Hello everyone! I am new here. I recently adopted a corn snake, which I had always wanted from childhood. I spent about $500 getting everything to give her a happy home, only to find that my landlord will not let me keep her. I have to find a new home for her, but cannot just let her go for free (sorry! too much of an investment).

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear that your landlord is giving you a hard time about your new addition. Not sure what the laws about that are like there but I know here that they can deny a rental application because of a pet but cant evict you once youre living there for getting a pet. Id contact your local landlord tennant board and see what your legal rights are.

Maybe somebody could take care of it while you negotiate an arrangement with the landlord. I would find a new place if I was renting an apartment. Good luck :)

Hi angelsinger125, welcome to ssnakess! I agree with reptiledude987 to see what your legal rights are. You don't have a cobra you have a corn! I know it's difficult for some people to comprehend the difference but these are the things that USARK is fighting. We cant let ignorance ruin our right to keep reptiles. Fight with us, you are a reptile keeper too! What is your landlord going to do if you stand up for your rights? Contact USARK!!!!!

I was/am in a similar situation. Up here once you're in nothing they can do about legal pets. With the exception of allergies to dogs, cats etc. Then you have no leg to stand on. Check with your landlord tenant board. I'm waiting for my house I bought to close so Mushu is at a snake kennel.

Thank you all for your responses. Unfortunately there was a "no reptile" clause in the rental agreement that I wasn't aware of before. Unfortunately, I don't have a leg to stand on in this situation.

I know those rental agreements are incredibly dull and tend to just state a lot of obvious things you already know, but it really is worthwhile to read them before signing. Landlords can be real sneaky about what they put in there.

EDIT: The pet-related eviction laws mentioned by previous posters applies only in Ontario, as tennancy laws are handled provincially in Canada. Here in BC, landlords can evict for new pets if there is a no pets clause in the lease, and sometimes even in cases where you do not have written permission for the pet even without any mention of pets in the lease, depending on how your judge is feeling that day. You should look into your local tennancy laws so that you can be prepared for future places you might choose to rent.

Call the tenant board anyway a lot of things in agreements have no legal ground.
