Hi everyone, I could use some insight into a rather strange situation that has come up with Shesha. I was holding him this evening and while brushing his eco earth bedding off his belly I noticed what looks like either a hair or a piece of coco fiber stuck to his vent. I first tried to pull it off of him thinking it was just something he had picked up off the couch but it is actually stuck in his vent. I can only assume it is somewhat long since it isn't budging. If he did swallow a hair how on earth did it make it all the way to his vent undigested? Is it possibly a piece of eco earth wrapped around his spur? There is about 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch visible and the rest is up somewhere under his anal scale. I felt along his belly and he has no lumps or evidence of impaction. Is this a wait it out situation? Anything to be concerned about? http://ball-pythons.net/forums/images/smilies/confused.png

I'd suspect it may just be a rodent hair from a feeder that's somehow gotten stuck there. Grab it with tweezers and pull it out? It may come out along with the next poop, but in any case I wouldn't worry unless some sign of infection starts to develop. Snakes don't actually digest fur, though it usually comes out bound up with other waste from what I've seen.

As long as the vent isn't swollen, red, or irritated (which it isn't) I agree with pp. You can leave it since it will probably come out on it's own

Well good news! I came home from work just now and Shesha was lying in a very strange position in his hide so I lifted it to check on him. Sure enough, he passed a urate and the mystery fiber is gone. Guess he won't have to deal with me messing with his butt tonight, which is probably something he is grateful for. :P Thanks for the reassurance last night though guys. These days I don't immediately panic when strange situations come up, but it is always mildly stressful at the very least. It is nice to have somewhere to come to compare notes and get information so I can see that the sky hasn't fallen yet. :)
