Just curious. I have strange thoughts. And if you did, was it a good experience? Or did you get pooped on?

I have bathed snakes to help remove mites, stuck sheds and relieve constipation.

Nope. Straight up, honest question. I've seen some people in a kiddy pool with their snake on YouTube. I just wonder if anyone here has bathed with their snake.

Huh. I would've thought a shower might freak them out with all that water pouring down.

I talked to a friend about it on FB. We decided there was nothing inheritly bad about bathing with a snake as long as respect for the snake was given. She said if her corn snake enjoyed baths she might don a bathing suit for the event but due to a fear of being exposed to salmonella and less so of the weirdness of the act itself.

My biggest fear would be improper water temp for the snake.

For companionship! Help with stuck sheds while simultaneously enjoying the water together. Get your snake clean while you get clean too. Why handle a snake? Is there an inherent reason to handle a snake? Nope. It's just for our enjoyment and perhaps the snake may be content with it too.

I totally missed the word "with" when I made my post, originally. But I have, not intentionally, taken a bath with my snake, when I helped my 16' Albino Burm remove a stuck shed in the bath tub. He loved the shower running on him.

One of my snakes tried to give me a shower, not wanting to let go of the (running) shower head. But i have never voluntary gotten in a shower/bath with a snake, and it weirds me out to think about doing so.

They only thing that has ever happen when i put a snake in the tub is they crap, piss or try biting me. All things i don't want to be naked for and in the tub with them when it happens.
As for people swimming with them in pool you could but i wouldn't if the pool any kind of chemicals used it it. Plus never with a bigger snake.

i dont put them in the shower lol they hang on the upper ledge away from the water so they just chill and enjoy some heat

Exactaly what I was thinking. I could see sitting in a kiddie pool (chemical free) with swim trunks on. However as much as I love my snakes I dont have the level of trust to have myself exposed around them. I prefer not to take those kinds of chances with my manhood. Youve got to think thats a warm part of you and I dangle warm mice with tongs. Just dosent sound like the best idea to me.

A pool is one thing, there's a video out there from a documentary a while ago with a few shots of Nigel Marven swimming with a Burmese Python in a pool (while describing the animal, etc).
But taking a bath with snakes? Nope.

Considering that 1) the temperature that is good for them is NOT good for me and 2) it tends to make them poop, uh...

..why would I? Nope.

I enjoy the heck out of watching my garter swim, but I only do so when I HAVE to, and I would much rather not join him.

my bath would be too hot and im not too interested in sitting in lukewarm water in my bathing suit In my tub.

It is insane because I can almost guarantee those cobras have either been defanged or, less likely, devenomized. Extremely cruel practices which usually end up killing the snake due to infections. :(

water, and particularly, warm water, makes many snakes feel an urge to expell their bowel contents. Especially with a large snake, that means a slimy grotesque stinky poop in your bath. You'd have to take a shower right away and scrub your whole body with a loofah to get that kind of gross off.

Apart from it being a technically bad idea, it's really creepy. I had reptiles growing up and people used to make fun of me for it. They'd ask me if I did (gross things I dare not repeat, but use your imagination) with my snakes, bathed with them, etc. In reality I just handled them occasionally and kept them well fed... but kids are mean.

I think if you were to bathe with your snake and talk about it to your friend, or post it on facebook, you'd get talked about a lot. In a bad way.

This is one of those thoughts that you shouldn't even have put out there honestly. I would never have even started the thread. But that's just me.

A) I've bathed my snakes before and they usually don't poop. I think it depends on the individual snake. Bath does not equal automatic poop dispenser. Yes, there is a risk involved in getting pooped on but soap and water fixes that.

B) I'm sorry you were bullied. I had my hair pulled everyday in my own backyard because it was red and curly when I was growing up (until I stabbed a boy in the back with a fork -- hair pulling stopped after that). I also wore hideous glasses. Kids used to throw chestnuts at me when walking home from school just 'cause. I eventually used my viola case as a shield and weapon. I got called a lot of nasty things. I got bullied at home too by my alcoholic father and uptight grandmother who told me how I needed to get beaten with a razor strap. Life sucks like that and there are a lot of ****** people out there. The bullying wouldn't have stopped if I dyed my hair, not worn my glasses or by running away from home (I thought about it, but realized the police would find me and I would get yelled at and possibly beaten.)

I am an adult now and I don't view bathing with my snakes as creepy. I do not view my snakes in an inappropriate way nor does the snake care about me. I am a heat pad to them. Some people shower with their parrots and that is often not viewed as creepy, gross or inappropriate.

I honestly don't care what others think of me (people already know I'm weird), and I'm not going to instill a policy of self censorship. Let people talk. People will gossip about anything. If it's not your cup of tea, then don't participate in it.

My parrot comes into the shower even if I don't invite him. But I have a logical argument for that. firstly, my parrot is small, and his poops are very small. And his poops don't smell. So if he does poop in the shower, it's not going to make a mess. Secondly, I'm not sitting in a body of water with a snake swimming around in the water, I'm sharing an enclosed space with my parrot and we are both getting wet, but we are seperated. I'm not at risk of getting pooped on. Occasionally my parrot will land on the shower curtain rack and then fly down and land on my shoulder and walk to my hand in the shower, and that means he wants me to cover his head with my hand and put him on his back so he can get his tummy washed, but usually we are in there seperate. He loves the shower. He'll stay in there for a long time. I make sure to dry him very thoroughly afterwards and I usually keep a towel draped over him until he is totally dry. Parrots though, for anyone who has bonded with a parrot, are like little people. They care about the humans they bond with. They have a desire to socialize. They have a desire to learn. They desire friendship. A snake is a tube with a mouth on one end and an exit hole at the other end. It has no sympathy, empathy, love, hate, or desire to learn. It is born knowing everything it will ever know. It operates in one of several "modes"- rest, hunt, explore, flight, fight. That's about it. It has more in common with a Commodore 64 than it does with a parrot in terms of its thought processes. So that's why bathing with a snake creeps me out. Plus I'd be worrried that it might try to go up my butt :D. Nah not really. Just wanted to say that.

Here are some pictures of the adorable little b@sterd.

My apologies then :) Very nice to see such a responsible and caring breeder. Need more of 'em in general. I've been going back and forth on breeding, myself, but as I'm sure you're aware, breeders, especially with parrots and other more common pets, get a ton of flack, even if they are responsible.

The Senny is also adorable. His plumage is absolutely stunning, too. They both look exceptionally healthy :)

They better be healthy. I special order them organic food off Amazon and they get a varied diet with lots of different foods in it. They're also "free range" meaning that their cages are only locked at night. They have free range of the house. They always want to be wherever we are so we don't worry about them getting themselves into trouble. For awhile the senegal didn't want to sleep in his cage and he made a nest out of a winter hat on the coat rack. He slept in there for about a year. He's much more outgoing and inquisitive than the gray who is sort of reserved and observant. He's also very quiet for a grey. I think he was abused at his last home, he was a rescue. Poor bugger.

The senegal is totally trusting though. He falls asleep in my hands on his back all the time. And he loves trying to regurgitate food into my ear. Sometimes I don't catch him doing it and he manages to pull it off and I'm in the shower for half an hour trying to get my ear clean or vomited sweet potato and parrot stomach acid...

If it's Harrison's, I'm a little mixed on them, but each to their own. I know my blue and gold eventually rejected it despite being raised on it. Now I feed them a mixture of Roudybush, Bountiful Harvest Plus(My Safe Bird Store blend using human grade ingredients), and then fresh fruits and veggies of course.

If I only had birds, I would probably let them be free in the house if my kitchen actually had a wall to block it off. Having dogs and cats, though, I can't reasonably do that, so mine have their own bedrooms, and cages are only for sleeping but I don't lock them. I think a room is suitably sized for a full flighted macaw. :)

Our adopted Greenwing tried to make a nest of a guitar amp before I took it away from him, lol. He tries to regurgitate for me, but I ignore it and walk away when he does. I tell him I don't want to be his woman, lol. He's said to be 15 years old. We're shocked he has a clean bill of health, plucking aside.. for at least 12 years his former owner used Febreeze, air purifiers with ionizers, other air fresheners, household cleaning chemicals, and even used cleaning chemicals inside his cage... and fed him walmart brand parrot food loaded with peanuts and sunflower seeds, annnd he also only had one toy since he was a baby, supposedly. The former former owners passed that toy along with him, and then he passed it to us. :/ He's secretly my favorite, lol. I love my babies, but I love my adopted boy.

I'm very understanding with my guys, I think thats why they like me so much, particularly the senegal. His name is George. The grey is Sylvester. Sylvester was almost certainly abused or mistreated before I got him so he'll never be 100% trusting. It's a shame really.

George on the other hand is 100% trusting. I don't reject him when he tries to throw up on me. I don't walk away or anything i just make sure he can't get it in my mouth or in my ear by shifting my position a little bit and then I pet him on the head or rub his beak and that gets his attention away from regurgitating. I had him on my shoulder once playing videogames with headphones on and he regurgitated on the headphones trying to get it in my ear. It was gross, but funny.

I have fish too.

An Aulonocara?

Kuamata
02-13-15, 07:33 AM
Not saying they're bad, just that I personally don't prefer them, and neither does some of my kids. I'm also not comfortable that it's almost always recommended... I don't know, with other aninals, a widely trusted and recommended brand can go sour real quick, and when it comes to birds and their efficient systems, that can mean a lot of deaths if anything were to happen.

As I'm sure you know, certain things will work for one person, but not for another. Also, it's not that I'm not being understanding, it's that I'm telling him I'm not interested in mating. He is a mature male. If he had his way, he would be my mate.

Regurgitation is often a sign of love, yes, but in mature birds it roughly translates into,"I want to be more than a friend." Me and Quincy, is his name, are best friends, but not mates. I am the apple of his eye, no doubt, but I'm not his prize to protect from intruders. It's one thing with a small bird, but another to have a big aggressive male macaw attacking others because he perceives them as a threat to his mate. I have a fiance, and Quincy goes out in public. I don't need him claiming me, I'm already claimed. If you read on them a lot, I'm sure you've heard the countless stories about raging hormones causing a beloved parrot to relentlessly attack a significant other, and most often the other partner has no clue why their bird has 'suddenly become mean'. These kinds of misunderstandings is only one of a long list on why many end up rehomed. :( Most owners simply don't know that they're triggering hormonal responses, misleading their parrot into false promises, etc.

My babies, though, they do that with me, but I allow it because they are still young. Once puberty hits, though, it stops.

Edit: Also, gorgeous fish. I'm horrible with fish, otherwise I'd have some high dollar saltwater fish. Love to watch 'em, something therapeutic about it... but I'm horrible at maintaining water balances.

An Aulonocara?

That's an Othopharynx lithobates. It's a hap, not a peacock.

^These guys were my fav fish that I ever had. Tang gobies.

Edit: Also, gorgeous fish. I'm horrible with fish, otherwise I'd have some high dollar saltwater fish. Love to watch 'em, something therapeutic about it... but I'm horrible at maintaining water balances.

So get something that doesn't require you to balance anything. Get an Oscar, or a Flowerhorn in a nice 120Gal tank. All they need is water, oxygen, and food. It doesn't matter if your pH shifts a bit or your nitrate gets a bit high once in a while. Same goes for most of the danios if you want a smaller tank. Zebra danios could be kept in almond milk for years, I'm sure of it, and they'd be just fine.

If you want to add me to skype I'm at pabloescobar83111 and I can walk you through setup and maintenance for some easy fish. If you can do reptiles, you can do fish. It's really easy.

Why don't you start simple like a 29 or 35 gallon aquarium with a pair of Aquaclear 70 filters and a 150 watt heater and get 20 zebra danios?
They're very entertaining to watch. If you take good care of them you'll even get babies. My friend got babies and he was the worst fishkeeper I ever met.

So I dug up some pictures of our old conures, looking back, I really wish we knew how to take care of them better. We had a sun conure and the other one was either a half moon or peach front conure. I think they needed a bigger cage and better food. They were cool though, we taught the green one to dance and say hello, and whenever it got too loud for him he would start screeching and sounded exactly like an alarm clock. The orange one was more reserved, she wasn't as good about being handled.

Sorry these pics are so blurry, they're a good 7-8 years old, lol.

Awww, cute babies. I'd show mine, but I'd end up making a few posts. You can always refer to my intro thread, though. http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/new-forum/107905-guess-who-s-back.html

I am, however, adding this fiesty little bugger to my flock soon. He's a red factor sunny, and has been in two other homes that I know of. Both times rehomed due to being mean.

Also treated myself to a little gift with my taxes, lol. May not be a scaley, but was a long time dream to have one of these in this mutation. I love her to death.~

Also, Mr. Sprinkles, that Flowerhorn is gorgeous. My fiance really loves Oscars, though. I love lighter colored animals and colorful ones, she prefers darker animals... Ironically, though, she loves cockatoos but does not like the Palm Cockatoo... Red Tailed Blacks, though, are on her list of favorites. She's a sucker for our Umbrella girl, though.

Ya those birds look a bit malnourished and like they've got digestive issues. You can tell by the plumage. Next time you want birds, join a forum like parrotdise perch and ask around and get the right foods. Seeds are a terrible staple food. Much better off getting the high end pellets and using seeds as a once in a while treat. Not a whole meal. Also they need a lot of other foods to be healthy. My parrots eat about 40-50% human food and 50% parrot food. I'm not saying you're a bad person or anything you were just uninformed. And that cage does look a little bit small.

Yeah, when we had them we didn't have internet or anything, and didn't know anything was wrong. They weren't always puffed up, mostly just when they got riled up. One of them is still alive, the person we gave them to let them free roam and fed them better. I was young and didn't know better, but at least I do now!

Well, that's one beautiful hap. I'd never heard of Goby Chichlids until now.

I had a little shell dweller tank when I was a teenager, but I was always jealous of my best friend's peacocks.

But I have never bathed with them.

Here are a few more shots of Mr. George.

Here he is on my knee. He puffs his feathers out when he's with people to let us know he's comfortable.

BTW yes the staple food I use is Harrison's. I had only heard good things. I was recommended to me on a Parrot forum when I got George in 2008.

What's wrong with it? What should I use instead?

Beautiful bird and fish. If I thought I could stand the noise I would probably have a bird.

I wish I had the room to start up a proper cichlid tank again. My apartment is too small for that, though. Love my FW community tank though. Fishkeeping was my first love before I got into reptiles.
