Good temps for herping?

This weekend I'm going to be camping all weekend in a forested area in north texas. fall is definitely approaching and temps are in the 60-80 range. Would herps (mostly snakes) be out still? I knoe the area does have snakes, i have seen several there before. herping has definitely been slowing down for me in the past few weeks.

I would think the herping will still be good so long as the sun is out. If it's cooler during the night, start looking once the sun comes up. I'd assume a lot of snakes will be out catching that early morning sun.

Also if it is a bit cooler and there are open roads, try cruising once it gets dark. A lot of times snakes will like to get some of the warmth that's left on the pavement.

If you are going road cruising in Texas be sure to check the laws first. Pretty much illegal to road cruise at night in Texas. Can't take herps off the road in Texas under any conditions, only the shoulder. Here is the Texas Parks and Wildlife website. (http://tpwd.texas.gov/faq/huntwild/amphibian_reptile_stamp.phtml) When it starts to cool down cover that heats up quickly, such as tin, can be very productive, particularly in the morning so long as the sun is hitting it. Cover that retains heat, such as rocks, can be very productive in afternoon and in the early hours of the night.

Yeah i would try cruising but i dont have a car or a license yet, and yeah ive read the laws before. i wouldnt be removing them just taking pics and letting them go on their way. Ill probably just be flipping cover in the morning and evening.
