I have a black light bulb from a haunted house my parents did for Halloween a few years back and I was wondering if I can use it for night time veiwing if I hook it up to a dimmer and keep it on a low setting during night. Your thoughts?

Seems like a plan. Looking forward to ither answers so I know for sure too!

I just keep a dim light on and watch all my night critters get active lol. This includes the cresties as well as Moko....Amara is unusually active during the day and I don't catch her out too often at night. -shrugs-

It would be awesome since Glitch likes to play green light red light with me. When I look at her, she freezes and when I walk away, she is gone":/

I use them during winter days, and yes, I can see a little more activity in my snakes. Depending on the brand (and sometimes the shape) it gives you different purple tones.

Snakes can see in the UV range so black lights, and even the red and blue lights that are sold by pet stores for night heat may bother the snakes.

I stopped using the red lights when I realized my critters would never really rest.. it was like 24/hour daylight to them.
Plus when theyre up n about I should be sleeping anyway

I was going to say that as well. I would skip the night light OP

So what's the best option for night viewing our snakes? I currently use a low watt infrared bulb for night viewing and for supplemental heat in the colder months. I've never noticed my snakes being restless or agitated but I'm definitely open to better options.

Honestly? Nothing. If you need more heat try a CHE

I only want something for short term veiwing. The extra light will be turned off when I'm done watching her. I just wanted something that I can see her without her seeing me so she is more comfortable while I'm watching her. I'm not going for the heat at all, just veiwing for short periods. That's all":/

There's no harm in having it on for a minute or so just nir ALL night

I understand:) I would not feel completely safe with anything that puts off heat not on a thermostat. And I don't like lights on when I'm sleeping. I can barely tolerate my digital alarm clock lol let alone a lit up snake enclosure. XD

I have a 25w red incadescant bulb in a pole lamp I used to use for night viewing the 55. I didn't actually shine it directly into the tank, partially reflected off the wall behind, but it worked well enough.

The snake can still see that. It doesn't matter, it's still going to bother then.

Help me to understand exactly how it bothers them. I've used infrared bulbs for years without any noticeable issues. The snakes don't seem restless or agitated. They're all active and eating, shedding, and growing normally. What harm do these bulbs supposedly cause?

I don't think they necessarily cause direct harm, it just might keep some nocturnal snakes from coming out at night.

I personally think a one way glass enclosure would be neat. But I'm not sure how well it would work, and it would probably still interfere with their day/night schedule.

The red light didn't seem to bother them. They weren't particularly active when the overhead lights were on, but didn't seem to mind the dimmer red lighting.
