached 100 grams around 4-5 months old, he's 6 months old end of the month. He still has yet to shed, so I'm really hoping he's not going to follow in Nymeria's footsteps and not shed for 6 months. :/

Crona finally shed! Now I can feel a bit more comfortable handling him. Plus, I should be able to move him out of quarantine soon! That way he's in the heated snake room once the weather turns cold enough.

He continues to be docile, and only occasionally gives me a huff when I pick him up. He's back to laying out in the open now that he's done shedding, and appears to have grown a decent bit. Going to give him some time to defecate and weigh him again.

Yeah, and his colors are hard to pinpoint, because during his light phase like in the photos above, he looks like he'll end up fading his colors almost completely away and looks kinda lavenderish. Then he hits a dark phase and he looks like a regular motley (minus any red of course). It will be interesting to see how he ends up.

Took Crona out yesterday and he gave the camera a couple swipes, but was good outside of that. Deep in a really dark phase, too.

According to SerpWidgets, he's nearly exactly 2', only a fraction of an inch off. lol Close enough for me. Due to his snappiness today, I didn't want to chance flattening him out and getting him more pissy.

This photo was taken during his snapping "spree."

Got some more recent shots of Crona. The last weight I grabbed off him was 126 grams, and of course the 2' length from my previous post. I have decided to move him from his 10 day schedule to 12-14 days. Unlike Tirel and Nymeria, he will be eating as normal over this winter, but next winter he will be fed half as often just like the girls, and the following winter completely fasted. Unless something makes me think otherwise.

He looks like he's grown a little bit since the last photo shoot! Not an extreme amount, but just a tad.

I'm hoping the sheen I'm seeing on him tonight is predicting a shed cycle to come...The camera doesn't really pick up on it too well but I've noticed a snake's iridescence changes just slightly right before they start to darken and then go blue. Even my sunglow girl Nymeria does it, although her iridescence is mostly pink and purple hues.

Actually I've found something different to be true in my snakes. The iridescence gets a little more noticeable and it looks different than normal. Up until they go blue, then it's gone until they clear up and by then it looks mostly normal until they shed.

Yup, he ate about 2 or 3 days ago so he was dark from that. When he's light, he's amazingly light. Makes it a little more difficult to determine when he's shedding.

bigsnakegirl785

Well it's almost a month later and no shed, who would have known a motley would throw me through a loop as much as an albino...his light/dark phases are just so different.

I put a photo of him up on SerpWidgets and he's grown another 2"-3" so there should be a shed soon I would assume...

I went around and photographed almost everyone tonight, so I could have recent photos. lol Of course, the 3 quarantines came last, and the only one I touched was Crona because I wanted to see if he was going into shed. It's hard to tell but I don't think so. Crona is almost as hard to tell an upcoming shed as an albino...his dark and light phases are just so extreme and his belly is a really light gray so any pinkish hues are hard to see. His dark phases also vary in intensity.

He's in a dark phase in all these photos.

He hasn't been on small mice long and he's already looking like he'll need an upgrade soon. The regular adult mice are way too big for him atm though, so he'll be on these awhile longer until he gains a tad more size. Nymeria was on small adult mice for maybe a few months before she was able to make the jump to jumbos, so it seems Crona is still growing very closely to Nymeria's rate.

https://68.media.tumblr.com/319e2b7dde93babd710770c101568269/tumblr_ojhvr1yBF61sjttato4_1280.jpg

And the next day, no sign of that mouse. There was a bit of a bulge in person, but I couldn't get the camera to focus at an angle that would show it (my shadow didn't allow enough light for the lens).

Well I think I spoke too soon. Crona went blue on the 18th, only 10 days after I took the photos above. He shed 3 days ago, and I fed him and weighed him this morning, and he came out at 148 grams. Once he digests a bit, I'm going to get another SerpWidgets photo and see if he'll let me stretch him out along my bed again for a more exact measurement.

I pulled him out on the 18th to give him clean paper towels to discover a very unhappy shedding Crona. He hiss/snorted like an angry cat he was so upset. Once he shed he gave no complaints about me touching him. lol

I came home after running errands the day he shed to find him out and about and clearly freshly-shed, so I took him out immediately for post-shed photos. He was in a lovely light phase.

Some more photos, taken last night. This time he made a short hiss at me, but was ok once I got him out. Some of my snakes are such drama queens, adorable drama queens, though. Luckily the few prone to hissing rarely ever hiss anymore and when they do they barely get a full breath out (unless in shed).

I tried unsuccessfully to measure him by hand, but he doesn't appear to have grown past 28" yet.

Yup, the extreme difference always throws me off when I'm trying to guess if he's starting a shed cycle or not. :/ Most of his pattern almost fades away in his light phase, and his tail looks like it WANTS to fade away. lol Then in his dark phase everything is dark, even his background color.

I gave him the smallest of the mediums, and it left no bulge, so next I'll be trying a normal-sized medium. If it seems too big, I'll switch between mediums and small adults until he's big enough to eat them every time.

Crona was the last one to get outdoor time yesterday. He didn't seem to enjoy the grass as much as the other two, he seemed pretty indifferent. Just chose a tuft of grass and curled up in it peeking up at me from in between a few grass stems.

And the last photo. He was wrapped around my wrist like a bracelet until I got up and started walking back in. Then he started reaching out with his head and I held out my hand for him to crawl on.

He is so awesome! If we ever get a 3rd snake I want to go for something bigger than our kingsnakes...but I fear a boa might be "too big". But man it's really tempting when I see ones like yours!

Most Boa imperators stay manageable - even females rarely exceed much over 7-8' and are generally calm snakes as adults. Of course there are outliers in both size and temperament but they're very much the exception.

Love boas-my favourite snake I think.

Bag - she's looking good. Beautiful body tone but then you feed yours properly.

7'-8' isn't really all that big, but many people do feel that is too large for their tastes. In which case, there are plenty of dwarf localities to choose from that shouldn't reach, let alone exceed, 6'. Tarahumara, Crawl Cay, Nicaraguan, etc. They get about the length of a ball python but much thinner.

Thanks! This is actually one of my males, though. :) He's starting to chunk up like Nymeria did around this size, so I may expect a similar body tone as he matures, but he's still a wee guy yet so we'll see. I love how his colors are progressing. :D

Apologies to the snake :).

It's nice when they start to fill out. I'll have to post some photos of Aunty Rachel. Her growth still surprised me. She's on a weaner rat every 3-5 weeks (I'm intentionally random between these points) and she's still growing like a weed.

Because of various things, like her shed cycle and a third freezer failure, I have yet to get Nymeria back on a 2 week schedule, but I swear she's also still growing. I haven't weighed her recently, but she was just under 470 grams last I weighed her iirc. She appears to have grown more in length since then as well. Crona's growing a bit slower, but being male that may be expected. Plus, he started out smaller than she did. She was 80 grams at only a month old and he was ~80 grams at 4 months old.

Ah I was imagining more like 10 feet, I clearly didn't research enough yet! 6-8 feet would possibly work for us. Is it safe to say males are generally smaller than females when it comes to most snake types? Anyways, I'll have to see what happens. I'd like our youngins to grow more before committing to another! Thanks for the other breed suggestions as well, definitely something to consider. But yeah, beautiful snake :D

They generally do, but often times given time to grow and if fed the same way as females, they will eventually get very close to the same size or bigger than a small female. I wouldn't hedge your bets on a specific sex if your aim is a smaller snake. Although it's usually the case, there's many exceptions to the rule.

The true red tailed Boa (Boa constrictor constrictor) often attains lengths of 10' plus and boas are one of the snakes of myths and legends so this misunderstanding over size is common.

No weight on Crona, as the new scale doesn't do grams (my father bought it), and it said he was 1.7 ounces which is 48 grams which is way way off. lol I'll have to buy some more AAA batteries for my old one, it fell and the batteries disappeared off to who knows where. He's definitely grown though!

Here he is all freshly shed and in a dark phase. Everyone in the "quarantine room" (quotations because they're long out of quarantine now just haven't had the energy to move them yet) except Tirel went into shed at the same time. Now Sanji and River are shedding, too.

The coat is because I had just gotten home and spotted the shed, so I had to take him out.
