View Full Version : 2016 Herping Thread
Well, I figured since it's a new year, I'd make a new thread for my finds in the field. After having a very warm December, it did finally cool down. I went out on January 2nd and managed to spot a few things even though it was 50 degrees and overcast.
One of two Broad-Banded Water Snakes. Both of them were found out and about regardless of the cooler weather.

I also saw quite a few Green Anoles when flipping various things.

Cool! I don't live near very good herping places, but I will be traveling this year and will document what I find!
Thanks guys. I will keep updating this thread throughout the year. I will mainly be herping in southeast Louisiana, but will also be exploring some areas of other Gulf Coast states from time to time. I have a few goals for this year, but the one species I really would like to see is the Pygmy Rattlesnake.
Well I went herping a couple days ago and saw a few snakes, but didn't get any pictures. I had seen some western ribbon snakes, broad-banded water snakes, and a large black-masked racer. I went out today and didn't see much, but I was able to to get some pictures this time

Here's a different angle that really captured his brown coloration.

An unidentified frog if anyone wants to help me out! Found in SE Louisiana.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e313/connor323/Mobile%20Uploads/20160108_151933_zpsnvgyhl1y.jpg (http://s42.photobucket.com/user/connor323/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20160108_151933_zpsnvgyhl1y.jpg.html)
Just an update, I got confirmation that the frog is a cricket frog.
I'm visiting my parents for the weekend (about an hour away from me) and found this dead in the dog's water bowl. It's a Greenhouse Frog, which an exotic species. This is the first one I've ever seen. From what I hear, they can't survive the colder temps, but this very mild winter we're having is probably allowing them to survive - pretty much every day it at least gets to the upper 50s, but it usually makes it into the 60s and some days still 70s.

Cool finds. Love me some Nerodia! :)
Cool finds. Love me some Nerodia! :)Thank you! I definitely see more Nerodia than any other species...western ribbons might be tied though. It was nice to see a couple MS greens though, I hadn't seen one in a couple of years. I see broad-banded and diamond-backed water snakes all the time, and then yellow-bellied water snakes pretty frequently as well. I'll hopefully go out herping tomorrow since it's supposed to get to about 70 degrees any sunny. I'll update on if I find anything!
Here are a few finds from today. There were others, but these are the only pictures.
A couple of young Broad-Banded Water Snakes

And this wasn't found today, but another Greenhouse Frog

Here are a couple of my finds from yesterday. I can't really complain about this January weather considering that we have at least one day a week that's warm enough for things to start coming out.
Broad-Banded Water Snake - I'm going to try to limit my pictures of these guys since I find so many of them. I'll just post the really impressive looking ones. In my opinion, this one was gorgeous.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e313/connor323/20160116_135302-1_zpstmuuplfn.jpg (http://s42.photobucket.com/user/connor323/media/20160116_135302-1_zpstmuuplfn.jpg.html)
And my first Common Garter of the year. This picture really didn't do him justice. His orange stripe was much more vibrant in person. He was fairly beat up. He had a bunch of scars, tail was clipped a little at the end, and his face was sort of mangled as well.

Great finds. I haven't seen a cotton since I was like 17. Good luck limiting yourself to the really impressive broad-bands. They're ALL impressive to me. :)
Great finds. I haven't seen a cotton since I was like 17. Good luck limiting yourself to the really impressive broad-bands. They're ALL impressive to me. :)The only reason I say that is because I see a lot of them. Like A LOT of them. Easily the most common snake in my area. We also have a good bit of cottons, however you really have to go in the more isolated areas to see them. Otherwise it's just chance that you might see one where people frequently go.
I went out yesterday and saw a few things, so I'll upload pictures later today.
Had a surprisingly warm day yesterday, so I went out. Here are a few pictures:

Nice finds so early in the year. So jelous you're finding snakes already. Only thing I can target now is salamanders; but there should be some migration to the vernals this upcoming week I'm excited about. I might need to make a 2016 herping thread aswell. ill be going out alot this year with my son.
Yeah we are having a very mild winter here. It has definitely cooled down, but we still get a day or two a week that is warm enough for everything to come out. It's warmer today and should stay that way through Monday or Tuesday, so I'm planning on getting out in the field a couple of times. Surprisingly though, we really don't have any salamanders in my immediate area.
You should definitely make a herping thread once you start finding stuff. I always enjoy seeing what other people find.
I went out for a couple hours today and it was kind of a let down. It was absolutely beautiful outside, but there just wasn't a lot out. Here is one of the five water snakes I found. I will try again in a couple of days and hopefully see some more stuff.

Will do, only things I've found so far this year have been 2 two lined salamanders, several dusky salamanders, a slimy salamander, and a few upland chorus frogs. We got the cold weather after New Years. We had a nice warm December, I found a big spotted salamander and 3 slimys on Xmas eve. The next few days will be nice here for salamanders so I plan to try and flip some over the weekend and cruise when the rain comes on Tuesday. Wish me luck, you seem to be rather lucky so far.lol
Well I wrapped up January with one last herping trip to a spot I've never been to. Overall, it was as good as I could've expected for being January, but I will definitely be going back a lot during the spring as it seems like it will be promising.
I finished up January with almost 50 snakes of 10 different species. I also saw plenty of lizards(five species), frogs(five species), and turtles(two species). Here are two of my finds from today.
Western ribbon snake
http://i63.tinypic.com/xfql1z.jpg
A nice sized black-masked racer(55"). By far the darkest individual I have ever seen.
http://i65.tinypic.com/i24sjm.jpg
Well the dark coloring on this racer had been bugging me. It just looked too much like a southern black racer to me. The reason I was thinking black-masked was because in this particular area, that's usually all we see(and they tend to be darker than black-masks in other areas of the state, but not this dark). However, after consulting with some very knowledgeable people, I have come to conclude that this is indeed a southern black racer or possibly a mix of black-masked and southern black.

Well February has been pretty slow for herping. It's been cool and even on the warm days I haven't been seeing a ton. Here are a few of my finds so far.
Common garter snakes

Well now that February has come to a close, I can say I'm pretty happy with the end result. The beginning of the month was slow, but it picked up towards the end. So here are some of my favorite finds from this month. Also on a side note, when I was in Pensacola, FL for a weekend I apparently missed a Pygmy rattlesnake (which is one of my target species) by about 10-15 minutes. I'll hopefully get one soon though.
Speckled kingsnake. Easily my favorite find this year. I had been looking hard for one of these guys since I hadn't seen one since August.

Mississippi ringneck. This is the smallest one I've found alive.

Dekay's brown snake. This was also the smallest dekay's I've ever found. Incidentally it was in almost the same exact spot as the ringneck.

And last, but certainly not least, a couple of young gray rat snakes

I can't wait to be able to get out.
Unfortunetly in Montana our animals won't be out until early may. That's one reason I love being in the South! Even when we have long, cold winters we still get to herp for at least 9 months out of the year. It's usually more than that though.
How did you even see that ringneck? thats too cute.I just happened to look down and I was about to step on him lol. It was just mere luck that I looked down when I did!
I know I've been fairly absent from the forum, but that hasn't been the case in the field. March has been a great month for me in regards to herping. I've found over 100 snakes this month consisting of thirteen species, along with multiple species of lizards, turtles, and frogs. Pics coming soon.
I'm amazed at that ringneck. What a gorgeous little snake and I'm amazed you were even able to spot it. You're eyesight has got to be good, lol.
I'm amazed at that ringneck. What a gorgeous little snake and I'm amazed you were even able to spot it. You're eyesight has got to be good, lol.I wouldn't say I'm really good at that many things, but I am good at spotting snakes lol. Family/friends still have no idea how I spot a lot of the things I manage to spot.
Still planning on uploading some finds from last month. Had plenty of great finds and was probably the single greatest month of herping I've ever had.
Well here's a brief preview of what's to come. I don't have time to upload all the photos I'd like to upload right now.
First off, a western mud snake. This has been on the top of my list for the past few years and they've eluded me until now. About a week after I found this, I found two more!

Glossy crayfish snake. I had only seen one of these before this year, and it was a brief look before it slipped away. Towards the beginning of March I saw this one and three others.

Lovely photos. Not much herping to be had in England at all. Grass snakes, adders and I think one or two lizard species but not at all common as far north as I live.
Keep the pictures coming - love seeing what other people have on their doorstep.

Nice finds, Bandit! You've had a productive spring. I've only been out on a couple of little trips. The temps have actually been pretty cool up here in N. AL lately. I might start another herping thread this year. I don't have much to add, so far, except some garters and a northern water snake.

we baby our indoor snakes so much. the ones on the outside seem like their skin is much rougher and have been through a lot more to get that way.
Thanks yall. This month has been slower, but I will upload some more pictures from last month soon. I've been extremely busy and haven't had as much time to go out, and when I have had a chance I hadn't been seeing much out of the usual species.
And Mac, that's true. I see a lot of snakes with plenty of scars and parts of their tails missing.

So far the only snakes I've found in April have been overseas. A quick 24 hr Hong Kong overnight produced a White Spotted Slug Snake as well as a Bamboo Pit Viper. No pics, just this video. Used a new camcorder, Sony AX53, which I'm liking. The video is in 4K for those who have that option. I don't, so let me know how it looks in 4K if you do.

Very cool finds, Lou. One of these days I'm going to get to do some exotic herping.
