This is to periodically show the progress of my prized Canebrakes enclosure.
It's bioactive, and grass seed is in the process of growing.

It's surprisingly easy. The work that's put into it makes keeping snakes a million times more enjoyable.

Once you get into enclosures like this, you never want to go back. The snake acts way more natural. It doesn't just eat. It hunts its prey just as it would in the wild.
It's like putting a human in prison compared to being out in the world. Totally different.

Thanks man. That's my boy. For some reason pictures don't show his true colors. He has a ton of pink and purple coloration.

I agree. The Canebreak and the enclosure both look great GA. He's got everything he needs to live the good life of a well kept snake. Nice job!

I'm open to suggestions to make this enclosure even better. Ideas anyone? I'm gonna utilize a small fan to get a nice breeze going in there on occasion. Since the enclosure is waterproof and made of oak, I'm installing a mister on a timer. Furthermore the lighting system is plant lights.
I'd like to find a reliable timer to set it like mid summer hrs of daylight and night.

I did a smilar thing for my leopard geckos, the change was insane, they actually act like a wild animal now instead of a little piece of sausage lol kudos for bioactive, when i get my next reptile i will definitely go bioactive! I put a tiny ground skink in their cage, he keeps the small critter population under control, i throw a dozen pinhead crickets into the cage every other week or so just to make sure he has enough to eat.

Oh, also for my light i used a All living things neodymium basking bulb, uva/uvb it was about $10 ansld it keeps their basking spot at about 120 for the winter i use a weaker light to stimulate a cooler environment. Only about 100 f at tge basking spot.

I'm using a Philips grow bulb and keeping it at the mid upper 70s

Low 80s sometimes...not crazy hot
David VB
10-27-15, 07:49 AM
Hmm, in mine it's low 80's to mid 80's but i think the main thing is i lach good lightning for growing grass... Just some led strips, 2 cool whites and 2 warm whites.

A regular Grow bulb/plant bulb from home depot or lowes works great. They are not expensive.

Eventually I'm gonna have to mow the lawn in the cage lol

10-27-15, 12:11 PM
Put some crickets or grasshoppers in to cut it for you ;) That's the way to go if you're doing bio-active!

10-27-15, 01:27 PM
I used the same grass, one thing i didnt like about it was they would trample it, and then it would lay flat like a carpet lol
Georgia
10-27-15, 04:48 PM
Yep it does lay flat if trampled lol

So when you mow your lawn in there are you going to leave the trimmings or remove them?
Georgia
10-28-15, 03:46 PM
Leave it to biodegrade
reptiledude987
10-28-15, 03:55 PM
thats what I figured. just let the nutrients go back into the soil.

Best way to do it
Hey, just saw your thread and pics. I'm thoroughly impressed with your setup and what a gorgeous rattler.
Do you basically just spot clean? What is your maintenance of the cage like?

I don't even spot clean. The cage cleans itself. Thanks for the compliments

Basically just water when needed and keep the light cycle on point. Pretty simple.
