Concerns about wood in tank

We have a piece of driftwood in our red-eye enclosure that has a strong smell to it. We bought it at a pet store and it is the same type of wood that they have in their tree frog enclosure. When we brought it home and cleaned it the smell appeared and I thought that it was just because it was wet and that it would go away once it dried out, but it hasn't and it has been in there nearly 3 weeks. The frogs aren't going in tank until friday/saturday so we have a few days to replace it if necessary. Does anyone know it this should be okay as the pet store we got it from has had it in their tank for months and it hasn't caused any problem yet.

PS. I'm not sure what type of wood it is except to say that it is not ceder.

What did you clean the wood with? Also, why did you put it in the enclosure if it has such a strong smell and you don't know the cause?

I put it in the tank because after it dried out the smell was gone but I'm assuming that it is from the humidity in the tank that the smell has returned. I cleaned it with just extremely hot water

Is it a wood smell? Does it smell like the wood outside that gets wet? If that's all it smells like then I woudln't worry too much, though you may want to keep an eye out for mold, or (longterm) rotting of the wood. If it smells aromatic (such as pine or spruce), then you may want to remove it, as the oils are extra harmful to amphibians since they breathe em through their skin ;)

I'm not really sure what a normal wood should smell like as there are so many different types. I called the pet store where I bought it and they said that it is just wood that they find around the area and clean it for sale. Unfortunately they didn't know what type of wood it is.

Oh well . . . the wood is gone and we replaced it with an exo-terra jungle vine!!!
