Finally got back into Boas (pic)

Well, after a decade of raising and owning snakes of all shapes and sizes I have been on a hiatus for the last 15-20 years or so as life moved on a kids came. My son is now 12 and after some prying with the wife she finally agreed to let him get a snake. Well, yesterday I arrived home with his new 2yo dumerils boa!! He's calm and very well mannered but my wife's jaw hit the floor when she saw the size. I'm thinking she expected a 12 inch corn or king lol. My son's jaw hit the floor too as it was a surprise and I honestly have never seen him more excited in all my life!!

I tried posting a pic but I keep getting a message saying new posts are limited by the number of URL's they can contain even if I only put in one URL. I guess zero is my limit for now.

Ok, five posts it will be. I figured it was something like that but couldn't find it in the rules. Although, I am a guy so I can never find anything so I'm sure I missed it ;-)

The funnest part is watching him learn what's normal and not normal for a snake. Last night I was adjusting the setup and filling the water dish in the bathroom while my son was holding his boa (who from this point on shall be known as "goliath" lol). All of a sudden I head "whoa! whoa! whoa!" coming from the bedroom and a ran out. After asking what happened he said "he opened his mouth and I thought he was going to bite me". So I asked if he stuck at him and he said "no, he was just crawling away from me in the bed and stop and slowly opened his mouth really wide for a second". I started laughing and just explained to him he was just "yawning" which is technically not a yawn like ours but just to stretch out a bit after being woken up. The look on his eyes was priceless though!!

I was tossing around between the dumerils and Hog island as well and it was almost a tie but the lower humidity and the slightly calmer demeanor of the dumerils won out since it was for my son.

Welcome back! It's good to see young reptile enthusiasts. My daughter is 10 and has been keeping reptiles for a few years now. Coincidentally, we had our first escape this morning. My wife texted me to say they found Bert, one of my daughter's corn snakes on the other side of the room on top of another enclosure this morning, rather than in his tank. Anyway, congrats to you and your son!

I've had my share of escapes growing up. Found my yellow rat in the basement, my snow corn in the louvers of the closet door, my albino on the hand railing of the steps and a poor young lavender corn stuck to packing tape in the attic. Some peanut butter and a good bit of time and he was good to go.

Congrats on your son's new addition, very neat snake!, You just gotta love the places the little guys can get themselves into when escaping and exploring! i found my girl outside sitting ontop inside of the doors frame 3 hours later of gently prodding and i finally got her. :)

Happy is an understatement beth lol...I've never seen a bigger smile or more jumping around and yelling from him in all my life when I walked in with the boa around my neck. He was initially astonished with his size and then lost it when I told him it was his!! He still hasn't stopped talking about it.

Good looking snake. I'm not a huge boa guy, but if I were to get one again it would be a toss up between a high end BCC and one of those. Dums are sweet.
