I use sand for my argus monitor lizard.

Sand, dirt, or a mixture of both is what most people use for their monitors.
The best substrate is a mix of topsoil, sand and some form of humus like coconut coir or sphagnum (60:30:10). This should be nice and deep (a couple feet ideally) so that in the event they decide to burrow there is enough soil to do so. This will also help you maintain a good consistent humidity for them.
