Here's my friend Sara posing with a Royal Diadem Ratsnake. I try to get people over their fear of snakes as much as possible, unfortunately she was bitten during the photographing but even still she learned small to medium sized snakes don't hurt much. I usually use a dwarf boa because they move slowly and do not bite.

From the looks of that snake I'd say she's lucky she didn't get pooped on, LOL.

Yes, that snake has a "present" waiting for her. :D

I was the one who had to convince my husband that snakes aren't scary. It didn't even occur to me that snakes were more of a "guy thing" until recently when it came up in conversation with a breeder I was buying a ball python from. He was surprised that I was so into snakes and that I thought the hatchling was cute. "Chicks think puppies are cute, not pythons." Well, I sure begged to differ. He said, "If you go to a reptile convention you'll see that the gender ratio is... uneven." I haven't been to one (I live in rural South Dakota and the nearest one would be Denver) but it just seems silly to me that women wouldn't be equally interested in reptiles.

I find that my Russian rat snakes are awesome ambassadors because they are super friendly and willingly climb right into your hands. My corn snakes are also good for that. They are mellow and laid back.

you might be surprized how many of us girls are into snakes. went to a small reptile rally not too long ago and there was quite a lot of us there.

Honestly, I think it's pretty close to 50/50.

I've been to several expos and none of them were weighted towards male-appearing people, although the booths were dominated by male-appearing people. I wouldn't say it's 50/50 woman/man because I'm sure there are plenty of people of other genders in our hobby.

It's amazing how a reptile can sense fear. It must be a higher brain function that they possess.

Plus, although I know a photo is just a brief instant, she got her hands kind gripping him up and not supporting the middle of the body. Maybe that had the snake a bit uneasy. It seems like coming at them from below (not like a predator) and, in the example of an active fast mover, turning your hands into a snake treadmill underneath them, works most of the time. Still, it was probably even more valuable that your friend learned that it couldn't really hurt her anyway.

I had like the complete opposite idea that SerpentineDream had. I thought it would be much harder to find other girls in the hobby. I've never been to a reptile show so I can speak on that, but since I got into snakes I've found that almost all the people I know with reptiles are actually girls. All my reptile friends in town, minus one coworker, are girls. The majority of all my friends online that have reptiles are also girls [and the reason some of them have snakes is my fault!]. And I've noticed that a lot of members on here are girls as well. It's kind of nice not being the only one. I was afraid, being a girl, that I'd be more of an outcast in the community so I'm really happy that isn't the case.

I go to the white plains and hamburg shows occasionally. I see quite a few women at both. I have no idea the percentages, but certainly there are many at both shows. Getting both genders involved is absolutely great anyway because the biggest threat to the hobby in the US (and I imagine in many other places) are insane and needless regulations.

Is that one of those super expensive morphs I started seeing at shows?

There's tons of women I see in shows. I do remember some years back that there wasn't too many but nowadays there's just as many, if not more.

Well I'm a woman and I love reptiles, arachnids, insects... pretty much any of the "underdog" animals that "normal people" hate. Being normal is overrated.

Amen to all that Pareeee (except I can't handle spiders and I'm not a woman haha)

Krok: Do you mean the girl or the snake. The girl is from a African x European breeding, definitely not line bred, the snake is a naturally occurring form that occurs in the middle east.

It seems to be fairly even locally and at the local shows.

We have an FB business page for our reptiles, with 1,180 likes currently. I find the demographics section fascinating, it tells you what countries, states and cities your fans live in, breaks down the percent of which gender they are and then how many percent of which gender is in different age brackets. The age brackets by gender is really interesting.

Awhile ago the overall gender ratio was 49% women and 50% men, it doesn't break it down if there is less than a full percentage point on one side or the other. It maintained there for a really long time. After the last bunch of new likes, it is now at 46% women and 53% men.
18 to 24 year olds are equal in numbers and all other age brackets but one, are out numbered by the men, anywhere from less than a full percentage point up to 5 full points. The one group that is out numbered by the women is aged 55 to 64, at 2% women and 0.847% men.
It's a tiny sample size, with many variables, so can't really draw any conclusions but I still find it interesting.

Oh that is really interesting. I would not have guessed women trumped men in that age bracket, I was actually expecting a younger group to be the one.
[Also I believe I'm one of the women on the group, just not in that particular age group of 55-64 haha]

I wonder how it breaks down by region. The breeder I talked to is in New Mexico. I'm only assuming he was referring to cons in his area though.

It makes me happy that snakes are popular with women too. I had a sneaking hunch that might be the case, regardless of who shows up at cons in NM.
