setups for hoggies

Theres an expo coming up in the beginning of may in Toronto and I'll be making my way down there and fully expecting to be bringing a hoggie home with me. just hoping to see some of the setups you guys have for them and any husbandry tips are always welcome as well.

No expert here. But I got a small breeder kritter keeper thing, put a 5 gallon sized UTH in one corner, keep about an inch to an inch and a half of substrate (senichips preferred) and a small water dish. My little guy cruises around regularly and I can watch him burrow in the sanichips as well.

I don't have any care tips as I'm still learning alot myself, but out of my 3 snakes, I think he's my fave! He is visible, not flighty at all, lets me pat him on the head, and is a wonderful eater!

Very cool. I've read a bunch of care sheets and the only thing im not seeing is what their humidity requirments are?
Whats too humid or whats too dry?

I believe it is 40-60 but someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I know they don't require much. I just mist my guy once a week and he eats and sheds perfectly.

Western Hognose are found in dry, semi-arid climates. Low humidity, relatively high temperatures and lots of ventilation is ideal. I try keep mine below 35% relative humidity most of the time, raising it a bit when she goes into shed just by taking the lid off her water bowl. Her water bowl is a plastic tupperware tub with large hole cut out of one side. Care sheets vary wildly on the suggested temps, some suggesting a hot spot as high as 95. I keep mine around 78 on the cool side and 89 hot side. She's coming up on two years old, in a 28qt tub with several hides, some sticks to climb on and newspaper substrate. She is pretty easy going most of the time, is very curious and will stick her head out of the tub when opened to see if food is on the way. But she is very huffy when in shed, often hissing as soon as I walk into the room even when she's buried under the paper and can't see me.

Ok so keeping the water dish covered to minimize the the humidity is a good idea. do you find it uses the branches? I've been reading theyre terrestrial so didnt think they would climb much.

Oh yeah, she climbs all over them. But they are only 3-4 inches off the floor at best, the tub itself is only 5.5 inches tall.

Ok cool. I have serveral unoccupied enclosures so pbased on the size of the snake I pick up will determine which one it will be moved into but even with the smallest one I have they will have at least 1' of height.

I'd recommend going by the tails and scales booth. Was talking to them at the pet expo beginning of the month. Nice people and informative. Talked to the breeder who breeds hogs for the store.

I planned on talking to them and port credit pets as well. I know theyre pretty much the only tables with hoggies at the toronto expos. We dont get near the diversity of the expos in the states. Ours are 90% BP's leos and cresties.

In this thread I was just hoping to see some setups so I could get some design ideas for the terrarium. Just giving 2 hides and a water dish looks boring and I like to have asthetic vivs as I dont do tubs. I like to display and look at my scaley friends.

I saw a fair amount of boas at the pet expo but other than that you're right. Balls probably 75% boas second, then corns and kings. Tails and scales only had 1 hog. I talked to the breeder if memory serves mid to late may is the hatch time for the next batch of hogs.

I'm trying to decide on a snake to occupy my 24x24x12 pvc but lots of the ones mentioned I can't find here. Only the most common kings not the ones I'm looking for.

I try and do the same design and tank setup wise. It's hard finding examples for ideas, most images in a google search are different animals etc mislabeled. Making it harder to replicate the natural habitat of the snake. I'm going to the expo that weekend as well to see if anything grabs my attention. Won't be ready to buy until June which is right before the next expo.

I have 6 empty vivs of different types and sizes. So I'm open to many different options. I just know that I have all the bp's and carpets I want (aside from diamonds which arent in the budget now). So a hoggie is on the top of my list now but am open to anything else unique I find.

May get a nile monitor again if I see one there too. I had to rehome the one I had before when I moved to Ottawa. But I have him tattooed hanging over my right shoulder so thats certainly a possibility as well.

I don't recall what lizards they had at the pet expo but the reptile section wasn't big and I wasn't looking for lizards so I just looked to check out and moved on.
