View Full Version : Can't decide between a Milksnake or Black Mexican Kingsnake

I have been reading non stop about snakes before I purchase one for a pet.

I got it narrowed down between the pretty Apricot Pueblan Milksnake and a VERY pretty Black Mexican Kingsnake. This is a hard decision!
Everything I have read says they both make good pets. So I will go with which ever one will fit in my tank only because I would take both if I could lol.

My enclosure is a exo terra large wide. I'm not even sure if one of these would be ok in it. So where better to ask than here!

I love the color of the milksnake but I read that they can be flighty for a better word.
As for the Kingsnake, wow, just wow! But I'm thinking he/she will be to large for my enclosure.

I may even go with a bigger enclosure if need be, especially for that kingsnake. Can you tell which snake I am wanting the most? :p

You can't go wrong with either choice. You could actually get the best of both worlds with a Black Milk Snake but they'll get a little larger than a MBK. I've also heard Milks tend to be a bit more secretive whereas kings are a little more active. Best wishes with whatever you decide. Keep us posted.

My milk is cautious and discreet, and sometimes gets a little nervous when handled (just a little, never has bitten or musked on me). She is a little more outgoing when feeding day is close, and I can see her stalking in the top of a fake plant. She is now active before dusk and most of the night.

My king has a totally different personality, always roaming, and really relaxed when handled. I have the feeling that he will grow bigger and faster too. He is active in the early morning and most of the afternoon.

Both are great eaters, and forgiving if you make little mistakes in husbandry, I love them the same! Hope this helps.

Im with Aaron/rattlehead. My Milk and King share the same attributes, King is active and brave while the Milk is secretive, flighty, and a musker expert. Both are great pets, but I think Kings are better especially for first time owners. Only real problem you might encounter with Kings is occasional biting (especially in juvenile years), but this is usually easy to get past.

Thanks for the replies :) I don't mind a few bites, I had a horse that bit me and I know it can't be any worse than that.
I went for the kingsnake :) I started a post on it, I guess I should have put it in this one but I was excited and forgot lol.
