View Full Version : Garters active during daylight hours?
How often do you all see your garter snakes in the daylight hours? Just wondering :)

Never :D But he's a tiny tiny hatchling so is afraid of everything...
I don't currently have Garters, but when I used to keep them they were out and about (or just basking) a good bit during the day.

It seems my garters are active day and night.

I see them in my yard patroling broad daylight but I also find them under carpet and boards hiding, too.

Normally they are diurnal and can be seen more during daylight hours. However , they have very acute eyesight and any movement, especially from above sends them ducking for cover. Haha.

Same here with my two. I can find either of them out at any hour of the day, day or night. I do offer a 12/12 light cycle, so I don't think it's their schedule being off. The eastern is out during the night a lot more than the albino checkered as well.

Any time, all the time. :)
My checkered is out a little LESS during the day now because he's in a busier spot and he's a spooky little bugger, but I catch him out basking often.
Thank you all. I was thinking...Just thinking mind you...about getting a snake that may be active in it's tank. I have a spare Exoterra tank lol. I wouldn't care if it didn't like to be held, this would be more of a display animal. If not a snake then something else.
I hate to see and empty enclosure just sitting around :)
Just pondering what I may put in it.
Oh the tank is an 18x18x24. I have had this tank for years. I already have the back ground foam on it. Still just setting there all alone and empty.

You could think about some rough green snakes, they are insectivores that do well in planted tanks and are also arborial.
It seems my garters are active day and night.

I have a male Valley and he is on the move constantly. Great eater too. A real low maintenance snake. Love him.
