after years of wanting i finally got my first snake. got a lovely young corn, hes still very skittish and defensive any advice on how to get him used to handling, hes very active since i brought him home exploring his new home and all his hides.. should i wait a few days till he is more relaxed in the new environment or is it best to just go straight in and pick him up. i do not want to stress him to much.. Thanks

Hello congrats on the new corn most critters need about a week or two unmolested to reduse stress from the move and other then keep holding him and don't shy from his bites to much there isn't much to tameing a snake I'm pretty new to snakes myself but have done plenty of reading on the subject of reptile care

dear ant 91 congrats on the new snake. it might be a good idea to let him get used to his surroundings for a few days before you try handling him too much.

It's tough but I don't handle new arrivals until they've eaten for me 2-3 times. This gives them time to acclimate to their new environment and to realize I'm not going to eat them. After they've eaten a few times I start with short handling sessions of 2-5 minutes and increase that as we go.

Congrats on getting a new reptile! Just allow him time in the new surroundings. Key word here is "young". They are usually defensive and require time and feeding to begin to feel secure and tolerate handling sessions.
