This is my pick up from the Atlanta show. While I was looking around, it was a tie between her and a snow at the same booth, but she was female and the snow was male so she won out. She's also poss het anery so if she proves out I can make my own snows. I'll be touching base with the breeder tomorrow (or later today whichever you prefer) to get birth/feeding records and I'll double check to see which strain she is then.
You can see the snows I was checking out right behind her in this picture.

Eh, I'm not a huge fan of ghosts. I'm hoping to prove her out and hit snows and moonglows in the future. Even if she doesn't prove out, I still have lots of other things I can work with, or she can be an exceptionally pretty pet. :)

So I've been debating on naming her Nymeria, but I've already used one GoT reference so I've been trying to find another one to use, but I'm having a hard time. I may just go with it at this point. haha
She's taken her first meal successfully and is closing on her second meal soon. She's being fed small hopper mice every 10 days.
Since this weekend, she's begun exploring her tub and using her hot side since I bumped her temps up. She especially seems to enjoy her vine, as I see her in it a lot while she's out and about. In the few handling sessions I've had with her, she's been very docile and is very tolerant of me touching her head.
If she takes this next meal as easily as her first, I'll begin handling her regularly.
A picture I missed from the day I got her.

Thanks! Yes, it's unfortunate if you're not able to care for a snake of their size. They are pretty heavy relative to their size, they're pure muscle. I have an adult male BCI that's decent-sized for a male so I pretty much know what I'm getting into luckily.
Might I suggest looking into some of the smaller boa constrictor locales? There are many that will stay under 6', and if you get a male they'd stick around the 3'-4' range. Things like Nicaraguan BCI, Pearl Island, Crawl Cay, etc. Peruvian long-tailed boas (Boa constrictor longicauda) are another subspecies that, although they can potentially get 7', they're not nearly as heavy-bodied as a BCI. I think there's an owner of a pair of BCL that say their longis are half the weight of their BCI of the same length.
WOW! cant imagine how she will look like when bigger with those colors! amazing!
She will definitely be a stunner! This girl was actually meant to be a hold back, but the breeder ended up needing to make room for another snake he got to fit into a project of his, so I was able to end up with this beautiful girl! Now, hopefully I'll have a few projects with her in future. lol

She's taken her second meal successfully, and it's been 2 days now, so it may be about time to start getting her out! No pics right now but I'll try to get some on my days off. The only snakes not currently sitting on a fresh meal are Cloud and Bud, who's still throwing a tantrum over his rats. And Sanji maybe.

Thanks! I'm hoping she'll hold onto her colors nicely, most of the adult sunglows I've seen pictures of have held their patterns nicely but a lot have yellowed/oranged out as well. It's going to be a long wait to see how she turns out! haha
She's taken her third meal without hesitation as well, so I think it's safe to say she's 100% settled in!
Here she is hanging out on her magnetic vine.

So I measured her on SerpWidgets and according to the website she's grown 4"...I then stretched her out and that appears to be true. I couldn't get her 100% stretched out next to the measuring tape, but both her head and an inch or two of her tail wrap around my 5 or 10 gallon tank, which is 20" long. Haven't weighed her again, but I would not be surprised if she's already exceeded 100 grams now.

More pics! Gonna weigh her in a few days.
Doesn't look it in this pic too much, but she's getting a wide back end that splays out like she's full of poo, so I may spread her feedings out by a few days. She's growing rather rapidly so I paired with a decrease in muscle tone it shouldn't be too bad, but I'm still debating on it.

Nothing much new on this girl, but boy is she growing like a weed!!! I need to weigh her once she's empty from today's meal. Still eating a hopper every 10-14 days, and showing no signs of slowing down on her growth.

Well she weighed in at 136 grams before her last meal, she had a gigantic poop the day before the meal before that (so 2 meals ago). She has a bad habit of holding onto poo for 2-3 feedings (she eats every 10-14 days) and then pooping a pile that could almost put River to shame! lol
She's still holding onto that color really nicely, and continues to grow noticeably.
She's still on hoppers, but I may move her to adult mice at the same time as Sanji, since the hoppers aren't really leaving a bulge anymore. I'll give her once of Sanji's adults and see what kind of bulge it leaves before deciding on whether or not to keep her on hoppers a bit longer.

The only weird thing with her is she's only shed once in the 5 months I've had her, despite growing at least 5" since her last shed. I've only been feeding her biweekly a month or two, so I would have expected her to have shed at least one other time if it was the feeding schedule causing it. I'm half-expecting her to shed in the next few weeks and explode another 5"-6" like River. haha
She's pooping and eating fine and doesn't look dehydrated, so I'm not too worried, just seems strange.

Nymeria's feeding day last week was rather interesting.
I had taken her out of her tub so I could replace her paper towels as she had taken a big dump on them, and then placed her near her vine after I was done so she'd crawl off my hand since she wouldn't let go of my fingers. She then would not be removed from her vine, so I offered her mouse to her there.
She ended up sitting there with the mouse in her mouth not moving at all with big dilated pupils.

When I went to put the lid back on her tub I heard a rapid "thwuck thwuck thwuck." I looked down to find she had struck at the air with the mouse still in her mouth and was now violently thrashing around trying to wrap around the mouse. >.>
She ended up succeeding but has further convinced me she's weird.

So I finally managed to get her to stretch out, she climbed on top of the trimming on the floor and just crawled along it. She came to just a hair under 26", maybe a millimeter or two under. That means she's grown 2" since I measured her in November, and she's grown 6" since I got her in July. She's growing rather fast considering Cloud was only 2'7" after I had him a year.

Beautiful boa and sounds like she may be a big girl. Stunning colours.
I'm secretly hoping that Rachel will be on the larger side - closer to 7' instead of 6' would be perfect (she's a CA BCI so likely to remain at the smaller end of a BCI's range).

I'm hoping she will! I'll grow her nice and slow, though, so I'm not expecting her to get above 6' until she's 5+ years old, if she ends up getting bigger than that. She's growing fast, but a fast growth rate doesn't always mean a snake will get big.
As you said, she'll remain smaller. I really wouldn't expect her get much over 6', if she even reaches 6'. Different Central American localities get to different sizes, but they generally stay in the 3'-5' range, so it depends on what localit(ies) she is. If she has some Colombian blood in her, she may easily reach 6', but I wouldn't necessarily expect 7'. Even Colombians don't always reach 7', although it's much more in the realm of possibilities than the other Central American boas.

I think that's the key with boas. Nice steady growth. So easy to overfeed as they can't seem to turn food down!
Rachel is fed every eighth day on a good small mouse and shes doing well at that (she's only 6 months old).
Of course when she's matured I'll drop to every 10-14 days...

Oh yeah, that's the nice thing about them for sure.
I'd go with 10-14 days when she turns a year, and then when she turns 3 you can feed anywhere from every 3-6 weeks. Adult boa constrictors have insanely slow metabolisms, and feeding an adult anymore often than every 3 weeks can put your boa at risk of fatty liver disease and obesity. I'm currently feeding my 4.5 year old every 5 weeks, and he gets fasted 90 days out of the year. I'm thinking of eventually bringing him down to a 6 week schedule when he seems ready, and that will be as far spaced as he'll go.

Thanks BSG. Hadn't realised their metabolism was that slow. I knew they were easily overfed and I've seen some very obese looking specimens on YouTube so will bear that in mind.

Unfortunately, obesity is a very common problem across all snake species in captivity, and probably all pets. Some people seem to think the more food the better, as I've seen people feed as much food as 3 jumbos a week or every other week to their 6'-7' boa when all that snake needs is one large rat every 3-6 weeks. Even if you're breeding a female, she doesn't need all that much more food, all they need is maybe a slight increase in food intake such as spacing the feedings closer together or slightly larger food items. I've seen breeders consistently successfully breeding females with similar body tone to my adult male boa.

My mom bought a Nikon D3200 because she wanted a DSLR for her own uses as well, and I was taking some test shots with it. So far, everything is from the auto setting while I start testing out the manual stuff, but although it has some troubles with certain colors (namely Sanji's color tbqh), it's actually letting Nymeria shine! You can see her pink sides so well now. :D
For now, this is what I will be using but next month I'll be buying a Canon Rebel that will become my regular camera.
It's too bad these cameras aren't one-handed, I'll miss the ease of my PowerShot.

This looks alot like my coral sunglow. Is that what she is?
She wasn't sold to me as a coral, just a regular sunglow, no Lipstick line or anything else either. Iirc, one of her siblings (maybe half siblings, but I think he was a full sibling from a previous litter) turned out rather corally, but I don't think she's from the Coral line specifically.
She still hasn't shed, so she's not really going through any color changes, but I've been thinking of bumping her food size now that she's right around 140 grams. I'm getting adult mice for Sanji, and I'll be testing one out with her to see how she takes it before I decide 100% if I'm going to bump her, and that might spark a shed.
Her whole body looked pinkish today, even her reddish-orange saddles/tail were more like a pinkish-orange, like she was maybe starting a shed, but I don't think it's likely. She didn't look like she did in those pre-shed photos I took. I'll keep an eye on her, but I don't think I'll see a shed for a bit longer. It's a lot false alarms with these albino snakes. haha
Even if she was a Coral, they often don't start showing their coralling until they're 1-1.5 years old, so it will be awhile before I could say how she'll turn out.
Here are some more photos, today got above 70F, so I took some outdoor photos of Nymeria. I didn't get to anyone else because the camera got hot taking photos of Draco and Demigod indoors (all of Demi's photos were bust but some of Draco's were good), and the light has faded, but I might get some more chances later. Spring is just around the corner so in another month it might even be warm enough.

Well I tested Nymeria out on the adult mice, and I think she's ready to make the move, too! Sanji just got bumped, so I was testing out one of his mice with her. I gave her the very smallest adult mouse I had to test the waters, and it left just a small bulge, so I'll give her a slightly bigger one next time.
You can't see the bulge too well here, because by the time the shutter closed the bulge had gone past the hide. You can see it in the reflection, but it's slightly distorted because plastic. I didn't want to bother her too much and risk a regurge, so this is the best photo I got, but it's still small even for a conservative meal so she'll get a bigger one since she handled this one so easily.

I don't really know, she could be anywhere from 4'-8' most likely. I didn't ask the size of her parents because I wasn't too worried about her adult size. It will be about 6 years before I find that out. haha Boas take a long time to get to their adult size. Still, she should reach a decent size by the time she turns 4.

She looks good but I would just start feeding her rat pups. She will grow quicker and shed more often for you then. Mice don’t don’t have enough nutrients that a baby boa needs to start growing. All you are doing is giving her enough to get by between feeding. Baby boas can eat big prey than you think. I feed all my baby boas one fuzzy rat or a rat pup every 10 to 14 days.
Take care

I know they can, but that doesn't mean they should have them regularly. I don't have any rats smaller than mediums right now, so she'll have to stick to mice for now. If she still doesn't shed within the next couple of meals, I'll consider buying some rat pups or fuzzies, but I think they're going to be too big for regular meals for her, they're twice the size of these adult mice.
Also, she's growing just fine, but she isn't shedding. She's grown several inches since her last shed (2" that I measured but she's gotten bigger since then), so it's not a matter of bad growth but strangely absent shed cycles.

Nymeria's colors continue to fade more and more, she didn't appear her regular level of red/orange/pink as usual today, and her scales were more noticeable than her patterns and colors, if that makes any sense? Like, her colors are so pale the shapes of her scales stand out more. So, none of the photos I took today ended up good at all, but I'll include this one to show her size. :/
I got her out earlier to measure her length, and she's just a tad over 27", not quite 27.5", and she weighed in at 174 grams. So she's growing. I'm thinking I didn't move her up a size quick enough, more than it being because they're mice. She did grow 4" in 2 months on mouse hoppers, after all. I'll still give her a bit more time and see if she needs to be moved onto the bigger rat pups, I know she could take fuzzies easily, but I'm a bit doubtful about rat pups.

Good news! It turns out her faded colors were actually the start of her shed cycle! I was hesitant to say so, because it's hard to tell, but sunglows seem a bit easier because of their bright colors. Today I took her out and she's definitely in shed! She's not quite in her blue phase, but it shouldn't be long before her eyes cloud over. :) They're still clear, but the rest of her is murky.
Also, it turns out my last measurement of her was wrong. I had her out and let her hang out next to Cloud's enclosure while I dampened her EcoEarth, and she was stretched out completely straight. She's actually a hair under 28", not a hair over 27".

She's currently in Bud's old tub, and was being heated by the heat lamp I was using with him while I waited for the heat tape to arrive. It got here Friday, but I just now got a chance to check the mail.
I've got the heat lamp on a thermostat, so I may continue with it. I've been wanting to see if I get any difference in growth and digestion from ambient heat, and she won't be big enough for her own T12 for at least a year or two, so I may keep her in this set up for a few months and see if I notice any difference. Both her meals were eaten on heat tape, and took 3-4 days for the bulge to dissipate and I have yet to see any feces. Since she's getting ready shed, and I don't feed during sheds, this will give her time to defecate. Then we'll see if I notice more frequent poops, and if the bulge dissipates faster in this set up. I feel like she just had a hard time digesting on the heat tape despite an 80-85F room temp and 95F surface temp. She only pooped once every 2 months and it took 3 days for even a slight bulge to dissipate.

Well Nymeria shed today! I came in and saw her perched on top of her magnetic vine, but her skin was nowhere in sight. I lifted up the hide she's been using since her shed cycle began, and it fell out of it. lol Then, I found a gigantic turd pile off to the left. There were three turds, each one regular turd size for a snake her size. She pooped only a couple weeks ago, but she must have been holding in the rest. She weighed 155 grams, and her last weight before that was 174, so a pretty decent sized poop.

Once she was weighed and everything, I went ahead and gave her a mouse. She completely missed her food in her frenzy, and fell right off the vine. She struck the air with her mouth wide open when she hit the ground, and finally got it once I brought it back by her head again.

Beautiful, very pink!
Her colors have faded a lot since she shed unfortunately (not that they were bright then). Her head and neck have gone back to being paper-white rather than off-white, but her sides are now only a light pink with green scales splotched throughout her sides. Her saddles and tail are a deeper red-orange, but her usually red sides quite light. Still, she's only 9 months, almost 10, so she could still change dramatically, especially with only 2 sheds under her belt with me.
I got a chance to take her outside, all the warm days are on the day I work. Go figure. I'm hoping today will be warm since I've got the day off.

Her last meal was one of my weanling mice. They're roughly about the same weight as the small adult mice, but smaller. So I gave her one of the bigger small adult mice from the main bag this time.
It seems like she must have gotten the head folded over somehow, because she had a strange bulge in her neck swallowing it down.

Well Nymeria seems to be pooping at about the same rate, even with the ambient heat. She pooped either this morning or afternoon, after holding in the last 3 or 4 meals. She laid a giant crap, as you can see. I think what I'm going to do is space out her feedings to 14 days again (maybe 14-16 days), and the next few meals wait until she poops before feeding her again, and hopefully that will get her pooping normally and I'll go to a set 14 day schedule. I haven't weighed her yet, but I'll do it before I feed her again.

She's nearly a year anyways, so it's about time to move her to bi-weekly.
She's one of only two snakes I've got that hoards her poop, and the only one who's gone more than 3 months without shedding. The other one being my ball python Bud, who poops about as often but takes slightly smaller poops relative to size than her.
Cloud has always pooped within a week of eating when he was younger, and poops 2 weeks after each meal now as an adult. :/
Thanks! She's still a bit small, but as of the last time I measured her, she's only 3" short of where Cloud was after I had him a year. She's also a bit girthier than he was then and doesn't look so lanky. Assuming he was 1-2 months when I got him, she's still got 2-4 months to catch up to him. She seems to be about the same size as a ghost female I'm currently paying on, who's just a week or two younger than her, so she's not behind in growth.

I had her in the bucket so I could dampen her bedding, but she really hates the bucket, and started zig-zagging and climbing the walls immediately after I put her in it. Since she behaved, I allowed her to sit on top of it, though. She just sat there nice and calm until I was done. It did still have some water left in the bottom from wetting River and Bud's bedding, so that may have made her uncomfortable, too.

Well I went ahead and tried her on a jumbo mouse since the small adults aren't leaving much of a bulge anymore. The bulge is a little bigger than I'm comfortable with, but it's not so big I think it will hurt her if I just stagger a small adult mouse in every other feeding. Once she's on just jumbos, I'll be ordering some weaned rats, since they're slightly bigger in overall size but are a close equivalent.
Wrapping the mouse:

She also appears to be going into shed again judging off the feeding pictures, but I've had a lot of false positives in the past, so I decided while it's uncertain that she's shedding regularly I'll just go ahead and feed her unless she's in blue. If she is going into shed, then I'm glad she's back on track!

They don't get any bigger than any other boa constrictor, morph doesn't determine size. I didn't ask about her parents' size since I'm not too worried about that, but I expect her to be at least 6'-7', maybe 8'. I don't consider that range to be overly-large, an 8' boa would be a decently large size, but 6'-7' isn't too bad at all.

Nymeria shed the other day, and she's starting to show some coralling! She was not sold to me as a coral line animal, but from what I've seen non-line sunglows will get that coral pattern from time to time as well. Comparing with some older photos, her colors are a lot brighter, too. Hopefully she'll be a nice bright adult!
Her measurements came out to 30" and 233 grams. I didn't see any poop, so she's probably right around 200-210 grams empty.
Here she is from earlier in the week, before shedding.

She was a lot easier to work with outside this time. Usually, once I put her on the ground and try to pick her up, she starts flopping around like a fish out of water (I have a video somewhere....). But this time, she was quite calm whenever I picked her back up. Still sorta tried to crawl out of my hands, but no more flopping or desperately trying to crawl away. She even sat on my hand, surveying the scene around her for several minutes. haha

Those are Roswell's, they're going to really expensive for sure! I've been trying to decide whether I want to add RLTs het albino/anery or if I want to get some IMGs....
And Albert's right, Roswells/RLTs are becoming super popular due to their awesome striped super form. They're one of the few morphs to have originated from Boa constrictor (formerly BCC).

Nymeria officialy hit 3', at 13 months old! She's finally on rats, and has taken her first weaned rat, she's going to take her second in a few days if she doesn't show any more signs of shedding. She looks to be going into shed, but it's hard to tell at this point. Her sides aren't bubblegum pink like they have been, they're dulled out, and in the flash photos she's looking a bit milky. I think I may have given her a really small weaned rat last time, as this one left a rather large bulge, even bigger than Tirel's bulge on small rats. I did pick the first one out because it was smaller than the others, but I guess it was smaller than I thought because it only left a small bulge. lol I'm going to give her an extra week and put her back on jumbo mice for awhile I think, since regular-sized weaned rats are a tad large. I'm thinking when she's around 350-400 grams, move her up, since Tirel was 400 grams when she arrived and weaned rats are perfect for her (she's now almost 500 grams and they still work).

Nymeria took a big poop, so I weighed her and she came in at 302 grams. :D Unfortunately, she doesn't appear to have gained any length, but she was being a wriggly mess so it's hard to tell.
I took her outside to expel some energy, and hoped the shade would help catch her colors, but it didn't. :/ Her colors haven't changed much from the last shed, but she is turning really yellow rather than the off-white color (which is still remaining at her neck and head).

09-11-16, 12:07 AM
lol I think people who say "I only love wild types, I'll never own a morph!" Are all stubborn, there's nothing inherently wrong with morphs. Invariably, they all find a morph they say "WOW" to, but then in the same breath are like "too bad I'll never own one since it's a morph." A nice-looking snake is a nice looking snake. lol I like wild types, too, but if I like a snake I'm not gonna pull the "but..." card.
So, give in danny, get you a morph you like. :P
Even if Nymeria doesn't get any crazy colors, she's keeping her colors nicely thus far, so hopefully she won't be a faded adult, and hopefully she'll make some nice holdbacks.

Oh I do like the odd morph. A lot of them really don't do it for me but the odd one I find really pretty.
I guess though as my collection will be modest I have to set parameters somehow so on that basis I am sticking to my guns as there are plenty of wild types I want before I even think about a morph or two.
My other fear (perhaps unfounded) is that wild types will disappear from the pet trade altogether as more and more people chase evermore obscure morphs and that would be a real shame.
Tsubaki
09-11-16, 04:49 AM
The one benefit of wild types becoming less popular for the pet trade, is that wild caught animals will also be a lot less interesting. But i agree mostly, that is why i bred locality retics and boas before. :D
dannybgoode
09-11-16, 07:53 AM
And of course at the moment CB wild types are so cheap! Ok there is the downside that people see them as a disposable pet but for the serious collector it's a massive plus :)

Most morph pairings will produce normals. With boas, a lot of the super forms have had questionable reproductive rates, so I don't think there's a danger of breeding many supers in boas at least. Super hypos are fine afaik, but super jungles don't seem very reliable, and super motleys don't live long enough to breed. Not too sure on the other supers (keltics, RLTs, etc. as I believe the supers are just now being produced and attempted to be bred).
Boas also have a wider variety of things you can do with wild types than a lot of other species. I have seen some linebred normal boas that you would swear up and down were morphs, but they aren't even hets for anything. Mostly in the various pastel lines, which can affect both pattern and color.

She's a nice thick girl, I think she may even have more girth than Tirel. And that's with her considerably more conservative feeding from a much younger age. Even though she's significantly shorter than Tirel atm, I'm thinking with her girth she may either eventually be a long adult or a nice stout girl. Either way she may have the size to give me some decent litters.
She's definitely progressing nicely. Colors are bright and crisp.

Thanks! I'm kinda sad her coralling didn't get better, though. It's barely noticeable anymore. Looks more like a solid reddish blushing now except on her neck. At 16 months old I'm hoping she'll stay nice and contrasted! I'm sure she'll continue to lose some of it, but it would be nice if her saddles and tail didn't fade out.

Very pretty. Funny how they suddenly grow and then do nothing for 6 months and grow again (or at least appear to). Auntie Rachel is suddenly looking like a proper boa having suddenly got some girth to her (don't worry-still nice and square! In fact I've took her out to 3 week feedings and that seems to be a catalyst!).

Well Nymeria has yet to grow any in length, she's been 3' even for about 4 months now, about as long as she's been on jumbo mice. I recently put her on weaned rats the feeding before last, and she appears to have grown slightly but I haven't officially measured her so I'm just going to say she's 3' even for now. She has continued to gain weight, but without significant length growth there's been no sheds. She was 418 last I weighed her iirc, I didn't record it because she still had a weaned rat in her but once she defecates I'll re-weigh her.
She's doing quite well on the monthly feedings so far, and should go back to 14 days sometime in January or February, and then once she turns 2 years in June I'll move her onto 3 weeks.
I had her out the day before, and she's looking more and more like a proper boa. :)

It will definitely depend. She's always had more girth than my males have had, but Tirel is female and doesn't have her girth (yet at least). There's plenty of slender girls, so you'll just have to see how she turns out as she gets decent size. I'd say by 5'-6' you'll be able to accurately gauge if she'll put on decent girth. Girth is only good if it's all muscle, so never "bulk up" your females, even if you plan on breeding. They should come to a good weight naturally on their terms. Muscle foundation and age play the biggest factors in female boa fertility. A lean female can have a perfectly healthy, decent/average sized litter, but an overweight one will slug out or have otherwise small litters (too young of a female does this too), give birth prematurely, or even die while gravid.
Nymeria got this girth being fed small meals 14 days for most of her life, and being fed monthly since October, so it really does not take much food whatsoever to keep a boa at a healthy weight. Even a baby.

Don't worry my little girl only gets fed fortnightly as I would rather slow grow her she's 1 in February and still on small mice but for the size of her that's adequate for now,I feel like they put so much more growth on between 1st and 2nd yr like my motley did

Cloud definitely grew the most during his second year, but I was overfeeding him. Went from 2'7" at 1 year to 5'2" at 2 years, he was being fed rat fuzzies/pups every 5 days during first year, year and a half. I was raising my rats so basically I'd give them to him as soon as they got a full coat of fur or once they opened their eyes as he got bigger, etc.
Tirel might get a few inches over 4' by 2 years, but I don't think Nymeria will even reach 4' by her second year. They'll both be 1.5 in December. Both of my girls have been growing quite steadily throughout the entire time I've had them. Crona is still young but so far his growth is close to Nymeria's, only slightly behind. He'll be 10 months in a few days, and he's 27" last I measured him, still eating mouse hoppers, I bumped Nymeria to small adult mice at 10 months and then she was on weaned rats before she reached 1.5 years.
bigsnakegirl785
12-12-16, 12:23 AM
Nymeria still refuses to shed, I think she's going to pull another 6 month period of no shedding. I still need to pull her out and see if she's grown any, I just keep hoping she's getting ready to shed so I've been leaving her alone. :/

Thanks everyone, I measured her again a week or two ago and she came in at 3'1" so she has grown finally. Not much, but not bad considering she didn't even grow that much eating a jumbo mouse every 2 weeks for several months, and then a couple feedings on weaned rats spaced out by a month and she grew some.
She'll be getting her next meal spaced out by a month again and then after that her usual 2 week schedule will begin again before I put her on a 3 week schedule when she turns 2 in June.
bigsnakegirl785
01-25-17, 06:46 PM
I weighed her this morning when I fed her, and she came in at 422 grams. This was her last monthly feeding, so her next rat will be in 2 weeks.
I borrowed my mom's Nikon to try to get better flash photos, and it definitely picked up a lot less red making more of the colors true to life.

Beautiful! Did she shed yet?
Nope. :/ The common theme here seems to be 4" = a new shed cycle. She's only grown one inch. If I had known she wasn't going to grow on jumbo mice I would have went ahead and put her on weaned rats. lol Good news is she immediately went back to growing in length on weaned rats, even with only 2 or 3 meals in her. Now that she's going back to eating every 2 weeks maybe I'll see even more growth.
She's still chunky as ever, as you can see (part of that chunk is from a recent meal but still).

Yeah it is strange, been almost 8 months now. Unless I forgot to record a shed cycle or something...she has grown 7"-8" and closing in on 200 grams since the last recorded shed cycle I have...
She put on a lot of weight on the jumbos so I expected her to have grown in length, but nope. Not even a quarter inch in like 4 months, then I switched her to weaned rats and bam an entire inch almost overnight.

I'm sure you're relieved!

I am. She's been shedding pretty consistently since her second shed with me, which also took a long time, but not as long as this time. So it was odd for her to go so long without shedding. Especially after growing so much. :/
She's currently on EcoEarth.
bigsnakegirl785
02-14-17, 08:04 PM
So she's still very much blue, but I think I see some color popping underneath! I'm hoping this shed cycle will be one of the color enhancing sheds rather than the color de-enhancing ones. Sometimes she sheds and she gets more colorful, sometimes she sheds and she gets less colorful.
I want to buy her some RBI hides, since Crona could use them after she's done, but I'm not sure what size to get her. I also need to order some more XL/jumbo hides for the bigger snakes.

Nymeria has gotten an upgrade in her hides, I ordered a few medium hides from LLL last month and ditched the tiny cottage cheese containers she's had for like 1.5 years. lol They're very large on her, but she'll grow into them soon enough.
Her last weight was 422 grams, and she has visibly grown since the last photos I took of her in my hand. She's also starting to lose her "baby face." :D

I took some photos of her in the sunlight filtered through the plastic over the windows (and with the sun at an angle so it wasn't shining full blast in the snake room), and these photos show her off a bit better. I'll be so glad when I can take her outside into the shade again, it should make her colors pop even more. :)
She's starting to make weaned rats look small, but she's got a long way to go yet before I'll feel comfortable putting her on smalls. I think she'll actually make it onto smalls by the time she turns 2, though. I didn't think she would at first, but she's truly growing on her weaned rats vs the jumbo mice. Yesterday's feeding was the first one on weaned rats that was spaced out by 3 weeks, the rest were 4 weeks. It would have been 2 weeks, but I was basically constantly asleep the entire week I was supposed to feed her. I think I've figured out a rhythm now, though.

lol If that's anything like the video where the kid is carried off, it's fake. Afaik a hawk would not be able to physically fly off like that with a dog. They can't even fly off with a rabbit that's probably less than half that weight. They can sort of hop around carrying it, but that's about it.

Hmm..at 3-6lbs for a small dog/cat it IS possible they could, depending on the size of the bird, but not very far. Even then, if it didn't fly off, they will sometimes ride the prey, so-to-speak, letting the talons do their work.
This is of course purely hypothetical given a hungry bird, a prey animal of the right dimensions, etc.

Well, 3-6 lbs is already heavier than the average hawk. A large eagle *might* be able to fly off with it, but they're not as common and I've never seen one around here. It would be a lot more likely that they'd land on the animal, killing it, and grip in a claw to hop/carry it somewhere else, but couldn't take off. I assume that's what you're referring to when you say "riding the prey."
Plus, I keep within arm's reach of my snakes, so most predators are not going to be inclined to go anywhere near them unless they were unusually comfortable with humans. Snakes move slowly, but can still easily become lost if you walk away, even without a bird or other predator involved.

Nymeria continues to grow. I need to get a length on her soon, but the new scale I got says she's 1 lb 3.1 ounces which is apparently 541 grams. She still has a weaned rat in her, though, so she's probably closer to 500 grams.
She had her hide flipped over, and her tail all splayed out. I picked her up and she sucked it in, though. lol I guess she was flattening it out to increase surface area for digestion? >.>
