View Full Version : BRB spending most time in water bowl - advice needed

For the past week, our Brazilian rainbow boa female has been constantly soaking in the water bowl. She rarely comes out of the water, which gets me worried. She is about 1 year old, doesn't have mites, eats well. Cold and warm areas in her enclosure. Any advice, please?

How do you know she doesn't have mites?

You say there's cold n warm areas but are they within the range for brb's?

We're talking about a BRB and I haven't seen the question about humidity levels. I don't have experience with them (yet), but from my understanding the humidity should be pretty high for them. So...
What's the humidity at in their enclosure?

What was your snakes behavior before it was in the water bowl… like how are it's sheds? And yes, what are your range of temps and humidity?

Soaking with no mites generally is too hot or not humid enough

Could be getting ready to shed, my larger Dominicans and the carpet python like to soak for a week or so prior to shedding. The humidity in their enclosures is quite high enough all the time.

Trying to reply to all questions. Humidity and temp are fine. I didn't change anything in the enclosure, it's been the same for months. She shed about a week ago and she had a perfect shed. Whole skin came of in one piece. She is eating well. No mites. I looked her up.
Sorry I can't provide you with exact temp/humidity right now, but I am not home to take a reading, I'll try to do it after work.

Just because your temps and humidity have been the same for a long time and this is a new issue doesn't mean the temps and the humidity are correct.
If you want proper advice you need to give all the relevant information.
Incomplete information = inaccurate advice.

This. Humidity or temp is off or she's going into shed again (not unheard of to have two sheds close together) or she has mites that you can't see. But without knowing your temps and humidity levels we can't really help you to narrow it down.

You and I have been agreeing a lot lately.
Its almost unsettling. Lol

I find it amusing how "mites" is always the first theory thrown down when a snake soaks. With rainbows, it's the least likely cause.
These animals *love* water. I have rainbows that will spend days in their water bowl...even when all else is fine.
They do so after eating, when in shed, when too warm, when they want humidity...or just for the hell of it.
Double check temps and humidity, just to be safe, but otherwise this is no cause for concern. :-)

Every time after feeding my female goes for a soak.. Plus the odd day or two when she feels like it... :)

Lol. Apart from a few personal opinion issues we agree on a lot of things usually, but where it comes to opinions we do vary by quite a bit. Heck even Aaron and I are getting along peacefully. I think it's because largely we all want what's best for the animals.

Nobody forces you to read my threads, nor to reply to them. There are hundreds of other threads each day that you can cool your frustration on. In alternative, there are prescription pills available if you feel that you can't control it.

No. No one forces me. I punish myself willingly. Saying that. Every time you post something I always at least give you the information you ask for. In this case you asked a question without any actual information so how am I or anyone supposed to answer it? That's why it's frustrating and you do it frequently.
Maybe YOU need to take a pill.

Thank you for your honest (and exaggerated) opinion. BUT since I end up answering posts/threads that no one seems to want to answer, and for the sheer fact that at least one person agrees with me in this case, I believe as "rude and obnoxious" as I am its still more useful than running around pouting.
I am a member as anyone else and my posts can be reported. Please help yourself.

Thank you all for your advice and patience. My BR has now settled after we moved house. Temperature is about 82. Humidity fluctuates, mostly staying just above 70 degrees. She has stopped bathing constantly and is doing well.

I assure you, I was making quite the understatement, certainly not exaggerating.
Personally, I'd rather not see a response over seeing some egocentric, purposely crude and rude response, but, that's just me.
I wouldn't bother reporting you. That takes extra time, and, quite frankly, you aren't worth that time. I'll just skip your posts as usual.
Again, I just see no reason for you to be rude; apparently you see a valid reason, so, continue and enjoy!

So I'm not worth reporting because it's a waste of time BUT its not a waste of time to give me your interpretation of my bubbly personality?
Cool story bro. 👍

I did provide the info, a few days ago, in this thread. Problem is solved, I still don't know what prompted the extended bathing, but it stopped after we moved house. So, yes, the thread should be closed.

^^^ Agreed, no need for this to devolve into combat. We had enough of that a few years back....

I wouldn't consider the problem solved if the problem was technically never found. Just because the snake stopped doing something doesn't mean the underlying issue isn't there.
A lot like an illness. Antibiotics can cover up the symptoms but unless you run the proper course of them the illness can come back.
If need be, you should take the snake to a vet or at least separate it from the other one just to be on the safe side so nothing is transmitted between animals.
Personally, a snake can bathe and there not be an issue at all but if it worried me I'd take the above pre-cautions.

Thank you, Aaron. Now that I think of it, the temperature in the last few days of our stay at the old house might have been a little too high for our BRB's taste, as we were constantly out and the air conditioning was off. When the air cond was on in the room, and the heater was on as well at one end of the enclosure, the temperature inside the enclosure was around 83, but I guess that when we turned the air conditioning off the enclosure temp was most likely driven up. We are now monitoring the temperature, and everything is fine. Our girl is doing great; if she decides to bathe, it is only for a couple a minutes every now and then.
