Central IL snake id please

Found this fella in the yard while working out there today.
I'm thinking gopher or rat snake. I'm in central IL if that helps.
Had the wrong lens on my camera so I had to get pretty close to this guy.

Thank you! He was a very nice snake. I pet his back and he kinda just stayed there and then got tired of me and slithered off lol.
