View Full Version : Introducing Nygma
Well heres hoping the pictures load right. I tend to screw these things up :)
Here is my new addition, Nygma. I got him off fauna from a guy down in san diego and he arrived a few days ago now. He ate his first rat pup with me...living up to their excellent feeding responses. So far he enjoys perching up at night for a bit and tucking himself under his puppy pads that I'm using at the moment:)
He seems a bit nervous at first but I havent had any issues picking him up and holding him.

Aww man why does everyone keep buying them now while in waiting for fall time.

I personally did it so that when you finally buy in the fall time you'll have that much more appreciation when you receive yours.
You're welcome :)

When was your carpet hatched Zelg? I love the ? in his head pattern. It reminds me of the Riddler from Batman. If I could get a jag that I knew had no neuro issues I'd snatch one up in a nanosecond. They're the most beautiful of the carpets IMO.
@ Blaze- Tis the season for new carpets! Don't delay.

All jags have neuro issues due to the genetic combo, it's just a matter of degree. Not a big deal for a captive animal, and it's not like they'll be released into the wild to fend for themselves. (Unless they're destined to become FL's next invasive species... lol.) I'm not partial to the idea either Ziggy, but seeing how great they look I can certainly understand why they're popular regardless of the neuro flaw.

Edward Nygma is the Riddlers real name. :)
I previous owner sent some info...ill check to see if it has a hatch date on it tomorrow....
Kinda funny, Mike Curtin produced a DJJ with a black ? named Riddler and owned by Moana McAdams (MoJo's Reptiles)...Insane DJJ, very much like Gamma jag status. Zelg, yours has a "negative" image of a ?. Very cool pattern indeed. Nice pick up. Post up more pics as this guy puts on more size please!!!

That animal really has both serious coloration and patterning. The head stamp is icing on the cake. Congrats. Shows true quality...

Not sure on the hatch date. The best info I have is an invoice from the original owner to the previous owner thats dated May 11, 2015.
As far as genetics go...Produced by G&G Reptiles - Bob and Ed Gibson
Under the description it says "Headhunter 50% jungle jag x VPI/Lazik/Hamper Jungle."
I dont know exactly what to make of that. I'll post the pics of the parents...

Nice one Zelg! I love those jungle jags with the high contrast and lots of yellow. I was wondering the genetics and I just had to scroll a little further. The parents look great too.
Nygma says hello.

Its so hard to get a good head shot with a phone cam.
And what a pain in the butt to get arboreal types off of their perches lol. Just when I think I have him nearly unwrapped, he backs up and tightens his grip! Clever little bugger.

Looking good Zelg. You're right about getting them detached from stuff. They can hook that tail on pretty much anything.
Actually, not all jags suffer from neuro or have it at all. Some never show any symptoms and live completely neuro free. Some develop it later (normally after a stressor such as extreme high or low temps, extreme overhandling), and some have been recorded losing it. It depends.
They are stunning animals, I almost got one earlier this year at an expo. The problem here perhaps more than the states is that genes are horribly muddied here.

I'd be interested to see your sources on this.
I worded that wrong. The correct phrasing was that some jags never show symptoms. And the record of some losing it is something I read a while back on a UK reptile forum. Might be a bit dated, Ill try to find the link if it's still around.'
Not the link I originally found, but this seems to suggest not all jags suffer from neuro. Not sure on credibility, and wouldn't put much faith in accuracy though; Jaguar Neurological Issue - Let's do an official count of how many this really affects. - Morelia Pythons Community (http://www.moreliapythons.com/forums/forum/morelia/carpet-pythons/morphs/12445-jaguar-neurological-issue-let-s-do-an-official-count-of-how-many-this-really-affects?t=16386)
Thanks Herpo. My suspicions that there are no true studies on this, but I think that Anthony C. (who has been a long time player with Morelia) makes a valid point in that thread. There's a butt load of jags out there, there's not much debilitating neuro out there. Maybe more "worry" than reality? The degree of visible neuro is debatable.
Yeah, alot of neuro is sadly because some owners worry so much over it that the snake will stress itself into more visible/debilitating neuro. Sad though, because these stunning snakes are often denied the care of worthy keepers by the stigma that they a ticking time bombs.
Took Nygma out today for some handling and fresh air...and of course a couple of pics. Had a question though...I've had him since about 5/19/16. He has been eating rat pups great, drinking water, etc....doing great as far as I can tell. My concern though is that he hasnt gone into shed. My BP at this age was doing into shed seemingly every few weeks so I'm not sure if carpets shed less often or what. Thoughts?

Still looking great Zelg. I'm surprised he hasn't shed yet. My carpets usually shed every 4-6 weeks. I know you said he's eating rat pups. How often are you feeding him? It may be time to increase his prey size. Do you know how much he weighs?

Looks like he's big enough for small rats now, though it's hard to tell for sure from the pics. My carpets (and most other snakes as well) are still actively growing, and they all usually shed approximately monthly. If I feed them mice or rats toward the large end of their capacity they do seem to shed more often.
Thanks for the replies.....I am feeding him about every 10 days. His bag of pups is nearly done (finally getting my bp on them as well) so I should probably see what the next size up is for the place I get them from. The petco small rats are quite a bit bigger if i recall. Id have to double check. The pups seem to be about as big around as Nygma though he may be thicker now.
Oh btw...i dont know how much he weighs. I keep thinking i need a scale and its times like these where that thought is reinforced. Probably time to just get one. That said, the website i order from says the pups are 20-29 grams. The weened rats are 30-39 grams so i may get a bag of those. I cant imagine theyd be too big.
Far too little food for a growing carpet of that size. That's why he hasn't gone into shed. He would with ease take 60-70 gr rats.

I used the 'feed 10% of body weight' rule to determine when to switch my carpets to small rats. After thawing them I had a hard time believing that they'd be able to manage the meal. I certainly wouldn't have offered my colubrids a proportionally sized meal. But then they took them and resumed their perches to look for more. So, you're probably safe to step them up.

I agree with the others. Looks like it's time to increase his prey size. A small rat sounds about right for your guy Nygma. I feed my young carpets 10-15% ( sometimes a bit more) of their body weight per feeding also. That's a pretty good guideline to use. I feed my hatchling and juvenile carpets every 7 days and the adults eat every 10-14 days.
OK great guys...thanks for the advice. Small rats it will be.

Zelg- You know your snake better than we do. We're just guestimating prey size based on the pictures you posted. If you feel more comfortable feeding smaller prey items you can always offer more than one. Just for comparison sake my 230g Bredli eats a 25g rat pup every 5 days. Your Jag is easily twice as big as my guy and you're feeding him every 10 days. I'd heard and read that carpets could take down pretty large prey but when the breeder told me that my 125g coastal could smash a 33g jumbo mouse I tried and saw for myself. My carpets eat 40g chicks at 250g. Don't stuff your carpet but don't underestimate them either.

Ah thought I responded about him eating last week. Well he took a small rat no problem. It looked a little big for him but with him up on his perch afterwards I could barely tell he had anything in him so, small rats it is. He'll be getting another tonight. Thanks for the advice guys.
Also, got a phone upgrade so of course I have to include his new headshot lol.

I love looking at his eyes. So cool looking.
The little buggar finally shed last night. After bumping him up to small rats, he ate 1 rat two weeks in a row and then went into his hide and stayed there. The third offering was refused and i was getting worried about him no longer perching and being in his hide constantly. Fed him again a few days ago from his hide and his feeding response was normal again. Worke up today with a beautiful shed, not one tear in it....until i tore it while unwrapping it lol.
I feel so much better now that hes shed.

Ah, that's a slippey slope. Next it will be modeling contracts and exotic location photo shoots, drug addictions, extreme diets, etc. IMO it would be better to maintain a lower profile and let Nygma live a quieter life... lol.
