View Full Version : Delta Dash Venomous Shipping

So I started the process of becoming a known seller and they tell me this is not required to ship venomous or otherwise. I wasn't sure I trusted that and called them with the same response. Sounds like I can ship without a problem.
Question is trying to understand these IATA requirments they faxed me. Does anyone have experience with this that could help simplify? It's looking like I can only ship one venomous reptile per crate? Am I reading that correctly or can I place multiple (single) containers in one crate? Crate build looks reasonably straight forward but if someone has a photo process that would be great. For my first ship especially I don't want to show up to check it in and be turned away.
I always pick up CB when available but am heading to AZ in the July/August timeframe and dependent on what I come across I may be interested in shipping one or two home. Primary target would be a tiger as they're a bit difficult to get in my area. Possibly a nice speckled.

Sorry I can't help here. I never ship snakes and only purchase venomous that I can pick up.

I know that when I make internationla orders for my hots they all come packaged individually but in one crate. I've never shipped any out so am unsure if domestic shipping rules are any different.

CrotalusFan,
I retired from Delta (10 years ago) but I used to work in the area where all live animals were shipped and received (a lot of years ago). That said, we used to get venomous snakes in large (6"x6"x12") tin cans with a round circular top that pops in place. The snakes were bagged in small bags with overhand knots and the lid on the cans were spot soldered in place to keep curious people from opening them. There would be a number of cans in a wooden crate. If you want to, you can send me the IATA documents and see if I can "translate" them for you.

Delta faxed them to me but I'll scan them to email tomorrow. From the sounds of it the individual containers within one crate is probably going to be the answer. The crate build, vents, screen mesh, dual bag/clear container, etc...are all reasonably specific. It's hard to beat a few good photos though.
I'm really only looking for is a single tiger regardless, but it's good to understand the regulations. My luck I'd come across some new native morph of some kind only to be turned away at the counter for having the second.

Hi Jim....Thanks for your offer but unless you would like a copy for your own personal records I think I'm OK.

I had rhino vipers shipped to me Delta Dash last spring. They came in a locked orange Home Depot toolbox. The species, sex, and number of animals were included in a shipping label attached to the outside of the container. The vipers were individually packed in deli cups with padding around them inside the box.
I know many people receive large venomous import shipments or shipments from around the country with multiple snakes in them, so one snake per container is not a requirement that I'm aware of. If it is, it's not followed by most. The animals do need to be individually packaged inside the outside container, and the species names, and number of each species, needs to be recorded in a shipping label.

Unfortunately I do not have them anymore. I ordered a pair for myself and one male for a friend. My pair were thriving and doing great, but my friend's died. Then about 6 months in, I had a heater malfunction in the room, which overheated the room and killed the female. I was so heartbroken that I gave the male to a local keeper. I'd love to try to work with them again in the future, but not until my temperature control has been stable for years.

That portion surprised me a little but would be a lot easier than building a crate while I'm out there. You were pretty much spot on with everything else though. I have a guy local to me that's to be receiving a shipment here in the near future. I've asked him to hold onto the crate so I can get a visual of how they shipped.
Measurement
Snakes should be measured by total length (TL) and by body width (BW), at the widest point of the animal's body.
Care should be taken that these animals are never stretched during measurement. Measurements of width should be taken with the animal resting in a normal posture.
Specific Requirements
All rigid containers must have some kind of packing material (i.e. crumpled paper). Packing material is also recommended for bags.
Burlap (Hessian) sacks are not allowed for any snake species less than 120cm (48”).
The maximum number of animals per bag or container must not be increased even when
Larger bags are used
Plastic containers are permissible for snakes less than 60 cm (24 in) in length. These containers must be rigid and able to support the entire weight of all other containers when stacked upright and if turned upside down, without failing structurally (without bending, cracking or collapsing). The size of these containers must enable the animals to have contact with their whole ventral surface to the floor of the container.
Specific Requirements for Venomous Snakes
• In general, venomous snakes have the same requirements as other snakes, but they must be packed singly and if possible in rigid plastic containers which enable inspection and control of the animals without opening the container. If this is not possible, animals more than 30 cm (12 in) in length are to be double bagged with the specimen in a clear or transparent inner mesh bag (maximum mesh size: 2 mm [1/8 in]) to enable control, inserted in an outer cloth bag which should not be transparent.
Labelling of each bag or inner container must list the specimen's scientific name, common name and venomous/ poisonous or a pictorial warning label.
When venomous snakes are shipped in the same crate with other non-venomous species, they must be separately compartmentalized in a wood container.
All containers (inner and outer containers) with venomous species must be covered with a wire mesh over the entire opening of the container to prevent animal escape when the container is opened for inspection.
