These guys are doing pretty good except for the runt who still doesn't want to take food. I guess like most runts , once he does, it will be off to the races. Fingers crossed. Top two photos are of the large scrub and the lower left is of the runt and the right is the 100% het granite checkered garter. Haven't sexed either of them yet. They all are granite checkered garters. Possibility of the two visuals being super granite checkered.

Very nice Garters. Garters are so under rated as a pet snake. I keep a few myself.

Thanks SSSSnakes, they are under rated. I always had a fascination with them.:)

Garter snakes usually hover around the 2 foot length approximately. Some may attain longer lengths but not much more. These guys are pastel checkereds that tend to be somewhat shorter and slender than say your Puget garter or your Plains garter. They also have smaller clutches than average garters. Of course , as in most species , females are larger.

Awesome thanks for the insight Albert I don't know much about garters

^I agree. The first snake is stunning. I love the pattern and it's head. I like pythons, but if I was at a show and saw this snake I would take it home with me.

Great looking garters, I've never seen that morph before.

Actually the morph is pastel granite checkered .Both the parents are pastel 100% het for granite checkered. The runt has started taking food. He was coaxed into feeding by a live guppy about 3 days ago and hasn't stopped eating. Haha. They all popped as females. Have to triple check the sex when they get some size .

Very nice Garter, I would have not even think it was a Garter snake with that pattern! Question, do Garters feed on mice regularly or fish?

Some Garters will eat appropriate size mice, but all of mine love fish.

That was my thoughts exactly! What do Garter snake owners buy at pet shops as feeders? I reckon gold fish are avoided? :)

I buy fresh fish from the grocery store. I cut it into strips and hand feed or put it in a dish and they go crazy over it. Check thamnophis.com for more info, it is our sister forum.

My Checkered garter has been on mice almost his entire life. Depends on the snake, really!
Love the garter snakes :) Your's are really pretty!

Thanks J, in the wild, it is more fish and frogs , worms and slugs. As captives, the diet should be rodent based to support nutrition and limit parasitic loads. ;) However variety in the diet is important. The safe thiaminase free fish is what you want to feed them.
