View Full Version : Mold/Moss on Branch?

Recently I moved my spotted python into a 24qt Sterilite tub. I have a total of six 1/4" holes drilled into the sides of the tub. 3 on each side, with mesh covering the openings. I currently am using the stick-on thermometer and hygrometer. I know that these are innacurate, and will be getting digital versions soon. Anyway, I noticed that piece of natural wood that I bought from a reptile store (and sanitized before placing in the tub) has recently began to accumulate what looks like moss or mold. Anyway, I threw the branch out as soon as I noticed. None of the artifical decorations/hides in the tub have any moss or mold on them.

Is this a severe problem? I removed some of the more moist substrate and added dryer substrate in its place to cut back on the humidity. The snake has also been eating/digesting just fine and behaving as usual.

Yes, mold is made up of spores and depending on how long a herp is exposed can be the difference. Any wood fixture in a enclosure is always at risk of becoming infested with mites as well. Be careful.

Is there any pre-emptive action I can take to ensure my snake's health? He couldn't have been exposed to the wood for more than a couple days, but if there's anything I can do to lessen the potential negative impact it may have had, that would be great.

If you caught it in a day or 2 it should be fine. Just keep an eye for any potensial respatory issues and make sure husbandry is good. But you should be fine.

Typically wood shouldnt mold if the humidity is good and theres sufficient air circulation.
