I've got a 100% superdwarf retic het anery female (born June 2013) that I've had since she was less than a month old. She was eating live when I got her which I was ok with because I've never had a problem getting my animals to switch to f/t (except for my old female dwarf burm, no idea what her problem was). Fast forward twelve months and she was still a stubborn live feeder. She is FINALLY taking pre-killed without issue. She's still a picky eater and it has to be fresh but she took a small rat from my fingers on Saturday with a little wiggling and a lot of patience. This is such a relief as I can finally start trying to get her onto f/t. She was eating small fuzzy rats when I got her and is on small (and soon to be medium) rats. I was definitely starting to get nervous because I really don't like feeding larger prey items live.

You do know the easiest way to switch them is to wait them out. I know it's hard to do because none of us like to see your snakes not eat. The longest i had a snake go was 3.5 month's it was my WLP but once he took his first F/T for me that was it. he ate every week after that no problem. Heck it got to the point i didn't even have to shake it. I just drop it in and he nail it.

Yes I'm aware, but I wasn't too concerned. I would rather have her eating than wait her out.
And thanks guys. I'll get some pics of the crew eventually.

Congrats Kyle, always a good feeling. I've still yet to meet the Reticulated python that wouldn't take anything, but I certainly hear about it alot. Is this female from Travis?

Nice! Happy for you :) .Never had such a picky retic, Xena doesn't like guinea pigs but that's it.

Congratulations! People will continually state that feeding live is dangerous and inhumane. Apart from that, it's also a major hassle at times.

Yeah.

I'm very careful when I do it. I'm not concerned with it being inhumane, the animals have to eat. It's the natural cycle of things. I'm fortunate that I've got a few stores close to me that sell live feeders.

It left a big ole lump! It was a large, small rat. She won't eat again for two weeks now.

Haha yeah yeah... I know. I'm terrible about getting pics up. I don't think about it when I've got the opportunity.

She was quite pleased with herself it seems. She swallowed dinner and promptly curled up in her waterb owl which she seems to like to use as a hide more than her actual hide. She's looking kinda dull so she might be getting close to shedding but she's hard to gauge sometimes.

That would be the smart thing to do.

No matter how careful you think you are...

Given the opportunity, I'm sure most SDs would eat daily. I know mine will.
Well she may be eating pk, but she still won't take f/t yet. Oh well, baby steps.

As expected I woke up to a fresh shed yesterday so I took some pictures. My GC girl shed as well but she's digesting a big meal so I'm going to leave her alone for a few days.

Yup, crummy lighting and cell phone pics don't really do her justice, but she refuses to sit still in the light tent.

Thanks! I'm really happy with her. She's quickly becoming one of my favorite snakes that I've ever owned. She's probably #3 or 4 out of 30 ish.

SHE'S ON FROZEN THAWED AT LAST! I waited her out these last nearly three months and she took f/t last night like it was no big deal! Silly snakes... Now I can start getting some size on her! Her clutchmate that my brother has is noticeably bigger because her stubborn butt wouldn't take frozen and finding smaller live prey can be a pain around here sometimes.

Since your retic finally accepted a FT I guess it's a moot point but I've had (and currently have) some snakes that won't take FT or PK but I'm scared of injury to the snake so I stun the rodent. I hate doing it but the rodent shakes and twitches and gets good movement but has proven incapable of defensive biting when struck by the snake.
millertime89

I was doing that for a long time with her. I would kill the prey but it would still be fresh and twitching which was usually enough. Stunned prey items can become unstunned and they'll be defensive as a result which is why I avoid it. I've got another snake that I can't even get to take pre-killed, but she hits like a freight train and never misses so I'm not too worried about her.
