Super new to this forum, and I'm so glad I found it! My name is Amira, I'm 21, and I live in Los Angeles, CA. Here's my experience with snakes. When I was younger I used to be terrified of snakes. I thought that all snakes were "poisonous" and that if you came across one you were certain to die that day. When my dad and I were on hikes together he'd always tell me that when he was a little boy he used to kill any snake that he saw, and explained his hatred of snakes that didn't stem from fear but from something else I'm sure is partly backed by some religious notion.

After years and years of avoiding snakes at all costs out on hikes and such, I learned that a lot of snakes out in the mountains and woods were not always going to be venomous and that usually biting is their last resort and not an immediate instinct when seeing a human walk by a few yards away.

Then one day about 3 years ago out in Hollywood, my friends and I approached a guy with a friendly adult boa around his neck (https://www.instagram.com/p/UaNAHKCoDz2emmZC67re0KG-hNDEbjxcEcqYQ0/?taken-by=amirathequeen), and I've been fascinated ever since. I've handled snakes just a handful of times, but each time proved to me that they are amazing, lovable, and adorable creatures. When you look into their little eyes they just seem so innocent and kind and curious.

It's extremely hard to try convincing my parents (one of which is deathly afraid) that snakes aren't evil and savage animals and that they can be just as fun to own as a dog. I don't think they're getting there yet any time soon, but I'm still determined to raise and keep a snake soon and I'm excited to learn even more about them from you all!

Welcome! great to have you join. Would like to say that keeping a snake is not really comparable to having a dog, as in you can't (well shouldn't) take them for walks etc. And some do not mind, but none really care for being 'petted'. besides that they are amazing animals to keep, and i am impressed you got over your fear! Way to go!

You can't....(and shouldn't ever make blanket statements about any living creatures) .....

I fairly occasionally take my pet ratsnake for walks....and she loves it. She also enjoys a good chin rub...(as do my other two rat snakes) .

There's no doubt in my mind that she also thrives on meeting new people and any sort of attention short of torture by human interaction. (She doesn't know she's a snake!!!!)

Now....I carefully raised this snake from a baby....(and she was introduced to people early and often when young)....but goes to show there are exceptions to every rule.

Welcome Amira! Glad to hear you see a different side to these wonderful creatures.

Do you have an interest in any particular kind?

Welcome! Education is the strongest tool to use when you're trying to sway snake-haters away from their preconceptions. You might not ever get them to really like snakes, but if you do your research and teach them about these fascinating animals then eventually they're bound to come around and see that they really are just like any other animal. Although you mentioned religious roots; what religion does your family adhere to? That may present a special kind of obstacle. Any idea what kind of snake you want to get?

My dad is a SuperChristian lol. I feel like the whole "I'm turning you into a snake as a punishment" and "snakes are evil and dirty" thing in the bible shaped his view of them.
And since I've never had a snake, and I hear corns are perfect beginners, I'm thinking I'll get one of those lil guys. Amel reverse okeetee or aztec! :):):)

Welcome :) Glad to hear you overcame your fear, being a snake owner is a very rewarding experience which you will hopefully some day learn to be true :)
