View Full Version : Breeding Siblings...Good or Bad???

I see quite a bit of m/f pairs sold that are siblings from the same clutch. Is it ok to breed that closely related snakes? Thanks!

Its always better if you can find different blood lines to breed but inbreeding snakes isn't like people, breeding son back to mom or father to daughter is how some of the morphs were produced.

It is okay. It's not good or bad though.

If it happens too frequently, generation after generation, then it becomes bad.

Depending on the species it's pretty easy to diversify.

This ^^^^^^ . Also when you breed for a certain morph and your intention in a certain project may call for you to breed back the offspring to the parents. It's done frequently but like was said previously you want to mix in different bloodlines after several times. But yes it's ok to breed back offspring to the parent. Oh, yes and the same for sibling to sibling.

Siblings breed all the time in nature...it's how localities become distinguishable. Outcross when possible, of course.

Thanks for all the great replies and shared knowledge. It was something I've been wondering about. I don't have any breeding plans or siblings for that matter. Just something that popped in my head seeing related pairs being sold.

NP. Pretty much acceptable, but there comes a time when a different bloodline should be included.

When it comes to outcrossing you have to do your homework though.

For example, if Andy and I bought the newest morph from Person A and then bred it to our collection. Can someone buy an animal from me and Andy and say it's outcrossed or "different bloodlines"? Not really. Once the cousins bred then the blood would be mixed all over again and negating the entire thing.

Yes when new morphs come out it happens more frequently. Or less animals brought in from the wild. The good part is with a little research and a few questions of "who do you buy your founding stock from?" Can go a long way.

Also good news is species like ball pythons still have CH and WC animals around so new blood is brought in and was brought in often
