View Full Version : New addition
I found this guy on Craigslist, the owner wasn't able to care for it anymore and felt she was neglecting it, so she put it up for adoption. He had been living in a tiny cage for his size (over six feet), an 18 x 18 x 24 exo terra with no heat mat, just a heat lamp that doesn't put out much heat.
He was advertised as a jungle, but she also got him from Craigslist. So all I know is he is apparently four years old, and a jungle. (not likely pure, looks like a diamond cross to me).
He is super sweet, and I'm so excited to have him. He is still in the little cage (now with heat), but a 4 x 2 x 2 is being built for him and he should be in it within the week. :0
Meet Jenkins! Sorry, crappy iphone pics. I will have to get him out for proper ones some day.

I dunno... A 4 foot long enclosure seems a little small for a 6+ foot snake... He's beautiful.. glad you secided to try to help, but something about this makes me feel wrong. He looks so crammed in his temporary placement with one small hide and no dish to really soak in...
Hope shaunyboy or Aaron comes along and chimes in. Shaunyboy is the go-to carpet guy, and Aaron tells it like it is.
I don't see the issue? This boy has been living in this cage for a long time. I have taken him in, given him heat, and am having a large cage built for him. (And yes 4 x 2 x 2 is big enough). He is going to be in high styling heaven compared to how he has been living. I could move him into something larger right now, but chose to wait as less moves = less stress. So I am waiting for the new cage.
Oh, and the hide is large enough for his entire body to fit in comfortably, and the water dish is small as I don't want him to soak in his dish at the moment. he has mite treatment on.

4x2x2 will be just fine. Bigger is better but that size is plentiful.
This is a diamond python in a 4x2x2, and the snake is around 4 ft(not my picture). At 6ft+ a carpet python will still have a good amount of room.

I dunno, I usually go for a lil' bigger. Like, in this case, I woulda gone for a 5 or 6 foot long, 2 wide, and 3 tall. I feel like 4x2x2 is minimal for a CP that is 6+, but that may just be me. I agree, it's worlds better than what he had, but just because it's worlds better doesn't mean it's optimal or the best possible. No need to get all defensive, I'm not attacking you, just voicing that I personally feel that's the minimum acceptable sized cage for a CP that size. Shaunyboy would definitely know more than me.

Bigger being better is a given. I think the more important question is, is 4x2x2 enough? I think so, as do many other carpet keepers.

Well if other keepers keep adults successfully in that size of an enclosure without any health problems then it's fine. I just personally prefer giving the best possible.

In most of the snake world the accepted minimum requirements seems to be 1 square foot per foot of snake.
I also agree bigger is better, give as much room as you can manage to keep the proper habitat in.
But I have to agree a 6 foot carpet is going to have plenty of room in a 4x2x2.
Beautiful pick up. Carpets are such a cool species.
That's a great get. Beautiful Carpet!

My apologies for getting defensive. I try to always make sure my snakes have the best of care so I got my back up. :)
Looks like a Diamond jungle to me, a nice one too !
He will be fine in a 4x2x2, bigger is always better but that size is fine for an adult carpet.
i am a sucker for a diamond/carpet cross....that is a nice looking snake. great pick up!

Beautiful Carpet and that size cage will work just fine.
Thanks all! I am really liking him so far, I have always wanted a Diamond, and this is as close as I think I will get. I have a female Diamond Jungle baby who may meet him some day. :)

Nice new addition! He looks like he'll be appreciating the extra space in the 4x2x2.
