I can not tell from the photo, but if it is a cottonmouth that is a thick sucker.

Definitely a cotton mouth. Best left alone and will leave you alone. People are more likely to get bit when trying to kill the snake because like humans, it will to defend itself. There's a really great active group on Facebook called Snake Identification where anyone can post to ask about a snake if you want to check it out.

Soooo....I'm from FL and have a dumb story....

Had a friend with an older brother when I was in middle school. Brother liked snakes and caught what he thought was a garter snake and kept it for a while. When I would go over to their house I would handle his BP and this 'garter snake'. Took a pic of it and posted it on a site...turned out it was a cotton mouth >_>

The ideocy of kids....but truely, that was a pretty laid back snake. Never even hissed or got too squirmy, and obviously never bit anyone. When their grandma found out what it really was, she about had a heart attack and made him let it go. We were all kinda sad lol

Holy crap, do you still have this photo?
I've yet to encounter an "aggressive" cotton mouth. A lot of the time they will open their mouths and stay still like this one below that I came across on the road. He stayed like that for a good while before slithering away.

Well crap it will not let me post the photo right now. It does this all the time. It will load the photo and I press close this window and then I just get a blank page and have to go back.

Man that is frightening and cute all at the same time. I am glad no one got hurt including the snake.

Yea, how can I get the larger images to show here?

Our Great Danes were near by and I rounded them up and brought them inside the house quick.

I don't think you want to cuddle up with him on the couch.

Still a cottonmouth.

They get a bad rap, but just don't step on them and you'll be fine.

Yup, cottonmouth. Like eminart said, just give them space and they won't bother you.
