View Full Version : Snake Farts....

Recently I read a post where someone said their snake farted so loud it woke them up. I wrote this off as total BS and moved on my way past that post.....Then....last night....it happened...-que dramatic music-
Was snuggled up in bed, fast asleep when I heard it...a massive, wet sounding fart! At first I though it was me or my dog, so turned the light on. Dog was next to me in bed, so I looked around a bit and it happened AGAIN! Now I knew it wasn't me, and my poor dog looked scared. I didn't want to believe it was a snake....so I got up and checked everyone's enclosure. Crestues were all eating the fresh food I put out, leos were sleeping, MBK was coiled in the open of her tank, the hognose was in his favorite place not moving, nothing smelled off and everyone's enclosure was clean. So...I turn my attention to the tub on my floor that houses my jerk of a BP. I think to myself...no...way....but slowly I creep forward, carefully unlock the latches and pull off the lid, afraid of the possible carnage within. Sure enough, in a lovely not so little pile in the corner, a fresh poop. I just cleaned his stuff out the other day and had checked on him earlier that night and all was still clean. Wow....my BP just farted/pooped so loud he woke me up!!! It just close up his tub and figure I'll clean it later (1:30am when this all happened). So I crawl into bed and try to get back to sleep. 10 minutes later, I hear it AGAIN! I jump up, turn the light on, and look in his tub again, and he's just curled up in the middle starting at me, ready to hiss and show displeasure should I try picking him up (which is why I call him the jerk). Nothing was in there this time though.
I will be checking on him here in a bit again since I will be starting my cleaning rounds and know his needs a scooping.
Has anyone else experienced this before? I seriously didn't think it was possible but have now been proven wrong.

When I took care of my friends black milk snake, I definitely heard him make some really loud gassy poops. I've only heard one gassy poop from my hognose. The only other time was when I took my hognose to the vet and she squeezed poop out of her. That made a funky sound too.
However I've never noticed them farting without pooping.

I've heard many farts, only while they are currently excreting waste though.

one day I heard the sloppiest wettest sounding fart ive ever heard in my life. My girlfriend immediately looks at me and starts saying how gross it was. The only reason I could convince her it wasnt me is when we walked over to my bredlis tank and saw she was dropping an enormous gross poo

So I just did some googling and it seems pretty common for BP to fart with or without poop.

Do snakes fart? (http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?53304-Do-snakes-fart)
And a lot more.. So I don't think it's something to worry about :)

My Daisy, a rosy boa, occasionally farts. In fact the first poo she ever made for me came bounding out her cloaca with fanfare. I heard it from the other room and rushed fo see it in action (to figure out what it was). Very, very gross.

The first time I heard a snake fart, it sounded like someone trying to squeeze the last bit out of a ketchup bottle! I turned around, confused, and saw my cal king squeezing out a juicy poop. Since then I've heard many snake farts, generally accompanied by poop.
I'm curious why one would assume snake farts are impossible though? I would expect some degree of farting from pretty much anything with a closed digestive tract finishing with a tight sphincter. The air has to go somewhere :P I've even heard a tarantula make a little squeaky fart(again while pooping though)
Not really a fart per se, but I used to raised dragonfly nymphs and when alarmed they expel water through their anus to propel themselves forward quickly. I called those "jet farts" but I suppose since it was water they pushed out and not gas it's not truly a fart.

I think lots of people are so scared of snakes they cant imagine a mundane thing like an *** on a scary monster.

Well, I'm still new to snakes, and never heard any of my geckos fart, so I guess I figured reptiles just...didn't lol. I believe rats don't fart though if I'm right. I remember that from when I had them as pets and read lots of forums on care and they all warned heavily against certain treats that could cause gas and injure the rat due to the inability to pass gas. But yeah...mostly my own ignorance lol. But omg it was so loud and frequent!

Haha when i first got my snake and she made her first bowel movement i called the guy i bought her from to make sure it was normal. The sound is pretty much the most disgusting thing I've heard... And i have a 3 year old son! I couldn't imagine what would come from a Burmese or retic

Rats and women are the only things that don't fart

You don't spend much time with women, do you?
Interesting about the rats, though. I would expect the same mechanism that passed feces would also pass at least some of the gas along? I'll have to look that up! Very strange.

Fact: Rabbits, which are not rodents but lagomorphs, also can't fart, or burp, or vomit. Because of that they don't need to be restricted food before going into surgery (anesthesia often causes emesis).
I used to work for a rabbit rescue. Don't tell them I have snakes!

I've heard my snakes fart quite a bit. Although I'm fairly sure they're quite a bit louder coming from a 15 foot retic... Definitely has woken me up at night a time or two...

One of mine did it again just now. Just couldn't figure out who was the culprit this time.

Haha your snakes are so funny :) Mine defecates like a ninja. I have to go fecal hunting every few days in her tank. :(

This thread...lmao. I've never heard one of my snakes fart but hearing my green iguana poop was probably the nastiest thing ever.
