So, I've been trying to get a new snake for a little over a year, and I just got the notification that he's on his way :D

I really wanted a colubrid this time, and more specifically a rat snake. I would've settled fine for a corn snake, but the problem is that I plan on moving to Georgia after college to spend time with family. Georgia is a huge hub for most North American species, and unfortunately anything that's native there (unless a "pest"), is illegal to keep.

This means that I've devoted a lot of time into researching my options and really wanted to settle for either an Asian or western North American rat snake (although I did look into other species), and Wednesday I saw that Sunshine Serpents had posted an ad for a yearling baird's rat snake. After emailing two other places and still having not received a response, I can't say how pleased I am that he answered back in a few minutes after emailing him! (That isn't what this is about, but I'll give credit where credit is due).

So, the snake will be here tomorrow and you guys can definitely expect pictures of him (now that my busted phone got replaced)! Ik I also don't post much anymore, so this was a little bit of a jumbled, unorganized update tied in around the new snake.

Congrats! My white sided rat came from them and he was perfect when he came in! Zerkle also has a huge list right now of available rat snakes...if you wanted more than one:D

Congrats on the new addition Tiny. I live in GA and hate that we can't keep Eastern Indigos. :(

Haha! Don't tempt me ;)

Those beauties are gorgeous though. Gotta love me a good calico, although the big blues are one of my many favorites. We'll see how the little baird's is though before I worry about another snake. They're supposed to be calm although I'm hoping for a little attitude with this one.

I feel it. I'm wanting to go to the vet school over in Athens, but I'm probably going to be taking a break after graduation before I dive into that mess. Regardless of that though, there's a lot of species that are off-limits in Georgia. I've heard people getting around that law by breeding hybrids (like sinaloan milk snakes x corn snakes), but I doubt all that mess is worth being able to own a few species.

He's heeeere....

He made a big fuss when I opened the container, acting like he was going to strike in the attentive "s" pose and all. Got him out though and he was pretty relaxed about it, didn't strike at all although I couldn't get him to stop moving. So, I'm pleased to introduce the star of this thread: Al Capone

Got him into his new enclosure and watched him for a bit. He went straight to work testing out all of the possible escape routes, which I was really happy about because I was worried about this one spot where I had to drill through the screen to get the thermostat probe through. Couldn't get past it.

(I'm sorry about the lack of light and flash in this photo, the light bulb went out in my room and his lights haven't arrived yet).

So that's him. I'll update again later once he starts to develop his adult colors. He has a LITTLE BIT of red lining some of his scales, so you can probably expect more of Al Capone sooner rather than later.

Edit:

Well... Can't say any of my sand boas do this...

Thanks! Acrobat indeed, although he's settled down quite well since. Only found him up on the rim once since Tuesday, and he's been using his hides a lot more. He's doing better than I expected so I plan on feeding him later today, and I'll update later on his progress thread with hopefully good news :)

Thanks! He's a doll to have around, after all I'm not used to having a snake that's actually cage active (Like at all). I did post a few more pictures though and gave a little update on him at this link:

Which is where I'll be updating on him from now on :)
