Hi evereyone,

I've been to Snake Day in Houten today and had a great day.
Got to meet and conversate with Dr. Bryan Grieg Fry and Nigel Marven!
Yes, i also made some pictures that i'll share soon.

But i also got a new snake, a snake that i've been wanting for quite a while; the Naja melanoleuca or forest cobra.
I haven't got a name for her yet (CB 2014 female) but i'll come up with something soon!
Down below a picture of her, made by my friend Michiel Meesters.

Very nice specimen, and still is quite calm for a forest cobra..
I know that it won't always be like that, in fact i think this was my lucky day!
Can't wait to share more with you all.

She is beautiful. I love how they look when they are hooded up:) However, I don't think I could handle a venomous species like that.:/ Congrats on the new addition.

I think a nice name for her would be Splenda (those lips look especially sweetXD)

Thanks!
I'll also take that name in consideration, her lips do look sweet!
Only hope they never will make contact with my skin ;)

I love Forest Cobras. So much potency and unpredictability just makes them the ultimate hot. They are beautiful ontop of all that. Even if we were allowed to keep exotic venomous here in Arizona, I couldn't see myself being confident enough to keep one without at least 5 years of venomous experience. Definitely a top 2-3 snake in regards to skills needed to keep.

Awesome addition and great photo!

They can be more then a handful! Very smart snakes that can literally chase you around your room.. I've been wanting this snake for a while, but i've heard stories that made me think twice about it.
At the end if the day i still got her because they are just stunning snakes and i know that i'm able to keep them, and will work with her as safe as possible!
Thanks D!

I am fortunate that here in South Africa where I live, they are endemic.

I was called out on a capture about a year ago, and it was a stunning Forest Cobra of just on 1.8 metres, almost 6 foot.

Very intelligent snake and advanced on me 3 or 4 times before I got him pinned. They definitely go on an intimidation mindset when cornered.

Congrats on your purchase. Enjoy.

Amazing reptile! Looks really harmless at first glance. So I imagine they are mainly terrestrial? How are they at climbing?

Thanks! They are great climbers and good swimmers.. Like D said, it is a snake that is in the top 3 of most difficult hots to keep.. No, the care is not too hard but working with them is. Very potent venom, big venom yield, easily agitated and very unpredictable. Their venom contains cytotoxins (destroys tissue), postsynaptic neurotoxins and possibly cardiotoxins as well. Thereby, when it bites it injects a large quantity of venom.
It's definitely one of the most potent cobra venoms and it's the biggest true cobra (Naja) as well.
They have been known to chase keepers around the room, keepers even stated that they were more frightened of this snake then of any other snake in their collection including black mambas.
It's a beautiful snake that demands alot of resepect, which i do certainly have for her!

Good choice! One tip, don't start off with this one.
Naja kaouthia's are easier to handle, bluffers and are beautiful snakes! :D

A little update on my Naja melanoleuca, it's not in my collection anymore.
I sold it to a friend who also keeps venomous snakes, in order to expand my collection next year.
