This is a Gopher Snake (Pituophis catenifer spp.). I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that this was found in southern California and is a San Diego Gopher Snake (Pituophis catenifer annectens). With a location I could confirm the subspecies. It is harmless, thanks for sharing.

Yeah it's a Gopher Snake. I would say San Diego, but I'm not positive on that.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to respond. Yes, this was found in San Diego right at my front door on the welcome mat! I literally stumbled across it :-) Imagine locking your front door and realizing that a hissing snake is attacking your leg. I guess it was looking for some shade or something. With your help and some online research, I think it might be whats called a pacific gopher snake. Apparently they sometimes mimic rattle snakes. Thanks a lot everyone for your help.

Well if it was found in San Diego it is definitely a San Diego Gopher Snake (Pituophis catenifer annectens). Pacific gopher snakes (P. c. catenifer) are found well north of you. Californiaherps.com (http://www.californiaherps.com/) in an excellent resource for all things herps in California, here is their range map for Pituophis.

San Diego gopher snake(annectens) 100%. The Pacific gopher snake has larger markings more like saddles and, as FWC noted, are found farther north. Cute little guy!

If you got bit, it would be important to wash the area but normally no other action would be necessary. They do so little mechanical damage that it would likely heal over in a couple of days anyway. Only time you might need treatment(an antibiotic ointment would probably do) is if the bite got infected. That is pretty rare, however, since the bite marks aren't deep.
