When it comes down to it I would have rather voted for all, but being restricted to one family I chose boidae because I have a real soft spot for my little boas. I wish elapids or any venemous snake was legal in my state.

I have the same preference order, never had any real desire for venomous. Red tail boas are my favorite handling snake, most content to hang out with a chair or couch potato on the net or watching tv. Easier to breed too, live young, no eggs to incubate.
Pythons are beautiful, and some have awesome dispositions too, but not quite the same calm energy as boas. Never did care for bp's, but loving my carpet.
Colubrids are great for wide color/pattern variety, often easier to maintain and most often much less $ than other types.

The one in front of me is my favorite.lol. I can't really say I have a favorite.... But I went with pythons because that seems to be all the snakes I keep; aside from a yellow anaconda, and a C. Albolabris.

Well, fossil records for snakes are limited, but it's believed that snakes evolved from animals rather like monitor lizards and the remnant of a hip found in Boids and pythons (along with some other physical characteristics) is said to be evidence of the link.
Hussam Zaher's work is pretty excellent, I think.

This isnt a statment on religion or the belief of evolution or not. Its a matter of proof of this evolutionary step/change being provable or not as opposed to a matter of beliefs.

Agreed. Im intregued by this as I've heard the theory before but as stated previously Ive seen no solid evidence backing it up. evidence is always what I base by beliefs on hence why as previously stated its not a matter of religous reasoning but seeing proof of the theory. Of course I understand that its only a theory due to the fact that theres not rock solid proof or it would be fact as opposed to theory. However I love seeing small pieces of evidence to support these types of theories.

That statement is a fact. But it's the theory with the most evidence pointing towards plausibility to my limited knowledge.

That's really just the colloquial use of the term theory. As an example, evolution is a "theory" but it's not "just a theory". It's well thought out, debated, and backed up with evidence.
Theory - In science, an explanation or model that covers a substantial group of occurrences in nature and has been confirmed by a substantial number of experiments and observations. A theory is better verified than a hypothesis.

I agree. It's almost conservative to call evolution a theory. I think it gives focus to the questions ahead though. I remember people asking where the missing link between man and ape was when I was a kid. We have the fossilized remains of a whole chain of them now and there is similar evidence that snakes evolved from lizards. It even looks like some of the links are still alive and well.

No, it's not conservative to call it a theory. Scientists have these words with specific definitions for a reason. Wiki actually has a decent write up on this.

I like the religious stories too although I worship a flying spaghetti monster so it's more out of "liking stories". Regardless, I didn't want to start a debate. I was just interested in diving further into something that was posted

I know the rules and I do abide by them, but when you ban political and religious discussion, you are making the discussion one sided. There has always been the debate of evolutionist verses creationist and to talk about creationist, religion will come up.
I myself will not participate in this discussion, as I prefer to keep my theories and beliefs to myself and have no intention on trying to change anyone mind.

Had to come in here and rep the colubrids for a bit. The variety! You can get a colubrid and set it up in a different habitat every time. Water snake: waterside habitat, Everglades rat snake: everglades habitat, Baird's rat snake: cliff side dry habitat, Thai bamboo rat snake: temperate rainforest mountain top type thing. That's mostly just rat snakes.
All sorts of awesome snakes. And if you want the big body of a python you can go with a bullsnake or a pine snake.

Boas all the way, but pythons are a close second (specifically Carpet Pythons). I own/owned colubrids, then ball pythons for a while, and when I got my first boa--I was in love right away. Just recently I got my first (and then second Carpet Python) and fell in love with them like the boas. I still have a few colubrids (1 kingsnake and 1 hoggie), but I don't plan on buying any more in the future.

My vote was for Colubrid's because well...I'm a Colubrid guy and I love em. Possibly slightly biased because my first snake is a Cali King, but I did alot of research before getting him and Colubrid's just fit the bill for us. There are so many King morphs (Coastal Phase, Aberrant, MBK, Thayeri, AZ Mountain), Milk Morphs (Honduran, Sinaloan, Nelson), and Corn morphs that I love, I simply want em all. It was very tough deciding which one to get first, but now Im determined to simply collect all of the ones I want.
Let me make one thing clear, my vote for favorite actually might have gone Viperidae if I felt my chances of actually owning at least one would be greater than 30%. If I actually could get one, I would want nothing more than my own AZ Black Rattle Snake. Heck I wouldn't mind a Mojave, Western Diamondback, or Sidewinder for that matter. However Ill just stop now while Im ahead of myself. :)

Elapid....I believe the first time I ever saw one was Riki Tiki Tavi and I think I was hooked before the end of the cartoon. I'd love to house one myself but don't trust my experience level to make that jump yet. The closest experience I probably have is a black racer but I wasn't trying to control that with hooks!
I've worked with my share of pit-vipers but there's really no comparison there either. I guess I may take the plunge someday starting with a baby and learn what works best for me as I go. Would like to think so anyway...

My vote has to go to pythons because of their amazing temperaments, not to mention their adorable faces. They are without question the most gentle looking snake. Colubrids. Their variety, beauty - even though there are some very large colubrids, on the whole compared to others they have a thinner, smaller profile on the head shape - just personal preference. On the whole I just like the smaller, more streamlined snakes.

110% agreed!
This was tricky to answer. I went with pythons because that's where all the species that I'm most interested in keeping fall. When it comes to admiring from afar though, cobras are amazingly beautiful and quite impressive. And I'll also always have a soft spot for rattlesnakes and garter snakes since those are the ones that I've most often seen in the wild and since they seem so feared and misunderstood by so many people. So I could've easily gone viper or colubrid as well. All the snakes are my favourite! :P

Pythons generally because of how docile they can be and the unique patters they can have. Also because of how adventures they can be.

Boidae for me BCC / BCI specifically. No morphs, nature does just fine on its own.
Not even a contest. That diamond head shape, size (big but not massive), markings etc. They just really do it for me - tick all the boxes.
For photos just look at some of nightflight's photos in the Boa forum. They're as good as any you'll see in their 'normal' form.

I'm a huge fan of diversity, so I'd have to go with Colubridae for this one. It is the most speciose taxonomic family of snakes, and contains about 2,000 currently known species with a practically cosmopolitan distribution.
Pythonidae as my mine are well tempered and wonderful to handle
I say pythons. Great personalities, great feeders and so much variety. But man, those cobras a stunning!

It's all about the pythons for me, never really been a fan of boas and won't keep venomous. Not to say boas couldn't be in my future for the right pair but not right now, I'm currently in the process of getting something only 4 or 5 people literally have right now

I chose the pythons I know next to nothing about snakes except for the fact that I think snakes are super cool. I had a few weeks back inherited a two year old ball python and I want to learn to take proper care of him.
I'm a python lover as well

Hi I can't figure how to use this site but since I finally found a way to post a a question I will. As a new firs time owner of a two year old ball python I have many questions. First I discovered mold got rid of the wood and temp replaced with plastic bowl upside down with opening . I was referred to by pet store worker that the substrate I soak in water is good. I believe it is what caused the mold. What if I used newspaper for bedding and maybe soft towels I can wash regularly. Will I be able to put wood back after dried out and can I spray wood with clear lacquer. Looking forward to some advice please and thanks. Id also like to post a pic of my handsome guy somewhere

When I originally voted in this poll I chose colubrids. Now that I've had my carpets for a while I'll have to say they're my favorites. I love the way they move and their semi arboreal traits. I used to think the husbandry was more complicated, which it isn't, and there's tons of diversity.

Hands down I choose any boa (boidae). I love the way their head is shaped and their generally calm demeanor. Ive been around a lot of them in my life, and finally got one last week ^-^

So I voted on this a long time ago, but it seems I never posted!
I chose boidae, hands down, no contest. I love their stream-lined faces, and I really love the semi-arboreal species like rainbow boas and boa constrictors. I also really love their slow metabolisms, even if it causes them to grow slowly and seem to stay small forever. lol There's a lot of variety in morphs, but not enough that it gets boring and you think "another morph? seriously?" even if you think the morph is beautiful and unique it still kinda just blends in with everything else, like with ball pythons or corn snakes.
I like the patience it takes to wait for them to become mature, even if you want them to grow up fast, I just like that slower pace, seems rewarding when they finally get to size. Also, there's hardly a species in the other groups that beats a Brazilian rainbow boa or boa constrictor for color and pattern in my book. Retics are the only ones that come close (have you seen the jaguar retics???? wow).

I think I originally voted for Colubrid's, but mine has now changed to Viperidae (more specifically Crotalus species and various other Pit Vipers, but really all Vipers in general) since I started keeping venomous.

Mine by far are the pituophis clan because of their grumpy attitudes. I love the hissing and tail rattling. It makes me laugh. To me they have the most personality of any snake.

I had a hard time choosing between python and colubrid. I have 2 corn snakes ('brids) and a ball python. In the end i decided python because they have so many color morphs and patterns, but i like all kinds of snakes, even if i dont know what they are, just snakes in general are awesome.
That's hard. Unlike many the exotic nature of a snake isn't really part of their appeal and the colors aren't real high on the list. Right now my interests run toward some of the rather plain looking North American native colubrids for their simplicity, tendency to copy poisonous snakes, and being tough as nails. I like rosy and sand boas for their easy temperament and variety of locality colors before you even get into the captive morphs (although I want anerys). I like the blood python specifically out of pythons for a variety of reasons and when I get one this might be my favorite but I haven't gotten there yet. I'm testing the waters from my calm, slow, 3' max rosy boas with a bull snake shipping Monday.

I've always loved red tail boas. I've personally thought they were the most beautiful snakes out there. I just bought my first one, and I'm in absolute love with her. That was when I was younger, now that I've been involved with snakes and other reptiles, I've been redirected in multiple directions when it comes to beauty. There are so many different morphs out there that I love, especially with ball pythons, which I've had 3. To this day, my favorite resides with the red tail
Elapidae without doubt. Active hunters, interesting, intelligent. You stare into the eyes of a N. melanoleuca, and you know he's staring right back at you.
Too bad I can't keep any of them... besides not having a license, it's just not responsible when having small kids around, regardless of security measures you may take.

I chose boidae, but I'm torn between pythonidae too. I have a burmese that has the most amazing personality I've ever seen (which isn't saying a lot because I've only ever seen 1 up close and personal). She will come right up to the top of her tank and literally give you a kiss on your face if you let her. She loves to snuggle. Just has an amazing personality, even when she gets hissy, which is quite terrifying too.
But I have red tail boas that are just super chill. They will hang out on your desk and stare at you for hours. They will snuggle and watch snake videos with you on the couch. And I love their little faces.
And there's the retic. So full of energy, so inquisitive. Beautiful colours to boot.
Seeing those cobra pics up above though were pretty impressive. I'm terrified of venomous snakes, but I love to look at pics of them. So amazing and regal creatures.

It's pretty much what I expected the vote would be without looking at the replies.
Pythons have always been hugely popular and colubrids too. Boas I think just have less diversity of species being easily/commonly kept.
Colubrids are sneaky in their popularity but a ton of large scale breeders produce hundreds upon hundreds and sell them all.

I am fascinated with venomous snakes. I have owned a western diamondback and copperhead. But I've got out of that. My new favorite is my red tail boa!!

Honestly I feel like I don't have enough experience with different snake families to have a favorite. I had a sand boa and I like that most boas are pretty chill. I've had a few colubrids. I have one now that looks like a mini python :)

Colubridae! I grew up around garters, gophers, water snakes, and pine snakes and have owned corns and rat snakes also so Colubrids will always be my favorites. However my favorite snake is an Elapidae... The black mamba!
Boas! I like their size and mannerisms. I have a ball python but boas have been my favorite. Hopefully getting one soon!

Afroks, anacondas, scrubs and to some extent retics. Snakes you can never completely trust.
And yes afroks in particular can be xxxxing mean!

Pythons. I saw my first Retic when I was about 8 years old and will never forget it. 15 years later I crossed paths with a wild Retic on a jungle track in Thailand. Most impressive snake I've ever herped! I love the dragon-like appearance of full-grown King Cobras, and the beauty of Boomslangs, but I've
been bitten by enough colubrids to know I wouldn't risk handling anything venomous. Boas don't do much for me (except Rainbow Boas). Pythons are my choice; Carpets, Angolans, Timors and Retics are amongst my favourites.

Hmmmm.....I was looking for in-laws...
Boas in general no doubt about it. And Boa Constrictors are my favourite Boas. I prefer Boa Constrictor over anything else basically. Pythons are in second place after Boas.

For me it's viperidae. I find rattlesnakes in particular incredibly amazing animals. Everything from form to function. Hinged fangs, heat sensing pits, warning system I.E.: Rattle , incredible array of venom properties and so on.
I freaking love rattlesnakes! :)

I've owned many snakes. From a vicious African Rock python to a common hog-nosed snake. Boa constrictors are by far my favorite. They are easy to keep healthy, more than eager feeders, shed with no problems if the husbandry is good, or even close to good and best of all, they are the most chilled out snakes you could want. I take them out and they move slowly and deliberately. I get them out and have no worries at all. Good around my kids and even around my dog. Maybe I've been lucky, but in my opinion, you just can't go wrong with a Boa if you treat them right. I've raised mine since they were babies and that's what they are now. My babies.

Ok so when I first replied back in March I didn't have much experience outside sand boas. But now that I've had my Cape House Snake a good almost 9 months, I'm leaning towards Colubridae. I have to say he is my favorite snake. Curious, shows an active interest in me, great eater. Seems smarter than my sand boa. Don't get me wrong I like sand boas but the one I have now (love him) he's not the brightest haha. Not in a bad way. It's rather amusing actually.
I like the house snake also he looks like a python without being girthy like a python. He's active and has a lot of personality. The boa is good for any days when I just wanna chill while holding a snake. Don't have to worry so much about him taking off to explore. Just have to make sure the goober doesn't roll off my hand -_-

My favorite snake is a Ball Python. Im not sure what to call him/her because I have not determined if its a boy or a girl. Hopefully its a boy because I find myself calling it a he. His name is "Baby" He's about 2 years old abd hus colors are Browns. He is very beautuful to me I talk to him and watch him a lot. I do pick him up but not very often. As I read some post say not to. Hopefully since this is my first post I can soon post pictures and videos of him.
Pythons! I have had snakes for 20 years and 2 years ago I would have undoubtedly said boas, but after getting my first carpet python and then adding another a couple weeks ago that's all I look at now. The absolute stunning colors of carpets along with their difference in looks compared to a boa and how impressive they are while eating has completely won me over! I still want a nice sunglow boa sometime but for now I want to add more carpets.

I have a 24x18x12 what snake would u pick to put in jt
Too small for about any adult snake. Can keep a juvenile in there for its first year perhaps. Most smaller snakes need at least 36x18x18, most snakes that cross 3' would rather need a 48x24x18 and length only goes longer after that.
Favorite family for me: Psammophiidae
By far the most interesting snake species to keep in my opinion... active, diurnal, good sight, social interactions, can cohab easily, have unique behaviors, very hardy, most stay small, very beautiful.
Only not that easy to get, and not snakes to handle as they are rear fanged and venomous (are in the same superfamily as elapids), can be finicky to get eating on ft (if at all).

Im new to the python family. I took one in about a 2 months ago and its the best decision I made. I originally thought I would just take her in until I could find her a good home because I had never owned a reptile before and snakes had always creeped me out. She had been living in a very small tank in a dark closet so once I got her back to my house, I immediately got her settled into a larger tank with proper lighting and heating/humidity. I swear its like she's doubled in size since I've had her. I don't care what anyone says about snakes not having feelings but its been like an instant bond between us. She trusts me and I think she's a lot happier in her new environment. I have no fear with her which blew my mind seeing as I said I would never EVER get a snake. At the end of the day, I highly recommend a ball python to anyone who is thinking about getting a snake as a pet. They're absolutely fascinating :)

I'm terrified of snakes yet find them very fascinating. Fascinating enough to get over my fear haha.
My favorite has to be boidae because its my first and only snake. I like the look on bloods and carpets also, but I was told they're more for intermediate keepers? I love how GTPs/ETBs look.

The Short Tail Pythons have always been my favorites, the beefy nature and perfect top-out length somewhere around 5' or 6' just perfect in my eyes. The
deep blacks of a Sumatran STP or the wild type Blood Python just beautiful! Shout out to Borneo's too hahah!
