It's time to show my corns!
First, my boyfriend normal male called Julian, some of you may know him from my thread about his escape. He's really sweetheart, never bite, never hiss... you can handle him all day and he is okay with this, really calm boy. He's really a master of escapes, his last one was about 3 months, but he's in really good shape, just a little lost weight.
As an hatchling:

And now:

And here is my new female blizzard that I bought recently... we went to reptile expo and I was in love at a time when I saw her. Even price was fairly good, and she's soo inquisitive and cute! She's wandering in her new cage all the time, and she's also really alert always looking what people are doing. Handling is pretty good too, she calms down after a few moments. I still need to find her a suitable name.

Thank you!
Yeah, she's really a princess, and I'm soo glad that I bought her :)
prairiepanda, I was thinking maybe Opal, she has that peral-like scales on her belly and sometimes when the light reflects she's all shining.
Very pretty! All these white snakes are making me want one :)

Pogie, yeah, my first "love affair" with white snakes was with prairiepanda snow pinesnake ;)
But not all white snakes are that beauty for me, just some of them, haha!

Yeah, she's cute! And she's also a real woman, sometimes sweet as a pie, and sometimes she goes totally wild, trying to escape and jump from my hands :)
Tell her I'll send her my address and she can slither her way here! :)
Both are really nice looking snakes...But that white is just calling my name...just sayin rotfl.

Were did you get the blizzard?
Sylphie
05-30-15, 03:58 AM
jjhill001 in reptile expo in my town (Poland, Europe), she was from a man who had a small breeding group, he sold his Blizzard male, and she was no longer having partner so the breeder sold her for 58$.

Normally I prefer wild type color mutations but that blizzard really caught my eye

Oh my god... Two days ago, my boyfriend suggested that we created a small home breeding group. He'll create the vivs and racks, and I'll plan what to buy, haha!
So now I'm really busy planning all the things. I want to have 2-3 males and 6-8 females. One group will be with my Blizzard female for sure, and second one... I fell in love with Amber Stripe's (already saw all the morphs on iansvivarium, and that one is just stunning for me). The hard part is that in my country there are a lot of Amel's, Normal's, Snow's, Anery's, sometimes Ultramel's, Caramel's, Blood's, and nothing more... my Blizzard seems to be the jackpot, even if someone has something more interesting they are keeping it for their breeding projects.
And im still thinking what to get to have the most diverse hatchlings from one pair. The prices are irrevelant, we want to have something more interesting, than the most popular morphs. Any ideas? :D

Try playing around with this tool: The Corn Calculator - Corn snake genetics prediction (http://www.corncalc.com) It'll show you all the results you can get from various pairings. Very handy little tool.
My favorite corn morphs are Orchid and Honey, but since both are combinations of only recessive genes they do not produce a lot of variety in their offspring.
If you want to set yourself apart from other breeders with limited colour morphs, you can also play with pattern morphs. Striped and Tessera corns really stand out, even if their colours are quite common.
Sylphie
06-15-15, 12:38 PM
prairiepanda, yeah, I was playing with this calculator :D For now on I decided on following pairings:
Normal male & Blizzard - there will be only normals het blizzard, and I will save one of the males, so then the next pairings will be the offspring & Blizzard (normals and amels with nice hets, and charcoals and blizzards)
Normal male & Tessera - 50% tessera, 50% normals
And I'll find Amber female, so I can do the same thing like with Blizzards, and have caramels (and caramels stripe), hypos, stripes, normals, ambers (and ambers stripe), all with nice hets too.
We don't want to mass produce them, rather we want to have morphs that we like :) All of them will also have separate vivs, only hatchlings will be in rack's :)

Our corn snake viv in wall :D We still need to add more soil in a few places, and the plants needs to acclimate, but it will be something like this :) It take us about 3hr to clean and arrange.

Haha, thank you very much! :)
I love the natural looking tanks for critters. I would love to make one for Tyrion but not got around to it yet. gotta do more research for his native habitat. Love your tank! I even do the natural live planted tanks for my fish, if I can make their homes natural or as close as I can I think they are happier? Maybe it's just me but it's how I feel rotfl.
Again LOVE that tank!!!
Sylphie
06-27-15, 12:57 PM
Pogie, thank you! And yes, I prefer live reptile/fish tanks too! They are more entertaining, better looking, and of course more interesting for animals... but I can understand that when some people are having 20+ snakes, having a big, live plant viv would be rather hard and inconvenient.

OH yes, I can understand it too. Could you imagine setting up natural tanks for like 20 different critters?? ROTFL. I just meant for me and my few tanks haha.

Not the best pics, but still... That's a petstore female named Redhead, that my boyfriend bought after seeing her. I'm not the biggest fan of amels, but if he likes her, then that's okay. We don't know her age unfortunately...
And yeah, she's gravid so we don't handle her, especially that she's really hard to handle (don't strike or anything, but she always goes backward, not like normal snakes that try to go forward...). And I must say that she's really curious one too, ofc being gravid she prefer to stay in hide, but if I change the water she always check whats going on.
Personally I can't wait when she laid the eggs for two reasons. One being that it will be my first snake eggs, and two - I can finally start to handle her!

Did the pet store breed her on purpose, or was that a surprise? Any idea what morph the father is? I'm looking forward to seeing how this clutch turns out for you!
Sylphie
07-03-15, 10:11 AM
It was surprise, so I'm pretty curious too! And the father PROBABLY was a normal, but the shop don't know that for sure, and don't know if she has any hets etc.

Update, this time with no pics:
Redhead is still gaining more weight, I think that she should lay eggs in this month <3
Julian, normal male is okay, wandering all the time in his cage because of the breeding season.
And the longest one: my Blizzard female is in quarantine tank. She was hiding for some time in her cage, and I don't disturb her... and when she finally get out I noticed that she lost weight. She was feeding normally, so it really worry me that she's skinnier. On the other hand, my boyfriend is saying that he not see anything like this, so maybe I'm over-worried about her.
Yesterday I weight her (I'm really angry at myself that I didin't do this before, now I can't check if there is really weight lost or not), she's around 90cm long and 173g (35inch and 6.1 ounce), so she's still okay, but rather on the slimmer side.
I will observing her and checking the weight once in 2-3 weeks, and if there really is something wrong, then ofc we'll go to vet asap.... I'm just really worried :(
prairiepanda
07-14-15, 08:30 AM
Hmm...closest comparison I have is my hondo, who was 170g at 86cm and 210g at 91cm, though I increased her meal size quite a bit in between those weighings(I do try to weigh on an empty stomach, though). So it does sound like your blizzard may be a bit on the skinny side. How's her poop been looking? Do you think maybe she just needs to start having larger meals?
Sylphie
07-14-15, 08:35 AM
She's feed one adult mouse (25g) pnce in a week. And the poops are looking totally normal. And yeah, she's rather skinny compared to our male who is the same age.
Sylphie
07-16-15, 03:18 AM
Okay, we'll go to the vet asap. Today I noticed that she has really weird scales. It's not on entire body, just some random places. Here are some pics.
I hope that we'll be able to cure her.

UPDATE: We were at vet, he said that she has protozoa. We must buy medicine, and the vet will be applying it once in a day for a week. It's not the most cheap, but, hey, I'll do anything to cure her! :) Keep your fingers crossed!
prairiepanda
07-17-15, 08:58 AM
Oh dear, she does look skinny! What medicine is the vet using, do you know?
Sylphie
07-17-15, 09:14 AM
Metronidazol, she'll get the first dose today, and then she'll getting one for the next 5 or 7 days. Then a week of break, and we'll go to do check examination. I really hope that it'll be okay, as she's so skinny, that I'm afraid about longer treatment.

You know, she's rather calm one, so it's hard to tell. But she ate like a champ today, now will wait for poop and go to check it :D
And yeah, we have all the needed materials to make incubator (rub, vermiculit etc.), so we're waiting :D And I'm super curious too!
Sylphie
07-26-15, 04:55 AM
Okay, we were at check up, vet said that there is no more protozoa! She still need to go through standard antyworming, but we will wait for 2-3 weeks to give her a break. And she'll have the time to gain some weight too :D
Redhead is still in shed, so we're waiting patiently.

08-18-15, 04:14 AM
Uh, huh, our normal male escaped again... But we know that we'll find him sooner or later.
Blizzard girl is gaining more weight, and is really okay, so I'm really happy.
And Redhead is probably just fat, as 2 months has passed and no eggs are laid. So we started to handle her, and she nicely calmed down. Some pics:

We too were looking to this! And yeah, she shed 3 times (once every 3 weeks). She is a daddy girl, I'm not a big fan of amel morphs, but I must say that she's nice one :D
I "wasn't" a big fan of the amels but that one sure is a very pretty color. Very pretty :)

Here are some pics from yesterday. I'm thinking about trying to give her a rat pups as they are "fatter". Do you think it's a good idea? I won't give her it all the time, but until she'll gain more weight.
And she developed a yellow stripes on her cheeks! Really cute imo.
One more news too... It seems that she's a Whiteout, not a Blizzard, as already 4 different experienced breeders from different countries said that she def looks like a Whiteout :D

Sylphie
09-20-15, 01:22 AM
There are visual differences too. I thought like you that the only way is to breed with something Diffused. But whiteouts are having... or rather not having any belly checkers, if you want I'll pm you good pics that shows it. :D
And thank you, by the looks she's my fav too, but as long as personalities I prefer my melanistic russian Orion :D
prairiepanda
09-20-15, 09:14 AM
Rat pups won't hurt, if she'll take them. If she doesn't want to eat them then you could just try giving her mice more frequently. Unless you think you might want to feed her rats when she reaches adulthood, in which case it would be worthwhile to make the switch early.
Sylphie
10-05-15, 02:43 AM
Both of our 2yo are on rat pups and seems to be filling up nicely, so I'm glad. The one deson't even need scenting or anything... and the second needs scenting even for mices, so I assume that it'll stay that way.

White one is in quarantine tub again... I guess she has really poor immunity system, as just a little too high humidity and she's all "ri like". After few days in quarantine box with really low humidity she's all right. I plan on just moving her to the tub, as tanks seems to be not too good for her health.

Well, we went to vet today as she was still having some bubbles and was laying with open mouth. He said it's just a normal cold, we need to give her medicine for a week (the vet didn't want her to be too much stressed so he gave us the syringes with medicine and we need to put it into the smallest pinkies and feed her everyday). I'm really glad it's nothing worse!

Unfortunately she regurged the pinkies today. We'll go to the vet to give her the medicine through the tube. She's really unlucky child.
Sylphie
11-15-15, 01:32 PM
Okay, today we gave her the last part of the medicine, now we'll wait and see if it worked. Unfortunately she jerked really strong while I was inserting the tube and small part of her lip is concave, I really hope that it will be back in normal place in a few days... with her luck we'll need to go to the vet with it though.
prairiepanda
11-15-15, 02:04 PM
I hope she pulls through for you! Sounds like she's very sensitive. Once she recovers, it would probably be best to keep her on newspaper or the like instead of particulate substrate.
Sylphie
11-15-15, 02:25 PM
Yeah, we decided that she'll stay in her "hospital". It's a glass tank with good ventilation, she has newspapers there, water bowl and hides from plant pots, and she shares her heat cable with our little ball python, so the hot spot is high, but not too high for her.
I just really hope that her lip will be okay :(
Sylphie
11-16-15, 08:34 AM
Why should you choose corn snake?
Even after being to the vet for the shots, and after giving her medicine through the tube she's still mellow and didn't tried to bite even once.
And now we're waiting for the answer from our vet about her lip...
Fingers crossed it's not too bad and we will be able to fix it.
