His name is Lorax, he's an Lavender Albino Goldenchild.
Got him from prehistoric pets. He's pretty laid back. Awesome color which is why I got him. So far he's been awesome. Unfortunately I'm in a battle with mites. Using provent a mite and a spray on him. Took him to the vet he recieved an ivermectin injection but don't know what else to do. Substrate has been changed 4 time. he's on aspen. I was advised to put him on astro turf by my vet. Anyone use this?

Stunning little retic, but you need to get him off the astro turf and onto paper towels or newspaper asap. Astro turf will be a breeding ground for the mites :(

Thanks Minkness I was amazed at his color when I saw him any tips on mites ?

News paper is better? I thought it was funny my vet said astro turf. He's on aspen right now actually, I haven't gotten the astro turf yet. I'll try news paper

Look up the 'nix treatment' in curing the mite problem. I purchased an adult female red tail boa about a year ago that was infested with mites. She was cured within a week with the nix treatment. It'll cost you around 50 bucks, but it's worth it. You can do it yourself at home very easy and effectively. And it will save you a fortune not going to the vet. Good luck.

Nice retic. I hear provent-a-mite and nix are the best mite treatments, but I think nix is a bit easier to find. I agree with putting him on paper towel.

I don't usually like albino morphs but that is a cool looking snake.

Did you try the nix treatment yet? It's 100 percent safe to spray the mixture onto the snake. Don't spray inside the water bowl.

You think that'll work?
I've had him for a bit shy of 2 months

No. They won't do anything, especially after 2 months.

Make sure to retreat afer 1 week and then again after 2 weeks to kill any isolated mites and then the hatching eggs. Also treat areas around the enclosure and nearby draperies and furniture. Those mites travel and cover a wide area around the enclosure. And they leave eggs everywhere.

You should retreat after a month as well.

If it would have been sooner Jay would have helped out but 2 months after prolly not, When i got Lord Voldemort he had fang face I had no idea how to fix it, I called them at prehistoric pets and jay himself called me back from his personal cell gave me the number to his personal cell so I could text him at anytime. Good luck with the mites though zoomed has some really good stuff when I got my burm had to treat her for mites and it kicked them couple of days.

Ugh... there's no need for the shots. The sprays work just fine and you don't have to waste money on the vet.

I tired the sprays and stuff and it didn't work, the ivermectin worked and he's doing great now, the reason I took Lorax to the vet was because the mites were in his eyes so I got worried.

On a positive note the mites are gone
neither Lorax or my tortise Speedracer have mites so I've been enjoying them both. Here's Lorax in the car with me, he has a spot where he hangs out when we go out. There's also another picture of him hanging out on the hammock with me.

Then you didn't use the sprays correctly. You have to treat, and then retreat, and you actually have to use the good stuff, most of the junk that you can buy at PetCo/PetsMart doesn't work at all. You need a NIX solution or Provent-A-Mite (PAM). Whenever I get mites (hasn't happened in a LONG time thankfully) I remove the snake, spray the enclosure with PAM until it is a fog, and let it sit for an hour while the snake takes a bath in a 1 gallon to 1 ounce water to NIX solution bath. You need to repeat the process after 2 and 4 weeks to make sure the eggs are all dead.

He is a VERY nice AGC. Love the shot with him on the handle.

06-29-15, 02:28 PM
I have provent a mite, I was just concerned with the mites that were in his eyes, mites are gone now. Maintaining the enclosure clean and he's doing very well. He loves that handle to cruise in the car

millertime89
06-29-15, 02:34 PM
When mites are full of tasty, tasty blood, they drop off and find a place to hide out and breed. That's when they come into contact with the anti-mite chemical. If you don't fog the enclosure with PAM and wait for it to settle then there's a chance that it didn't reach the nooks and crannies where mites like to lay their eggs. That's typically why most people have recurring infestations, they never got rid of the eggs the first time around. I'm VERY leery of any vet whose solution to everything is a shot. Even shots given for common issues, such as respiratory infections, can result in the animal getting sick or dying. Why risk complications when there are known and proven (and cheaper) measures for killing the little blood suckers?

havoc_vulture
06-29-15, 02:38 PM
True, but he's doing well
the pam is being used as a prevention now

In other news Lorax did strike me the other day AFTER feeding

millertime89
06-29-15, 03:08 PM
How soon after feeding? If within 48 hours he was probably still in feed mode and looking for more food. It's a common thing with retics and is partly why people say to only feed in the enclosure (I don't know if you do or not, but with retics you should always feed in the enclosure).

havoc_vulture
06-29-15, 03:22 PM
That's a good tip, at this point I've been feeding him outside of the enclosure.

millertime89
06-29-15, 03:24 PM
Definitely don't. It may be ok when small (or not, as you found out), but the last thing you want is a 15ft retic in feed mode out of it's enclosure.

havoc_vulture
06-29-15, 03:35 PM
Awesome. Thanks Miller. Just do the tap training if he's coming out then, correct?

millertime89
06-29-15, 04:57 PM
Yup. I would actually use a hook all the time, but that's more personal preference. I think I talked about it elsewhere here. I'll write some notes and make a post about it.

Anyone happen to know if he'll stay orange?
I can't seem to find a full adult orange retic

millertime89
07-07-15, 09:56 AM
AGCs usually hold more orange than others, he'll probably turn to more of a yellow/orange though. If he was a Purple AGC instead of a lav he would probably hold more orange. Every animal is different.

I have never understood the rationale for moving to a feeding container since the only time I've ever been bit (or my kids) is moving a snake after feeding. Btw I recently had a boa that just blew up with mites and I mean bad and the product that decimated them was nature zone mite guard in a plastic tub, no substrate or water only paper towel

Yeah I only moved him up until somebody here told me it wasn't necessary. It didn't make sense to me either but a lot of people suggest it.
I got rid of my mite problem and he's in his wooden enclosure . Now I take the extra precaution of provent-a-miteing everything before it goes into his enclosure. Like branches and stuff that can carry the little pest
