She's a little cutie I picked up at the repticon I went to. She was hatched on Dec. 2, 2014. I don't have a weight on her yet but I will be getting a scale soon:)

I find Glitch likes to come out around 7:30-8:00 in the evening. I usually just look for a minute and leave. She knows I'm there but only hides if I make sudden of a movement. She really likes to periscope :) which I LOVE
So, I didn't realized how much I wanted to handle Glitch..... tomorrow will be the third day after feeding her for the first time.... how can I tell if she has settled in well? I really want to take her out tomorrow when my good friend is over. You think I need to stick to no handling? I want to interact with my scale-baby DX

She ate. She's settled.
I personally recommend new keepers to wait for 3 consecutive feedings.

I'm going to sound so unmature in a second but...
Even if my friend holds her while I clean the enclosure?(basically replace the paper towel substrate, and then let her back in there)

Yes. Lol its fine.
Yes. Lol its fine.
Thanks:)
(After that few consistent feedings) I definitely wouldn't start her off with a lot of handling when I just start it anyway. A few minutes at the most for beginning handling would be my starting amount. Probably only once or twice a week if that. And work up from there slowly.
Like getting a new born foal used to human presence all the way to lead breaking. It's a slow learning process for both trainer and horse. yah, I know, off subject. I have helped raise a few horses and I love the foal stage, so adorable and curious.
Since I fed Glitch last tuesday, she did eat both of the fuzzy rats. I haven't noticed any poops yet and I was going to feed her tomorrow again but should I wait a bit longer? I know my husbandry isn't exactly spot on yet but should that be something to be concerned about? I will be going to the store tomorrow so I think I'll pick up a scale. Or am I being over pariniod?

Ball pythons tend to hold it. I wouldnt be too concerned.

So I'm just being paranoid. Thanks:)
I'm on amazon and I am buying a zoo med thermostat and aspen bedding for Glitch. I bought a scale for her as well (she weighs 250 grams:) is there anything else you think I should get?

I personally would go with a hydrofarm thermostat instead of zoo med. If you don't already have one, an infrared temp gun.
I have an IR temp gun^.=.^ I was going zoo med because that is the brand of uth I have. (The zilla didn't work for some reason) will the hydrofarm work with zoo med uth? Just curious, what does the hydrofarm do better?
SnoopySnake
07-14-15, 06:17 PM
Yeah they work with zoo meds, I have one on a zoo med...I guess I'm just not crazy about zoo med products is all. just make sure its actually a thermostat and not rheostat if you go with zoo med, totally your call. What one are you looking at?
I was looking at the hydrothermal one that can regulate humidity and temps. Although I'm sure humidity will be better once I have the uth working rather than the ceramic heat lamp bulb. I'll check the hydrofarm one out:)
That looks nice:) I like that is digital rather than a know that turns to the optimal temp.

If the one you were looking at is a knob then its likely a rheostat. These aren't preferred because they fluctuate as the air temp does, vs a thermometer which will keep the temp steady regardless of air temp.

It was a knob showing different temp. The package said thermostat. I do know the difference between the thermostat and reostat. A reostat is like a light dimmer working to keep the same amount of power to the heat source. The thermostat will turn the heat source on and off when the temperature changes too far from the set temp.
On another note, Glitch has accepted her first fuzzy rat of her second meal while she has been with me. I will introduce the second in a few minutes while she gets that first one down a little bit.
She accepted the second fuzzy no problem:) she grew and I'm sure getting close to shed. I should make a humid hid for her soon. Damp paper towels in a container with a hole in the side for her to get in right? Or should I use a cloth like wash cloths?

I use damp sphagnum moss when I make a humid hide but I've heard paper towels will work well also. I'm glad your girl is eating well.

Thankyou, I've heard of the mossbeing used, but I'm going to use paper towels this time. They should be changed every couple days right?
I'm glad she is eating well too, the took the rats faster this time than last time. I got pics of her eating the first one but she hid to eat the second one.
Here are some feeding pics of her first fuzzy rat.
Let's do this!

Do I look fat after that?
http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q625/DarkDragonWarrior/Mobile%20Uploads/image-3_zpsueuaqrcu.png
Glitch is using the humid hide I set up for her:) I was going to change out the paper towels in it and I picked it up (because I couldn't see her) and I thought it felt a little heavy, so I looked in the opening and sure enough, there she was XD I ordered some aspen bedding and a thermostat so that will be in hopefully soon.
So, this morning, I had to change the paper towels for the humid hide so I took Glitch out and held her for a second and I noticed her cloaca is bulging a little bit. Could this be because she hasn't pooped for me yet after her two feedings and she needs to? I will get a picture when I can.

Yeah, there does tend to be some bulging near the cloaca when it's getting close to pooping time. Shouldn't be like that all the time, though. After pooping, it should look normal again. If it still looks bulgey after pooping, she could be getting chubby. Pretty hard to make a growing snake fat, though :p

Okay. I thought that would be why. I'll be watching for little (or not so little) preasents:) I hope she's not a farter lol but she didn't like me getting her out of the enclosure. She grabbed the fake plants I have in there and wouldn't let go. She is strong for a little thing. Almost forgot that snakes are almost pure muscle. Didn't ball up at all. She seems like less plop and more slither away when she is done with you. Very alert little girl.
Also, I will be getting the thermostat and aspen shavings in tomorrow so I will be using a more reliable heat source and she will have some burrowing space :)

Congratulations! Watching people start out and going through the whole process with them is one of my favorite parts of the hobby.
Enjoy your new pet!
Thankyou, lady_bug87
I am enjoying her a lot and can't wait to warm my parents up to her so they might consider a little garg:) adding up the costs on amazon as we speak lol though I think I'll wait a few more months before I ask or bring it up at all XDby (by then I will be living on the other side of the house and hopefully have a job)

My mom loves the snakes. My dad? Not so much. Buut I don't live with them so I can do what I want!
Lol must feel nice to be able to do what you want without asking. ":)

Waaaay back in the day, when I was getting started with reptiles, I was very lucky to have lenient parents. However, my mom was, and still is, absolutely terrified of snakes. And she produced a son that has obsessed over them for most of his life. :D At first, I could only keep lizards and turtles in the house. Then, I eventually got my mom to agree to a tiny little ring neck snake. It just grew from there. She never liked them, but, she was such a good mom she let me have them in spite of her phobia. I need to thank her for that, officially. Anyway, break your parents in slowly. That's the best way to go.

I understand. My parent are usually pretty lenient in most things. They were originally going to get me a garg geck but then literally last minute they said I could get a snake:) but slow and steady wins the race^.=.^

There are two ways you can look at it.
I fed her two fuzzy rats like I've been, she took it no problem (a day late because I moved her to another room, in the same enclosure though)
I got the thermostat, I've installed it and removed the heat lamp. The humidity has hovered around 51-52% and Ive goten a really good gradients going (the thermometers for the air temp are staying at the same spot but when I test with the infared reader the Temps are good on the surface) I have aspen for the next time I clean her cage out.
I still have not noticed any full poops from her. Do you think she is constipated? Should I put her in some warm water tommorrow?

As long as her temperature and humidity is good she'll poop when she's ready.

Great job! Keep up the good work and just make sure to keep the enclosure clean and water bowl clean. The two main ways to steer clear of illness in your bp.
Thank you :) I will be giving her aspen bedding in the morning. That will make the humidity better.
Glitch took a full meal while in shed on Thursday and today had an almost flawless shed. No stuck shed that I could see at all. ^.=.^
UPDATE ON STUFF
------------------------------------
Glitch has grown a lot! She is now 357 grams and growing. I just got a package of 20 weaned rats for her(for 15% body weight because they are 35-49 grams each. this will keep her going for a while. I am thinking about increasing amount of time between feeding time because this would be a pretty good increase in feeder size. I have been feeding her every Sunday evening. What do you think? I will get a picture of her when I can.

7-10 days at that size feeders sounds about right.
7-10 days, Okay:) Thanks
This next Sunday will be when she gets her first "upgrade"
I've been thinking about bringing her to the vet for her first check up, but my resent health problems have delayed that. Also, When transporting in a kritter keeper, which do you think is better, a hidy box, or a cloth cover? I was thinking a cloth cover but I thought a box would make her feel more secure.
Is it weird that the first thing I thought when I first touched the frozed rats to separate them was "Wow, this fur is really soft" (which I see as a sign of good health but still) not "eww, dead rat" or "so creapy the way its mouth is slightly open" just "Dang, thats some soft fur on this dead frozen rat"
Update pics^.=.^
She looks like a ghost snek XD

Glitch has taken every meal for me so far, has not acted agresive at all towards anyone, at me touch the top of her head without flinching(today), doesn't stress easily, and has given me any problems at all. I never thought I'd say this about a bp when I was researching them, but she has been been a dream to keep. She will be shedding any day now and today is feeding day. I am confident that she will take her dinner like she always does. I thought y'all would like a bit of an update with pictures,as well as I want to hear your opinions on how she is looking:)

Congrats! She's a beauty for sure. Glad to hear she is doing so well! =)
Thanks Mink:) I'm so glad I got lucky with herXD
On another, unrelated note, how's that pretty little Lucy doing(that was a while back and I'm not entirely sure that's what it wasXD)ANYWAY, the white baby that was kinda dwarfed for the age.

She's an ivory and she's doing excellent! Slams her meals down with gusto, perfect sheds. Last I weighed her, she had put on three times the weight she when I got her. She's still very relaxed and scocialable as well. Probably ny favorite of all my snakes (even though parents shouldn't play favorites lol)
Great to hear!
GLITCH decided she wanted to skip her meal and the rat was out too long to really save (kinda crushed it's skull a little to scent it) so I was thinking that i would wait for next meal time. I can't really blame her,her eyes are back to red so that means a fresh shed very soon.
I was thinking, do you think i should start having her swim or something to get her muscle tone up or is it a little early for that( since she is still growing) I'm still working on getting things for her to climb on in there but she still won't come out while I'm watching her(she seems to know when I'm looking over there )S I don't know exactly how much she comes out. When I don't have her out, she is the equvilant of a pet rock ^.=.^```
