View Full Version : Round out my collection

Hey girls and guys

I've really enjoyed holding a thin small snake while Banzai is just a noodle. Eventually he will grow up to be a big boy. So I'm looking for a snake to round off my collection. A big boa, medium BP and a ?. Considered hogs, a childrens python but would like other suggestions. Looking for a slim bodied snake. I've always liked the milk snake colours and how they mimic coral snakes. But I don't like the musking part. I'd rather get bitten then sprayed. Are milks really like that? Any other suggestions?

I have a exo terra human skull and want to see the snake slither out of it lol

I find that the Milk Snake calm down fairly quickly and stop musking after a month or so. I can't remember the last time I've been musked or even had one of mine attempt top bite me. If you want a thin bodied snake, I don't think you can get much thinner than one of the vine snakes. My issue with them is that many of them seem to only want to eat lizards and I like lizards too much to use them as a food item.

Pick the right milk snake and it's less likely to happen.

Hondurans and sinoloans I found to be less likely to musk. Those two are also the larger milk snakes. You could go back to the mexican black kingsnake.

I had a vine snake once. As cool as they are not ready to do that again. That one was on rodents and no source of feeder lizards near me. Maybe one day I'll try again with a vine.

It crossed my mind, males are hard to come by. Waited months with no luck.

King snakes are a lot of fun to keep. A Speckled King or MBK would be a nice addition.

Definitely go to the expo, theyre the best place to find snakes IME. One other option you might consider would be an Irian Jaya carpet python. They don't musk, are relatively thin-bodied, and pure IJ are one of the smallest locales for adult size.

Minkness
11-17-15, 02:08 AM
Hmmmm....I would approve of an IJ =D

He's looking for something that will stay under 4 feet and stay more like a noodle. If I remember correctly, somthing that can live it's life out in a 10 gallon or 20 gallon long tank.

Thus....HOGNOSE! Or a male garter snake....those neon calis are super nice....

Diurnal snakes tend to be fairly active in the enclosures.

trailblazer295
11-18-15, 10:47 AM
Ok good I thought kings were. Mink was trying to convince me kings were shy unlike Hogs. Biased information lol

Bandit
11-18-15, 10:53 AM
I find Kings to be fairly active. Unbiased opinion here - I think a king would be a good addition based on what you wanted. They don't get too big, generally pretty laid-back from the beginning, crazy feeding response, and are very handleable. At work, I love dealing with our Kings (currently only have 3). They are always a pleasure to deal with.

EL Ziggy
11-18-15, 10:53 AM
My Cal King is pretty active. My MBK is a bit shy.

Minkness
11-18-15, 11:13 AM
In my defence, I was not being biased at the time of that converaation, merely stating my personal experience with the 1 kingsnake I had for a year and almost NEVER saw. If that is more of an MBK trait, then I clearly had the wrong kind of kingsnake...

However ALL of my hoggies are out and about, lay out in the open, cruise their tanks or tubs alot, and seem alot more willing to be out and active with me than my kingsnake had been.

That may make me biased, but it is bias on personal expereince. =P

Bandit
11-18-15, 11:21 AM
In my opinion, you really can't go wrong with either. It just comes down to which one you want more because their overall level of care is about the same and they are both smaller snakes.

LOL your push for me getting a Hog is well documented. If you could everyone would have one.

Right now grey banded king tops my list. Small size, cool colours, good feeder.

Locating one would be the harder part.

I don't blame ya. I have nothing against hogs, but there are soooo many species I'd want before them. Not sure why, just personal preference I guess. I would've gone with the King too.

trailblazer295
11-18-15, 12:20 PM
Having a BP that goes" nah screw you not eating this week. I'm just going to look at it with interest" is enough. Don't really want 2 doing that. Rarely hear of a healthy king in a good cage that refuses.

reptiledude987
11-18-15, 12:27 PM
In minks defense my hoggie is my small food item garbage disposal. Shes a pig! But sounds like youre more inclined to go for a king so do what works for you.

trailblazer295
11-18-15, 12:30 PM
Some hogs are good feeders just like some BPs but some also aren't. Most of Minks hogs are good feeders. But kings are safer bet and I like the colours better.

reptiledude987
11-18-15, 12:45 PM
im feeling really tempted by a red milk of some sort. feel the need for some nice deep red! Ive got every other color even blue/purple with my file snake so I will probably be looking at some reds.

Minkness
11-18-15, 12:48 PM
I do agree on the colors. Some kings are suuuuuper pretty, and alot of hogs look the same in varying colors and as far as I know, only 3 pattern variations.

BUT HOGS ARE ADORABLE!!!

Minkness
11-18-15, 01:05 PM
Yes, and they aren't bad by any means. To me they actually look like a kingsnake pattern lol. But they aren't as easy to get a hold of and if I remember correctly they get bigger than a western. There are alot of other hognose speices out there, but westerns are the easiest to get and, depending on what you get and from who, theu are very affordable. My 1st male was only 40$ at a con while online even a normal male aas over 100$ plus shipping. The other hoggs I got as rescues so they don't really count lol.

I'd love to add a superconda to my collection (preferably female for the size) but they are still too expensive for me since I'm saving for that house. =)

They are not bigger, from what I remmeber they are smaller than western hoggies, but they are definitely more expensive.

I would recommend Russian Rats, but they are too big, so I would go for a king snake of some sort too! I like hoggies, but they are worse with eating than balls, and that's something, haha :D

Sylphie
11-18-15, 02:32 PM
Hmm, hard to tell as I never owned any north american rats other than corns... but I would say that they remind me Pituophis, especially when I read about prairiepanda pits. They are active all day, wander a lot in their cages, are calm and inquisitive, and are having monstorous feeding response. And they are really tough, can live in 70°F with no problems at all.
Ahh, and are really strong for a snake that size too! Pure muscles there :D

Ah I see. You're right, they do sound like pits...or maybe some muscled up versions of NA rat snakes.
