Capitve Sulawesi island retic?

Okay so I was in a local shop around town and they had some Sulawesi island retic for sale( breeders and babies not in the best condition in my opinion). But anyway they were selling them for 600 dollars a piece (the babies) and I was wondering if that is a over priced. It seemed to be to me. I don't plan on the buying one but I was just wondering. Because around the net a normal retic seems to go for no more than 100 - 200 dollars a piece

Yeah, I agree. Overpriced to say the least. Why not just wait for the reptile expo there in Ohio? You will get better quality and save money! Local shops will always be more pricey. Although I believe you may spend more than 100.00 or 200.00 for a retic. Baby retic maybe. Happy hunting!

Yeah I wasn't planning on purchasing the little guy but I am definitely looking into getting a dwarf or an SD. They seemed pretty overpriced on a lot. They had a female motley boa for $300. I just wish I currently had the space for a normal retic but once we buy our house a 6 foot enclosure wont be hard to do so I'll just wait a few more months I guess

I'm not sure what Sulas are going for, but chances are they're going to be going for more than the common retics you'll find in captivity. But I'm also not sure how easy to find Sulas are, either. Maybe an experienced retic keeper can weigh in on that.

Although a lot of people probably disagree, I'd try to get something a lot bigger than a 6' enclosure for a standard mainland retic or a dwarf. If you get a super dwarf, a 6' enclosure should be plenty, though.

Sulawesi retics here (used to?) cost a lot more.. Nice females up to 1000€ males 650ish€, these prices are from last time i visited hamm.. Think that was 2012... haven't seen any for sale in this or my neighbouring countries since. Sulawesi is (was?) a hard to get locality, it used to be in high demand too but i haven't kept up with demand/price for years《hence my caution, however i dont see any evidence the price has changed, just like then i can not find a single pure pair for sale anywhere (just checked it out)..If these are real Sulawesi Retics.. 600 is not a bad price in my mind, but Makassars used to sometimes get sold as Sula's...

I agree with big snake girl btw... Sula's (or any mainland.. and imo not even a dwarf) are not snakes to be kept in a 6ft enclosure! Sulas are True giants. You might have to vacuum seal it to get it in and out of a 6ft-er

Oh I always read they do well in 6 footers. Well these guys were keeping breeders in 55 gallon tanks!! ( reasoning for saying they were kept in poor condition and a few other reasons) so what do you crazy retic keepers house them in lol

I agree about a mainland not being kept in a six foot enclosure but most dwarfs will do fine. A 6x2x2 enclosure will house a 12' retic. My male platinum is 10' and has plenty of space.

Yeah that's understandable. I honestly wouldn't mind building a large enclosure for a retic anyway. I think it would be an awesome part of my reptile room once I get there. Thanks guys I really appreciate the feed back

I doubt they were breeders if they were in 55 gallon tanks. A breeder size Sula would be massive.

Thats what the store had them labeled as and they seemed to be about the same size as the one picture. They were coiled up also. I mean I'm no retic expert by any means but I am fairly confident that these were adults that just weren't properly housed

Also labeled as do not sell. They weren't selling the breeders because those were the Sulawesi they used to create the small 600 dollar one previously mentioned

As mentioned Sulas are massive, they're one of the biggest retic localities. If they were breeders and look like IW17's retic in a 55 gallon tank, they weren't Sulawesi retics. A breeder pair would not physically fit in a 55 gallon tank. Young ones, sure, but not full grown adult breeding animals. Most likely those were either young retics, or super dwarves.

Exactly. A breeder female would be around 15' or more. And heavy. Most likely they're lying about being breeders, or being Sulas. If you go in again, snap a few pics and post them. Babies and their breeders. That would clear stuff up somewhat.

Quite possibly mislabled. Ill have to take some pictures next time I'm in to give you guys a better idea
