I plan to use a heating mat in the juvenile tank and wonder where is the best place to check the temperatur. Sure i know close to the ground (since its a ground dwelling species) but what do you suggest?

On the hot side for my snake I put the probe buried in the substrate inside his hide. He will spend most of his time in the hide and may try and bury closer to the heat. This way I know the spot he will be the most and the spot he will dig down is always a safe temperature. It's also blocked from my RHP.

Thats a good idea. :D Just try to figure out how to fix it.

one good way of fixing it is using a tubing that once the bottom part is cut out,
the sensor probe slide into it.. you just need to drill a hole to where the tube
touches the wall and secure the tube down over the heat source with either silicone if it sticks (depends on the material the cage is made of) tie wraps work well too.

the reason behind the tube is that it holds the probe into place without having the animal displacing it away of the heat source, that and you can also remove it for celaning..

if the animal can dig it out and move it, the controler would then send more heat and then the possibility of a burn or cooking the animal is present..
