over the winter i managed to keep a good temperature in my kings tank(glass) but since spring i have opened up the windows to get some fresh air in the house. the warm side of her cage is set at 85 degrees but the ambient temperature goes up quite a bit from a regular 75ish degrees to a easy 80 degrees. will this harm her at all? - im not ready to kick on the a/c yet (note: at night ambient temperature drops down again)

I don't think that is too drastic of a change in temps. Can you consider moving the tank to a area in the house where the temps will be more stable?

If if tops out at 80 you should be ok Josh. I live in GA and decided to leave my AC off for a day and the inside temps went to 86. I've decided to just leave the AC on going forward.

this made me think of something - in the summer when my a/c is on im sure the ambient temp in her cage will drop a bunch. if it does, should i get another uth and stat to put on the cool side of her tank and set it for 75ish or do you think its best to just leave it colder than normal and she can just "chill" in her warm hide

I leave my cool side at whatever the ambient temp is. My AC is usually set for 75 during the day.
