I'm looking for a bit more insight on thermostats... More so the "Vivarium Electronics VE-100 Thermostat" does anyone use this? I know most of you guys use Herpstat, and I'm sure for good reason, but I'm looking for a cheaper alternative as it will only be controlling a heatpad for my cal-king scream.
That being said, how accurate are probes on glass tank floors?
Im off tomorrow to pick up a temperature gun to shoot the temp ontop on the heatpad as it feel pretty hot to my touch, yet the thermometer prob that sits on it only reads 74°. For now i just laid out a couple layers of newspaper and added threw some more Aspen shavings in to get her off the glass a bit more till i know the temperature for sure. As is she usually just uses her cool hide

I use hygrotherm thermostats. I get them from amazon for around $40. theyre pretty accurate within a couple degrees which can be dialed in by adjusting the temp setting.

That's considerably cheaper yet. I'll try and find one tonight.
Are they the zoo med hygrotherm? That's all i can find and they're like $80
Jump Start is the name brand I think. Model is MTPRTC that I buy.

I've been using hydrofarm thermostats for a couple of years now with no issues. They're inexpensive and they're reliable.

Just realized this is for heat mats. Would it also be okay for ceramic heat emitters?

I use all hydrofarm thermostats on ceramic heat emitters, works great. One difference is, they are either on or off, there is no built in dimmer to control the temp.

Yeah, that's fine. Thanks

Yup, I use them too. I've got a Ranco and a Herpstat for backup just in case.

i just discovered ranco today. when i get more of a 'finicky' animal when it comes to heat and humidity, i think ill go with those... CSA approved is a plus too
I use VE-300's pretty solid units and easy to program....

Honestly the hydrofarm is just as good. It's just nice having a spare.

I can vouch for this. I have two of the VE-300X2 models each controlling the ambient with a radiant heat panel and the hot spot with a UTH on two separate tanks. They're extraordinarily easy to program and very precise (since they're proportionate and not ON/OFF). They are also stackable for a nice clean look.
They're a bit pricey though, I can definitely see the deterrent there. In my defense, I use those for my two bigger setups and use the Hygrotherms mentioned above for all my smaller ones.

ok thats good to know... like i said, i have a king snake, so i dont really need to be exact with temperature. when i get another that requires more of a significant heat source than a heat pad, ill compare the other thermostats mentioned above.
Thanks EVERYONE for your input
