View Full Version : Empty enclosure syndrome found in many reptaholics

I really was trying to be good. I've got my (6) snakes in AP T8s but I still have two empty 40g tanks and an empty tub hanging around. I was just joking around with my girlfriend (feeling her out) and mentioned getting a new snake. My joke / logic was that I'm not taking up any more space, I'm just making better use of the space I currently have. She surprisingly didn't fuss or offer any resistance so I pounced and got serious real quick. I'll be taking delivery on a 2015 male Bredli Carpet Python in about two weeks. I have to order a few supplies and butter up the little lady a bit. I think she's actually pulling a fast one on me this time. She casually mentioned that she wants to go to NY for 3 days to visit her girlfriend this summer and guess who's buying the ticket? Oh well, I guess that's the cost of doing business sometimes :). Here's a picture from the breeder. Of course I'll post more when he arrives. Big thanks and shout out again to Nick Mutton at Inland Reptile.

Nice. A relationship where win win solutions are found is great. She gets her trip, you get your snake, no one sacrifices too much.

Uh oh EL! The addiction having a place in your heart is showing through. I know the feeling well. Nice that girlfriend wants to begone while the guys get ready to hang out. Fantastic looking carpet. Nothing but the best, I heard that.

Ooooh....bredlies are soooo gorgeous! They get too big for me though lol. I'm sticking with my little IJs for now XD
I know that feeling all too well too. That's why I got my current male IJ....I had an extra tub lol! I will really have to battle that feeling while building my custom enclosures though. Every tine I build a new enclosure, it will empty a tank! XD
My plan is to eventually have all custome enclosures and to sell the tanks I have now. At least the ones I don't have filled with ine thing or another....lol I'm so bad....
Beautiful Bredli! You're going to love it! The reddish brown that those guys develop looks so slick.
Minkness...you may be surprised to know that some IJs can get pretty big too! I had a 100% pure Hamper line IJ male that was near 7 feet and almost as thick as a tennis ball. That's not the norm, though. I will post one pic of the big fella here, but I don't want to hijack this thread!

Thanks all. I was torn about which carpet to get next. I started to get a female zebra or caramel jag to pair with my jungle or coastal. Since I decided I won't be breeding the critters I opted for more diversity and went with the Bredli. I've heard that they're really hardy animals with great temperaments.
Beautiful IJ Andy!

Nice, from what I've read about bredli's they're very hardy and easy to care for. Beautiful too, generally good dispositions, just grow a bit larger. Seems you're sliding ever further down that slippery slope... lol.

Thanks TnB. I've heard those same descriptions of Bredli. I was a little concerned about their adult size, and almost bought another jungle instead, but the breeder says a big part of that depends on how much the snake is fed. I like large, healthy, hearty critters but plan to keep the Bredli on the smaller side. And the slide down the slippery slope has come to a peaceful stop. I've finally reached my optimal snake keepers euphoria. I have all the critters I can and want to happily care for :) . 7 is one of my favorite numbers :) .

For sure! End of the road for me. I have a thing for numbers and my next option would be 10. I'll stop now. :D

Shhh....see, you have TWO male carpets. I thinkyou need a female jag next to make it an even 2.2 ;)

See you understand my logic. That's why I locked myself in by getting a male Bredli. Had I gotten a female for one of the other males I certainly would have been compelled to get another female for the second male. Now I would need to add 3 females for balance which I knew I wouldn't follow through with. There's a method to my madness!:D

Oh, I missed the gender of this guy lol. Just means you need a female bredli, jag, and super caramel ;)

Nice pick up Zig! it almost looks like a hypo. I hope yours has a better disposition than my pair. They can be pretty fiesty at times. I generally use a hook to keep the sharp end at a bit of a distance from me. One thing I will say to their credit is on feeding day I dont even thaw a rat for them until after after everyone else is done. If theres ever a rejected meal they are the most reliable garbage disposials I have. However with your pits and other carpets this may never be an issue for you lol. Good luck and cant wait to seee pics when it arrives.
Amazing looking boy !! I'm inlove with his colour, congrats Zig :)

Thanks all. I'm excited to get the new guy home. Weather permitting I'll be taking delivery on the male Bredli next week. If he turns out like either of his parents I'll be ecstatic. It's the Bredli pairing 15-AF2 if anyone wants to see.

I got my tank set up and running today. I'll use an IR heat lamp to boost my ambient temps from 77F to about 82F Hot spot is 90F at the moment. I'll probably cover 3 sides of the tank too if he seems a bit shy. The new occupant should arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Interesting thing about Australian snakes is that the further toward the center you go the more badass the snakes end up being. Bredli's being right where all the action is can mean they're a little temperamental at times, only because in the wild they face more predators and face a harsher environment. This statement also applies to pretty much everything, plants, wildlife, etc.
Bredli's are damn pretty snakes though, and I love the complexion on EL's, not to mention that his tank puts my plastic tubs to shame! She'll really stand out and make a great display. :)

@ Sam- It must be awesome to have so many amazing species of snakes and lizards literally in your back yards. I have a smaller empty tub and was torn about which one to set up. I chose the tank because of the ability to raise my ambient temps in the colder months and carpets are just too beautiful to not be seen :). I spend many late night hours watching them roam their enclosures or just perching.

Nothing better than waking up in the morning with kangaroo's at our fence, a koala in our tree and an eastern brown snake in our lawnmower. ;)
Completely agree though we're lucky to have such wonderful species native. Although we're restricted to natives only in the hobby, so no pinstripe pastel banana ball pythons for me!

I've never been a fan of ball pythons, so IMO that's not such a bad thing... lol :p
Odd thought, would it be legal to import carpet pythons to Oz from another country? Say, a really spectacular hypo jag or some such that wasn't available locally?

Thats a really good question TnB, though knowing Oz customs it wouldn't surprise me if the snake was seized anyway. Would probably require a permit of some description.
Nice thing is here we have some CPs that are hard to get elsewhere such as the Murray Darling/Inland CPs (which are known to be the most durable and docile CPs.) although the US can get Irian Jaya's which I've heard are wonderful.
Being the centre of the carpet python trade we have a great range to choose from and its generally easy to get pretty much whatever you want. And at a lower price, its great! And most of the bloodlines here are pure as opposed to some of the USA Jungles being diamond hybrids or coastal hybrids. Ive heard it can be difficult to get your hands on certain 'pedigree' snakes.
Thing about BPs that I like is the fact that they 'ball' up when frightened as apposed to being defensive (like some carpet pythons). Not to say that all balls are docile but the chance for a nippy BP is lower than that of a CP. And the morphs are INCREDIBLE! in balls
EDIT: Did some research and yes, you need an 'Import Permit' :(
