My hognose has been doing this since the day I got her. She usually only does this when I handle her. It's a kind of quiet small hissing nose like "pssth". She doesn't flatten her head when I handle her usually so I don't know if the hissing means she's upset or what..

When she really gets mad I've heard her flatten her head and hiss really loud (its kinda scary). That only happens when she thinks I'm taking food away from her.

She had a mild upper RI a few months ago; I went to the vet and gave her injections till she got better. Since then there hasn't been any sign of mucus and she's extremely responsive when I feed her. Normal activity, sheds and everything.

I've had a couple snakes do that when they're done with being handled but are too "polite" to give a real threat. Usually when they really want to explore something and I'm not letting them. Just a real lame hiss, like a huff, right? Probably means she's not a fan of how she's being handled. As long as it's not a hissing noise every time she breaths; that could be a sign of an RI in the making. But the occasional puff appears to be an expression of frustration.

Man you know exactly what I'm talking about! That makes a lot of sense. She does it when she's trying to go somewhere but I'm not letting her or when she tries really hard to burrow and it's not working out. Thanks :) I'm glad other snakes do it to and she's not sick.

Lol that just makes them all the more adorable to me XD

My little guy, when he gets upset, he does this hiss where he expels all his air in one blast and it seems almost like a sneeze. It's so powerful that it makes his whole body bounce lol. He's only done it a few times and settles down quickly. He did it when I first fed him, like I wasnt giving it to him fast enough so he was demanding it or something. Or, if one of my geckos gets close to his enclosure when he's cruising around. Reminds me of an old man yelling at kids to get off his lawn XD
