View Full Version : Show ME!
Hi all,
So I'm nowhere near experienced enough to keep elapids. I love the cobras, gaboon vipers and death adders. Or the red bellied blacks. But they're all awesome, so I'd like if you elapid keepers could show some of your collection. I know some members like Nightflight have some gorgeous animals.
Cheers,
Herpo

You listed two elapids and two vipers. There are a few venomous keepers on here so hopefully someone can help you out. I have not seen anyone on here that keeps Australian hots.

There are a lot of cool pictures if you go to the venomous forum section.

I know, but I've already gone through all of them XD.

As long as we are correcting people, he only mentioned one viper.
Herpo, if you have a Facebook there are a lot of venomous groups that are pretty busy. Viperkeeper's (https://www.facebook.com/groups/881860311845965/?fref=nf) group is very active, my news feed is inundated daily with pictures of all sorts of beautiful animals I only dream of keeping.

Interesting I always assumed death adders were vipers due to their looks. You know what they say about assuming.

Death adder are not true adders, they belong to the elapid family.

They really are pretty cool critters. Interesting how they evolved the form and function (ambush predators) of a viper, in an a part of the world devoid of vipers. They have one of the best caudal luring displays you'll see. They even have elliptical pupils, the only Elapid I'm aware of with elliptical pupils. I've won some bets with that information.
Thanks all. FWK, heading over to Facebook now to check viperkeeper out. Thanks heaps.

Check out Jerry The Snake Man's Youtube channel, I know he keeps some Elapid's but not sure if he keeps anything Australian native. Viperkeeper does so check out his channel as well.

Interestingly enough this is called convergent evolution. The same thing happened with the GTPs of AU and the Emerald Tree Boas of the amazon. They both evolved very similarly since the continents split because the environments they evolved in were very similar to eachothers. I can only imagine this is the same case with the Adders and Vipers, only major difference being the SCARY AS ALL S**T folding fangs vipers have.
If there's one reason to like Australia, its our beef pies and the fact that we don't have those suckers trying to kill us, despite all the other things.
I saw an answer on Yahoo! about vipers, some dude said they have "3 inch fangs." Talk about misinformation. That gave me a laugh.

Two things. First, what's a beef pie? Second, I was under the impression that Gabon vipers had fangs in the 2-3" range. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I think gaboon fangs top out around 2 inches.

That is what I was led to believe, but I never measured all the gaboon fangs in the world to prove it.

Well, why not? What's the hold up, Jerry?

You're missing out friend, beef pies are the cornerstone of Australian food! Bah to your pumpkin pies, real men have MEAT in their pies. ;)
And jesus christ if Vipers actually get 2-3 inch fangs I'm amazed.
I'm not overly familiar with the imperial system, I must've overestimated how long an inch was. But man, you guys can keep your vipers haha. I'd rather get mauled by a Dropbear than step on a bloody Gabby viper hahaha.
I'd also like to add that Gabbies are easily the most attractive natural snake I've EVER seen, period.

Ah those pesky Dropbears - gotta watch them ;)
Agree re: meat pies also - with gravy and mushy peas. There's a great pie and pea stall in Sydney but for a real pie it needs to be a steak and ale pie with suet pastry and eaten in a Yorkshire pub with a pint of real ale. Mmmmmm
Are they anything like shepards pie? Mashed potatoes, gravy, meat, mixed vegetables and a crust on top? And yes I would agree, ever since i was a kid gaboon vipers have fascinated me. Just utterly amazing snakes.

Not really. Shepherds pie is a mince based filling with mashed potato on top. A steak and ale pie for eg id's lumps of steak cooked in ale and gravy plus maybe some onions, mushrooms etc and put in a shirt crust or suet pastry.
Best pie I had was a game pie; rabbit, bacon, cider, apples, leeks, prunes and black pudding. Gorgeous...
I'll have to look up a recipe and try it.
Danny, the game pie sounds awesome! I wanna try one now!

It was. Ate it at a proper old pub in a little village in the South of England. They had sourced the rabbit locally from a local game keeper so the meat was perfect. Proper handmade local pie. Mmmmm
This pie talk seems to have highjacked the thread hahah, sorry Herpo! ;)

Pie talk is more important than snake talk surely :)
But yeah, sorry for the hijack...
It's cool, I got what I needed! And pie is awesome, so please, continue! ;)

Is the pie stall still there herpo? From memory it was in the Kings Cross area and well known...
