Got some new pics of the little guy, as you can probably see, he's still got some stuck shed but I decided to leave it and let him do his own thing since its not on his tail or head/eyes. He took his second meal so well he flew off the perch for it. Now he needs a name, anyone have any ideas?

I suppose I'll use this thread for future updates/pics on this guy.

Oh yeah, I'm very happy with him, already. He seems so fearless and curious, and definitely eats good. He's definitely a lot different from anything else I've owned.

I love his big eyes :D Really cool snake!

Thanks! Those eyes really are something, huh?

Retics are so beautiful! I'm quite jealous of your handsome friend. I would love to have a SD, but unfortunately I need to keep myself flexible for living locations(far too many places have banned retics). So I love to see other people's pretty retics!

Retics are notorious for going through gradual color shifts during a normal shed cycle. Mine typically look best just after shedding and in the evenings. They can go from a muddy brown to having bright silvers and greens.
Dark (not in shed, maybe getting close but she was still a few weeks out):

Will do! He's pretty feisty so far, He just kept sliding off the coat hanger hook and I think that gives him more time to get defensive. I'm not worried about getting bitten, my problem is that I don't want to take him out because I'm worried about him flying out of my hands and getting lost.

SDs are very active and can be flighty, so even with a hook it's still something you'll have to work with. They typically calm down with age though. All of mine have calmed down when they get to be around 18 months old.

How about "Sambal"? Sambal Oelek is the go-to ground chili paste used in most Indonesian cooking. If you've ever had Indonesian food, it's the base flavor in a lot of traditional dishes. It is delicious and spicy like fire.

Gorgeous retic! He's the exact opposite of my girl, though. She's as docile as my boa constrictor, although a little touchy/twitchy if she doesn't expect being touched and quite a bit faster than my other boids, as well as more determined to get into things. Not feisty in the least.

I have yet to see mine fired up, though, is that more normal for the dwarf/SD locales? :/ She just shed but I haven't noticed much of a change, other than the normal shed cycle dulling and brightening right after shed I see in all my other snakes in the 2 weeks I've had her. She always has the same bright pumpkin orange and silver sides.

Big snake girl... All retics "fire up". It is more noticeable in the dwarves as their colors are more "dull"(hard to use that word to describe any retic). I notice the color change most in my jamps. Their sides go from a brownish to a nearly white silver. The mainlands I have(bali yellowheads) would be less noticeable if it weren't for their heads. I notice the fire up most while they're digesting a meal.

Adrian.... Is the little guy starting to calm down at all?

I couldn't figure out how to answer that but that's what I was thinking, lol. I've noticed it most after a meal and late day/early night.

He's getting a little better, he comes up to me more when I'm by the cage instead of looking defensive. Unfortunately I'm going to be gone for about 2 1/2 weeks so I'm sure that'll be a little set back. The new rubber coated hook definitely makes a difference, though.

Yesterday was feeding day.... This guys an idiot. He shot right passed the rat, then latched onto the lip of his hide. He then proceeded to 'kill' it.

He wasn't happy about being sprayed today.

Yeah these guys don't like getting startled! (Not that any snake does.) I'd be more worried about a spray inciting a nervous reaction though, as I've been struck at because I sprayed a snake before. So I normally refrain from spraying the actual snake if I do have to spray the enclosure. Have you tried offering a humid hide? Mine loved her's when she went into shed. Had a perfect one-piece shed, although I ripped it getting it out of her plant - whoops.

He's always nervous and ready for food, I actually only sprayed him because he had so much stuck shed. I was gone for a while and my dad wasn't sure how to keep the humidity up with newspaper. He has a humid hide, but I started using a different container and now he doesn't care for it. He was in it constantly before I changed it so I'll be putting it back soon. He didn't seem to mind the spray once he realized what was going on.

SnoopySnake
07-23-15, 07:05 PM
I offered food tonight after 10 days, usually as soon as I open the tub he comes out. Tonight he didn't even poke his nose out, I dangled the mouse in front of all hides and nothing. I found what hide he was in and lifted it to offer again, he striked and missed and gave a few quick defensive strikes and didn't take either rat. He doesn't look to be in shed and nothings changed. Any ideas? He's never not eaten for me...

SnoopySnake

Snakes. You gotta love them as much as you worry about them. At least their goofiness is worth some headshakes and a few laughs. Sometimes they just have a weird day for eating, as long as he ate everything's good.

SnoopySnake
07-26-15, 10:32 PM
Yeah, I am actually getting a bit worried though, yesterday I went in to spot clean his tub and he still didn't come out, very unusual for him so I'll be getting him it and looking him over pretty soon here. Hoping it's only coincidence that he's being weird after I bring a new snake in. (I am quarantining in a separate room with separate supplies)

Not really sure what to do with this guy...I don't have much time to get him out and work with him like I should, and every time I get him out he does not calm down, shoots for my face, constricts my hands...Ends up being a stressful experience for everyone involved. I really enjoy watching him but I prefer something a bit more hands on.

millertime89

Even 5 minutes per day before you go to sleep is enough. But he should start calming down, that usually starts when they get to a year in age.

Happy to say we're making a *slight* bit of progress. Yes I'm a wimp and need gloves lol. Had to take the radiant heat panel out because he somehow wedged himself in between the panel and the lid and shed up there. I didn't think he could fit....I tapped him with the hook and just grabbed him after that. There were a few bites but eventually he figured it out and then he sat curled around my hand for a good 20 mins. So now I need a new heat mat...

We're definitely making progress. The past 2 times I got this guy put he was constricting hard enough to cut off circulation to my hand, stopped biting sooner the last time, today we had no real bites (sinking teeth in) just little taps and he actually relaxed enough to wander across my arms and hands. I think things are going to get better!

Someone was having a bad day on Monday.....I find that if I don't take him out at least every other day then we lose a bit of progress.

But on the positive side, when I got him out yesterday he still got very defensive BUT didn't gape or strike while grabbing or holding him. If this keeps up, we may lose the gloves. I think he's coming along quite nicely and I can't believe I even considered selling him.

Sorry haven't had much of an update on this guy, but today for the first time in the (almost) year that I've had him, he didn't try to bite me when I got him out, he didn't sit there with his mouth gaping, he didn't try to fly out of my hands or musk me... AND he's in shed. Generally when he's in shed its like him, but on steroids lol. He looks a good girth to me, comparable to my mainland girl's current girth and she's not much bigger, retics aren't really girthy snakes. He's definitely more girthy than some of the other SD's I've seen. I wouldn't worry about his girth, he's definitely not a pencil. :)

lol Even 6'-7' shouldn't be too bad, it would be more alarming having a snake of that length showing defensive behaviors than dangerous. I've been bit by my 6.5' BCI and it really wasn't all that bad. My 3.5' ball python gave me a way worse bite than he's ever inflicted.

Yeah basically I just mean he's gotten a lot longer than thicker and generally that's how that works. He's put on a tiny bit of size since those last pics. With 'he hasn't gotten his girth' he's just still a noodle. I realize they aren't girthy snakes but he shouldn't have that body tone as an adult, he should be thicker :)

No, 6-7 ft wouldn't be too bad which is why I went for SD. I can manage that on my own, being 5'2 and 130 lbs. What I wouldn't have been able to handle is a regular mainland or dwarf on my own-and then if you add a defensive one into the mix..no thanks. I've never really had any bad bites, when I had my BCI's I was bitten by both of them but both barely got me. I've gotten bitten by my retic (not surprisingly) which left just little pin pricks, but strangely my worst bite was from my male rainbow boa. I like to boast he's the best behaved snake I have, with no bite for 2.5 years, and I really learned they all have their bad days. We were tearing his tank down to move and he was in shed, so I was holding him for it. Out of nowhere he jumped forward and bit in between my thumb and pointer finger, really took me by surprise. Haven't had an issue since.

Anyway, here's an updated pic of the jerk at hand. Took these yesterday so he still has yet to shed.

I find myself really wanting a retic due to this thread! I've been torn between a SD retic, a RTB, or a carpet python. I'm really interested in personality so it's hard to choose without getting hands on experience. I plan to go to some reptile shows this year.

What kind of gloves do you use to protect your hands from bites?

I'm not really sure what they are, I'm using some of my dads work gloves. There's two pairs and both are actually fairly thin.

No gloves this last time I took him out :) After a little bit of work this guy is definitely one of my favorites, he's very inquisitive and always on the move. Not the kind of snake to sit and chill, but still fun to hold.

When I got the one I have now I used a leather glove twice I think. Still hooked trained and that was it. She's a beauty

02-01-16, 02:38 PM
What I was doing is tapping him with the hook, then immediately grabbing him out with my gloved hands, then would take my gloves off after he settles down. Today I tapped him and then grabbed him with my bare hands, he was a lot more jumpy today from the changes in his enclosure, though.

Yeah that's normal. I've got a few snakes that are totally calm with gloves but freak when touched by my bare hand. Most likely the difference in temperature. But I try to get them used to a bare hand because I personally think it's difficult to handle snakes with gloves on.

always nice to read posts about other peoples retics :)
not sure this post is for tohers to share their pics too, but here's a few pics of when i got
this lates little boy from Bob Clark. He's a SD ultra anery.. he's prety good too, need to touch his head before reaching for him him but once out he's all over the place ready to explore..
my other one is a normal female SD she's just over 8ft long at almost 6 years old..
i've never had to use gloves at all, always have to be carefull but she's sweet as can be, never ever tried to strike.
a funny story but not so funny when it hapen :) one evening, my son was in charge of cleaning and making sure everyone was ok... welll later that night it was lights out and i was getting ready to feed a bunch of snakes, while sitting on the floor feedinmg a few babies with the other rats in the hot water/zip lock bags.. I look in front of me and there's my big female coming towards me smelling the rats :-o DOHHHHH well my heart stopped for a second as i had nooooo clue how she would react if i moved. thankfully my hook was next to me, i touched her, got up and opened the lights to get her back in her cage !!!!
ohhh i had a long talk with sonny boy the next morning :)
here's the little guy, the tub was just to get his weight, he's in a big tub until he gets a little bigger for his forever cage.. Bob thinks he will be Max 6 ish feet.

Couple days overdue. Have had this guy for a year now and here's the difference in the day he got here and now :) When he got here he was only around 18" long and now he's right around 4'! Hard to believe he's that long from this pic.

No pics, just a little update. This guy has been getting MUCH better with handling, he is still very sketchy when coming out but usually I just take the chance and reach in and grab him because tapping him with the hook seems to aggravate him and give time for him to get defensive with me. Today he was cruising (looking for food) so I opened up the tub to get him out. He was up on his branch and started getting in his defensive posture, so I proceeded to put a glove on, then pull him into my gloved hand with the hook. At this point I didn't receive a bite, so I thought it was ok to switch to my other bare hand. That was mistake 2. At this point he bit my ungloved hand, and wrapped it. Tried the trick that everyone says...running them under the tap? He just pulled and squeezed harder. So I started unwrapping from the tail, once he let go he then bit my wrist on my OTHER HAND. So, that was indeed a very interesting and not so fun experience. :D

Mistake one-knowing he was hungry/having an off day and still making him come out. Bad idea.

Mistake two-not waiting longer for him to calm down before switching hands/removing gloves (which I generally don't use anymore)

Mistake three-not figuring out some way of breaking the food response sooner.

Mistake four-not being more cautious when he released the first time.

Entirely my fault...and going back to mistake one...could have been prevented by feeding him instead of forcing him to come out ;)

lol What a goofy boy, at least he's small, a bite like that from an adult male retic could be pretty gnarly. Definitely feed him next time, I'm sure both of you would appreciate it. :P

I sold my retic today :( I've had a lot going on and been very stressed out, going to start school again soon and having a hard time keeping up. I'm going to miss the little guy :( seemed like a good fit and he seemed comfortable with the new owner, and the guy seemed very knowledgeable and experienced.

At least you know that once you get everything sorted out you can come back into the hobby. When I was a kid I asked my parents if I could have a snake and they said 'NO', I was then aged 10. I finally got my snake 53 yes 53 years later, so just be patient and it will happen. Just for the record I now have 6 lol.

My wife died of kidney cancer on 12th November 2015 and I really wondered what there was to live for and my friend said get into reptiles, so I took her advice and started with 2 Leopard geckos and 2 bearded dragons and all I have now is 5 ball pythons and a boa imperator (CA x Nicaraguan). These are going to be added to lol.
