Id a snake

Does anyone know what kind of a snake this is and if it's venomous? We saw it in nyc park today, next to buildings. I'm almost sure it's a pet that someone let loose but maybe not.
I walk my dog there every day and scared a little now :)

Eastern Milk Snake. Harmless and native to New York.

I had no idea we have snakes so close to buildings. It's a few feet away from a building though there's a large forest park next to it. But still, surrounded by city.

That's good that they're native. I thought it was a released pet and that it won't make it through the winter.


Ps so none of you are scared of venomous snakes? Why not? Because you know how to read them and handle them?

Which park did you find it in? Was it Pelham Bay, Van Cortland, Bronx Pk? I live in NY as well (born and raised in BX, live in Brooklyn presently). Very cool. As all have mentioned, these will eat mice and rats, and are harmless to you and your dog. I would love to happen upon one at a park sometime.

There really is nothing to be afraid of. The only way to get bit is to place a body part within a snakes strike range. They will never come after you or chase you in any way. Accidents can and sometimes do happen (say you step on a snake you didn't see), but as long as you remain aware of your surroundings and don't put your hands or feet anywhere you can't see the odds of such an incident occurring are incredibly low. And once you see the snake there is virtually no danger unless you attempt to harass, kill, or handle the snake and if you do and you get bit, well, that's on you.

The city has tons of rodents. Sewers, apartment buildings, parks..etc are filled with mice and rats.

Nope, forest park in kew gardens queens. But not even the large park itself (that's a little removed from buildings) but in a little outlet called overlook park which is surrounded by buildings and the closest one is 10 feet away.
Yeah now that I know it's harmless I don't care :) it's really pretty. Gorgeous

Yeah I thought they don't attack until I watched some show and they said black mamba will chase people and it's faster than any person. I know they're only in Africa but still :) and I think some other kinds will attack unprovoked. At least that's what I read or watched somewhere.

And not seeing it and agitating it is what I'd be scared of. They blend in very nicely. Also I walk at night a lot.
I don't think we have venomous snakes here but if we did I'd def be scared. It's a reflex for me. The fact that I can admire this one is a huge step forward. They're fascinating. But scary. I don't know enough about them and haven't been around them enough to lose the fear. You know, fearing the unknown.
