My friend just posted this on fb, unfortunately she killed it but I was wondering what type of snake this is anyway. THank you!

It's a retic! Quick, call the USFWS! /yellowtext

Just kidding. I believe it's an Eastern Hognose.

That's what somebody else said but his nose isn't turned up at all and he's pretty long and slim? You're probably right anyway!

It is a Broad Banded Water Snake.

Either that or a water snake. The bands threw me off. I'm used to the more northern variety.

Google agrees with this. Go with this. Completely harmless and not deserving of death. Shame your friend.

I spent some seven hours in my kayak this morning and afternoon looking for one of these or a Diamondback Water Snake with no luck. le sigh.

Better than 9 hours on your feet in freezing rain/sleet/snow watching cars go around in circles! (Ok, I at least had SOME fun...)

I spent 4 hours in the woods in the Texas heat looking for ANY snake lol...always seems as if those who don't want to, find them and those who do, don't.

Nice call FWK! I was thinking water snake also. Those brown short stripes on the upper jaw is kind of characteristic. I was having second thoughts that it might be a water moccasin.

Kind of funny... I looked for about 45 min, also in the woods in Texas and found three!
Two blotched water snakes, one juvenile one adult
One rough green snake

Exactly. I don't know how many times I've gone herping only to get home and see the animal I was looking for dead on facebook. But at least if the snake gets posted I've got a chance to educate someone, maybe next time they wont kill first and ask questions later. I don't like seeing pictures of dead snakes, but I'd rather see them than not see them. If that makes any sense lol.

I was out once and the only thing I found was a small garter snake and a tiny skink. As we were walking back to our car a jogger came by and showed us a picture on his phone of two bull snakes mating that he had taken on the trail about three miles away from us...

Maybe I should go out with the mindset of hating snakes and that "the only good snake is a dead snake" and they will all just come out for me haha!

LOL that sucks.

Tell me about it! We were hiking around for about two hours and he had seen them on his 30 minute jog... of course we went to the spot he mentioned and they were nowhere to be seen... Figures.

Tell your friend to layoff the snake killing. Its senseless, stupid, and completely unnecessary.

I would love to tell them that but I'm afraid it is pretty hopeless. When you live in Texas with as many venomous snakes as we have most people err on the side of believing it is dangerous.

Unfortunatley, yes this is true.

One way to prevent that is to offer the service of coming and picking up the snake yourself to relocate it. If people arent smart enough to gain education about these animals, at least they can hand over the responsibility to someone who does.

Sorry for coming off brash, it just pisses me off to see this.

Definitely a Broadbanded water snake. Here in Baton Rouge, LA we have these everywhere.

And I agree, it is frustrating when people post these kinds of things. However there is only so much we can do other than try to educate them for next time.

It's fine, D Grade. I don't blame you. These friends are more in touch with my boyfriend, however, and hopefully they're more aware of the fact that 1) not everything will kill you and 2) i'm happy to help remove a snake.

Bandit: I loooove Baton Rouge! I don't live too terribly far. And I did comment and inform them that it was totally harmless and went so far as to say that it was probably better to keep these snakes around so I hope they learn!
