Welcome aboard! Corn snakes are great starter snakes! I recommend ordering a copy of "Corn snakes: The Comprehensive Owner's Guide (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1882770706?keywords=corn%20snakes&qid=1453097944&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1)" by Kathy & Bill Love. It covers all of your basics and will give you a solid head start into keeping snakes in general.

I had that book when I got my first corn and yes it's excellent. Really in depth whilst remaining accessable to the lay hobbyist.

They're great snakes to begin with - generally tame, active and stay a very manageable size. Undemanding in terms of viv setup. You have the choice of any colour under the sun as well.

Photos are a prerequisite of any acquisition.

Welcome. I am doing some what the same thing of hovering around the forums and gathering information on snake keeping.
Only, it has been maybe a year since first finding this forum and getting to a comfort level... lol
